Hi guys i just tried out a w950i from showroom and i almost fell in love with the phone but for its volume which is very low . it is extremly quiet through the ext speakers (though clear) and through the hpm-70 the sound is only 60% that of w800i or w810i (30% of N91) . the volume was set at max and eq at Loudness but still it was quiet . more over i could not find nay way to set our own equalizers but to choose from the many preset options (contrary to what is stated by Eldar at mobile-review.com . Is this again a part of European regulation ?! Sound Pressure ?! AVLS !!! . Is the walkman 2.0 player going to have such a low volume level . Any w950i users who have compared it to the sound of ist gen walkmans please throw some light ? Also how is the w850i ? |

One of the cons of this phone is that it has no WIFI!! |

W950i
Stylish and slim pda type 3G music phone from SE.
One of the best in the line of walkman phones from SE.
Crisp display, full of feature and easy to use, this are the pros of the new W905i.
Users and buyers should see that this is an music phone, made for listening music and maybe replacing (as in my case) some mp3 players....
Personally i use it in my car, connected via an cass adapter to my cars radio.
The sound is imho better or equally to that of my iPod 5G (video).
Also the look and feel of the "walkman 2.0" is way better than the interface of the iPod....i wrote the look...NOT the easy of use!
I own now 4 phones from SE: K800i;W850i;W950i and P990i.
From all 4 i like the W950i more...but the W80i comes really close in all terms.
Surely, all 4 are verry different phones and cant be compared for real one with other...
I can highly recommand the W950i, itīs a marvelouse piece of hardware!!!
BRAVO SONY (SE).
PS. imho this phone is a real SONY development, not an SE.

The volume control in W950i has a combined slider control.
U can slide the multimedia volume and the general volume.
Try both sliders, sure it will not blow ur ears away
But listening through earphones or an amplifier the volume is surely OK.
Only on the loudspeaker of the phone it may be not so loud as on other phones (ROKR, N73...)

The sound quality reproduction on the W950 is staggering. Best quality is obtained with the DS970. Sound volume seems to be an issue for some members - but remember it does depend on how you encode the music. I use DbPowerAmp and 192kbps encoding and the volume is fine for me and I travel on the London tube! Please don't discount the W950 just on the grounds of volume. Also this is a sophisticated device and you need to use it for e week before you appreciate all the features so a demo in a shop is not really representative of what this device is capable of.

Hi Jah,
Congratulations on your new toy, i have to admit i am really impressed with the HBH-DS970 and also find the volume very loud @75% on the M600
but can you confirm the equaliser is user definable or is it presets only? Also have you tried adding the Office and pdf viewers yet and is it true it will only sync Calendar, notes and tasks not e-mail?

quick response.
1. Equalizer, Loudness and Treble boost available which change the equaliser but you can't change the equaliser manually
2. Docs to Go works fine haev not tried PDF+ viewer. I assume if you want Quick Office you'll need to buy a copy etc
Email - will try it later but email is available as an option in sync setup for PC Suite when connected to the W950. PIM data does sync as expected.

Hi Jah,
Many thanks for your quick response the sync options i quoted where from the SE site and i just found it strange to say the least. So from what you have said the M600 equaliser is the same as for the W950, so what exactly is the difference between the the Music player and the Walkman player bar the icons as i for one am confused admittedly that's not too difficult just now.

the W950 is a music Smartphone and it has buttons, controls etc on the phone that work with the Wlakman s/w. The Walkman s/w also is much more visual and interesting. Also the wheel is used for selecting tracks etc. BUT the big difference is the sound quality. If you really like very good sound quality get the W950 but if you happy with MP3s encoded at 64kbps etc then stick to the M600 - its good enough for most people. Personally I love the overall design and integration of the W950 and I am very fussy about music quality...

Key Lock
If u hold the Back button (on left side) more than 3 seconds than the keyboard on the phone will be locked.
Unlock the same way!
just fyi

Had a quick go on the w950 keypad in the shop and struggled a lilttle with it. Pressing a button the way I normally press one, I was pressing 3-4 keys. I had to use the tip of my thumb exactly on the number to get one correct press. It does seem to me like theres gaps under the plastic and that a sharp object might penetrate through. Should be fine I think though im not entirely sure I want to get used to it. Personally, I feel SE should have used normal buttons, this keypad doesn't really bring anything new, just more difficulty. |

Hi Jah
Thanks for the quick reply . But general volume and multimedia volume dont add up - do they ? I appreciate the sound quality but even through the ds970 which i own its volume is lower than k790i . Sound fidelity is also better of with k790i as it has custom equalizers . I love hearing my music really loud and crystal clear - that is why i liked the n91 , but it has hard drive problems that is more than annoying . By the way i always encode at 192kbps and above (mp4 VBR ) . Also which is the best eq preset on the w950i according to you ? Have anybody who have used the w810i tried the 950i and compared the volume . may be its my firmware version . |

I have a K800 for comparison, which I know is louder than the P990 & M600. But volume is a personal preference. I can't run the W950 + DS970 above 80% volume as it would hurt my ears! Will compare the W950 and K800 and report back.

Hi Jah,
I have all my music for the M600 encoded @192kpbs using Disc2Phone i have not turned on Megabass and have left it on default equaliser settings. As i said i find the quality excellent via the HBH-DS970's and control Music or calls via it so the extra buttons and functionality are wasted on me but thanks for the feed back. I really must pop into CPW pop my M2 in and check it through my headset and see what the difference is.

Hi jah
Thanx but u dint answer my first question - does the multimedia volume and general volume add up to increase the overall volume ? Also just tell me which is louder through ds970 - k790i or w950i ? Also i have found that through hpm-70 the k790i lacks bass totally(even with the latest firmware) . have u had this observation ? its not a problem with the headset as it works fine with w810i and has very punchy bass . |
