I am considering to buy this phone for my wife. I have just purchased S500i which is the first slider phone I have ever had . I did test the phone couple of weeks and did not find any problem other than the keyboard back-lit. I changed the phone because of the keyboard LED issue but this second unit is exactly the same. Now this S500i is packed in the original box as I have other handsets to use.
But I am still worried about the reliability of the slider mechanism and therefore a little bit hesitant to buy W910 - second slider phone. What do you guys think? I also need to consider my children who want to play with the new phone. Actually I only need 2G phone as 3G service is not available where the phone will be used but I don't have better than W910 offer from the service provider. Actually no 2G SE handsets are available from them.
Also, which color do you recommend?
Thanks a lot.

i've had my W910 for a couple of months now and the slider is still in the same condition as when i first got it. but as i'm sure you know, the best built mechanism in the world is no match for young children! they are just amazing at how they can disassemble anything!
i have the black one, which i love, but color is a personal preference. i find the red a little too bright for me, but to each his own... |

My golden white is soooo beautiful!
By the way,
Is there a way to hide or move the operator logo in the background screen??? I have got some nice Xena and Gaby wallpapers I can't see well(just on her face)
Thanks
Still, I find it a delicate mobile

Yes you are 100% right. Long time ago we have some trouble to remove cassette holder of a tape recorder to access the recording/playback head but my sister's son who was around two years old then removed it easily without our consent and not knowing our intention. He was just curious about everything around him... |

BBS,
I have no problem with W910i's and S500i's slider (normal usage). The slider mechanism is better than my nokia N95 8GB.
A white/gold W910 is nice but keypad number is not as clear due to a white background. The havana bronze (brown/gold) is nicer imo
PS: Does anyone know a way or a link to change the selection keys-shortcuts? Thanks

I just checked my service provider's website - available colors are Hearty Red / Noble Black / Havana Bronze. I am not sure if they have all of these colors in stock . |

If it's for ur wife, Silky White version is a good choice, and it should be available in HK.
Even if ur service provider doesn't provide this color, u can find it in Broadway or Fortress, or Wilson.
First : K750i, now keep on using W800i & W810i | J230i as 2nd phone | Z300i for Mum | K610i for GF But won't buy anymore as no amazing phone after W900i (Except Japan SE phone) C905? |

I have to agree with islandprd that W910 slider is better than the one on N95. (btw: I bought this phone as a gift for my dad because it was on offer and very cheap).
It is a nice phone overall. I quite like it. But like every phone it has its downside. Some of the points below may be a deal breaker for you.
- speaker phone quality : worse than horrible (provided you can even hear it)
- earpiece volume is on the low side. if your hearing is not too good (or you use your phone in noisy places) think again about buying this phone
- laggy (esp with music playing in background)
- not that stable even with latest firmware (rebooted 4 times in 2 days I played with it). Much worse than my N95 and N82.
- music quality is mediocre. Using the same set of quality headphones, sound quality from my N82 leaves the W910 far behind.
- fastport on the side needs getting use to (i.e. it gets in the way) plus messy wire due to 3.5mm adapter.
Good things:-
- Main selling point - thin, light and big screen for easy viewing (reason I bought for my dad)
- Build quality is great (the batch I bought was manufactured in 08wk23) so no issue like those reported.
- fancy flash based themes (but not too practical)
- media app is great (just wish the font size was bigger and more screen space is used)

Wow mib! I'm pleasantly surprised you bought your dad the W910 .
In music terms I put the W910 up against the N95 and the latter won but not by a huge a margin. I'd like to think the N82 has the same sound chip and therefore the same sound. So, I'm wondering what you mean by the N82 leaving the W910 "far behind".
By the way, that's a nice and fair assessment of the W910.

You are welcome. In SG the havana bronze is among the most popular color as it comes free with lowest plan. W910 is one of the hottest model here among second hand dealers, buy back at $350 and retail about $405, the silky white get 10 bucks extra.
On white edition, when backlight is off the numbering is visible, but once on, it becomes harder to see. It is also slightly harder to maintain.
Anyway doesnt matter which color, the more important choose the one your wife like
Just sharing you my experience with havana bronze. The longer you use it (expose to grim an oily hands) the better the color. I have two set of it. One produced in 2007 week 47 and one recently 2008 week 20.
@mib
Free from Singtel? Dealers buy back at $350 for bronze and $360 for white. Btw, nice gift
earpiece volume is on the low side?
Are you sure? My experience is the other way. I find my N95 8GB softer and many people agree with that and so does the test. I quoted from GSM arena
Speakerphone test Voice, dB Pink noise/ Music, dB Ringing phone, dB Overal score
Nokia N95 77.3 66.6 78.0 Excellent
Nokia N95 8GB 75.7 66.2 70.5 Good
Sony Ericsson W910 77.5 70.7 82.7 Excellent
Nokia N82 70.2 61.2 65.3 Below average
Music wise, W910 win on the bass (mega bass) but loose on the treble. N95 8GB win on the treble but loose on bass even on the bass mode. SE bundled earphone is better due to the sound insulation. However I must admit, music is very personal though.

I will get the handset at very low price if I sign 18 months service contract and therefore only the service provider will be the supplier.

My service provider has not approved the offer yet because the special offer is only for new customers, not for loyal customers like me. Let me have the approval first and see which colors are available then will ask my wife to choose. |

It is either this one or 5310. As it is for my dad so the bigger screen/keypad sealed the deal. Offer is too good to refuse. Phone is FREE on a S$16 (~8 euro) a month contract plan.

I am using a 60 bucks sony in-ear headset to test and the W910 sound seems "muffled" compared to N82 which has much more clarity across the ranges even in bass. Music from N82 definitely sounds much more lively. Maybe the problem is due to megabass and the w910 hardware is having problem handling it.
By the way, that's a nice and fair assessment of the W910.
Thanks. I am not one those who is against a brand for the sake of it

Maybe when you use your W910 you press the earpiece firmly to your ear which makes the volume bearable. The sound from the earpiece just dissipate if you are not doing this. I dont have the N95-8G but W910 earpiece volume is certainly lower than my N82 and N95.
Music wise, W910 win on the bass (mega bass) but loose on the treble. N95 8GB win on the treble but loose on bass even on the bass mode.
W910 certainly wins on bass (volume wise ) but the bass is very mushy compared to the clear and solid bass from the N82/N95. And megabass just drown out the rest of the tones and makes the music seems "muffled". Even disabling megabass doesnt increase the clarity.
@ZeneticX
The speaker is OK for ring/music but the problem is with the speaker phone.
