| @mib Yes you are right, s60 it is more mature of the 2, but don't fool yourself, UIQ is the more powerfull one. The 2 can't really be compared. |

I dont really agree with you here. If you look at both UIQ3 and S60 as current implemented smartphone platform (and not the designer's future wishlist of what the platform can do) then I believe s60 has the upperhand incl:-
- UI works in landscape & potrait view. UIQ3 may support this but havent seen it implemented yet
- Support for different screen resolution
- Integrated browser with opening of flash and office doc directly
- Direct SVG/Flash support / realplayer
- Integration of GPS/positioning support in OS
- Independent voice dialing/command
- Call recording. (currently this is missing from UIQ3)
- Better theme capability incl. scalable font
- vga rec at 30fps
- direct data transfer
- quad-band stack & EDGE & Wifi-g
- PTT
- gaming platform (very soon)
- DRM / wma support
- Scripting API support (python)
- ActiveSync/MS Exchange support
- More battery friendly
- More powerful phone hardware like 3.5mm jack, mini-usb, camera, video rec. (not really due to OS but prowess of the manufacturer)
- Much more 3rd party programs.

Yes both have symbian 'underneath' but that's it. S60 is standing out by its relative simplicity and elegant development (and hopefully usage) whereas Uiq is more like the other way around. (definitly nice usage at the expence of more difficult implementation. |
|
I agree with you that the UIQ3 user interface presentation looks nicer with its 3D effect. Unfortunately, much more work still needs to be done on UIQ3 before it reach the level of s60 ease of use, speed and stability.
For example, UIQ3 is designed for both TS and keypad use but the current implemented UIQ3 UI quite a few operations still cannot be performed using the keypad. This will take time to sort out and a non-TS UIQ3 may be some way off.

Remember nokia & co spend huge amounts to get s60 where it is. Se did a pretty good job with the 'old' symbian and I am sure they will sort out the 'new' one too (eventually) What I ain't so sure of is the incentive se has to pour money in it after all they discovered a nice milk cow. And is not symbian powered. |
|
I think SE is quite commited to UIQ3 (otherwise they would not have bought the platform from Symbian).

hmm, this is certainly logical, though mario has a good point also. They may backshelf it for a year while they rake in the cash coming in from walkman/cybershot branding.

And you had to create a whole new account just to post that. Not very constructive I would say . . . On the other hand if that statement 'turns you on' so be it  As I always say to my wife - anything goes as long as no one gets hurt - ;) Long live SE

Well sorry I didn't have any secret plans to divulge about the next generation of mobile phones or smth of the sorts...geez. It's not like it's even an old topic, so what do you care? Isn't a forum about posting you opinion? Sorry if I offended you, but I just felt like I had to say this.
Actually this is the first time when I get such a "warm" welcome for joining a forum...and especially on a website which I like.
Edit: just noticed the "rotten breath" part....honestly, all I can say is: where the h*** is all that coming from??...

And with SE producing phones in India soon it looks like they are going after growth this year too. I hope they don't neglect the high-end.
I'd better check the weekly sales.

Interview with UK Managing Director John Bamber.
Sony Ericsson has announced an extensive range of new handsets and has been making a lot of noise about its ambitions to soon become one of the world's top three phone manufacturers. Mobile caught up with UK managing director John Harber to see what the company has planned.
Here are the key points from the interview:
- Sony Ericsson aims to Global No3 by the end of 2007.
- LG has achieved great success in emerging markets.
- There is pressure to get things right in the emerging markets.
- The low end phones recently launched play a big part there.
- The K550i and W610i are specifically made for the UK Prepay market (W610i - £150).
- The K750i has been very successful in the prepay sector.
- The N95 is not perceived as a threat as it doesn't compete with anything in the product line at the moment.
- The
store aims to be established within 3 years.
