the indian met dept office here is good for nothing, they just tell the temp!!!...
and slight winds of 40 kmph usually come often, but yesterday's 100 kmph was way too much...
atleast 3 ppl killed, several (34, till now) others injured...
an acquaintance of mine had a narrow escape, was just inches off from falling roof iron sheets...
houseboats and shikaras have turned topsy turvy in the famous dal lake... while locals helped rescue tourists from the houseboats, and there have been no reported tourist casualties, fear and awe was evident on their faces when i met some of them today...

SRINAGAR, May 18: A strong gale hit some parts of Valley including Srinagar, paralyzing normal life and disrupting power supply and road communication, late on Friday.
There were no immediate reports of any loss of life, but unconfirmed reports said three tourists were drowned in Dal lake area while boating. Over three hundred local people and tourists were rescued from Dal and Nageen lakes and shifted to safer places. Some boats and house boat capsized and residential houses were damaged.
It all started some time after sun set when strong winds started blowing. Within minutes the power supply got disrupted as electric poles were knocked down and wires fell on ground. Poplar trees and braches of chinar trees fell on the roads, residential houses, shops and other business establishments and vehicles. The roofs of some of the houses flew in air with tin sheets scattering in different directions.
Amid strong winds, falling trees, flying tin sheets and wooden pieces, the people had no time to run for safety. Some shopkeepers could not get the time to close their shops and they abandoned their shops. The people on the roads and markets took shelter in neighbouring buildings.
A number of poplar trees fell on Residency Road. The shopkeepers at the Press Enclave lane had a narrow escape when a tree hit their shops. The road got blocked and so were other roads. Tato Ground Road, JAKLI Road, Uri, Baramulla and Bandipora roads also got blocked as the trees and electric poles fell on the road.
The roofs of the houses at a number of places including Uri, Shri Bhat, Hawal, Lal Bazar, Bemina and Sikh Colony were damaged.
Hundreds of people were moving in the Dal and Nageen lake areas as the gale hit. They included locals and tourists. A number of them were at Nehru Park, Char Chinari, and Foreshore. While some managed to run towards the safer places, rest were trapped.
Police and fire services personnel swung into action and rescued over hundred persons. They were removed from the lake areas and shifted to safer places. A number of house boats and boats capsized.
Authorities said they have no immediate report of any loss of life but added that because of the darkness nothing can be said with authenticity. Unconfirmed reports said three tourists were drowned, but there was no official confirmation. A number of local were missing and had not returned to their homes.
The authorities believe that they might be trapped and may return once the road communication is restored.
Divisional commissioner Bashrat Ahmad Dar said that concerned authorities have been asked to clear the roads during night. But he added that heavy rains are making the task difficult.
Srinagar and other places were plunged into darkness as electric poles were knocked down. Even the 132 KV transmission line was damaged. Authorities said the power supply can be restored tomorrow only after the knocked down poles are erected.
