Don't just put things on your website because they look nice, but instead only put them on if they have a purpose. Try to avoid things which have been done loads of times before. Examples of these include
Page Counters Used
JavaScript text scrolling Used
Lots of animated gifs, Not yet!
Under constructions signsNo point!
Page transitions (fade ins etc) Not yet!
