@Amby: How come you can browse with Celtel?I've been having a "bad gateway"response for ages when I want to browse.I had to call customer care and was told that I must request for new settings every week! One was duly sent to my phone of which I was told to wait for 24hrs b4 using. It's 48hrs now, still no show!
@all: (1) Given the quality of service furore in Nigeria, which GSM company do you consider the best network in the country, call setup wise, call retention wise, voice qualitywise and data wise.
(2)What influences consumer choice of networks in this country? One hears how MTN is the worst network qualitywise yet they lead in subscriber uptake! Any views? |

@ifed, if i were to choose the best network, I'll say glo. Call quality is still manageable (glo-glo) and they seem to be the most innovative.
As per what influences choice of network, it ranges between various things that differentiates a teenager from a business executive.
I guess for a teen or a university student, it will include things like the price of on-net calls, freebies you get, Number of your friends on the network, signal strength, data rates and advertisement.
for the business execs, I guess they all bought MTN in the past and cant change their numbers for anything. Network coverage would be very important for a traveler, while cheaper tariffs will be important to some that make more calls. We've somehow managed to tolerate poor services in Nigeria.
@Brym, there's not much changes I've noticed in the P1 after the update, except for a little boost in speed which could also be as a result of a freshly installed firmware.

My broda, I guess I'm just lucky. Why would you have to send for fresh settings every week? The settings I have are the same as have been for over a year.
I'm on Celtel90 a post paid package that qualifies me for unlimited monthly gprs access.
I agree with Mamba's postulation on the reasons for subscriber's choice of networks.
I have all three.
My celtel is predominantly used for data, and the occasional sms or call. Its also my first GSM line, and as such is my most known number.
My glo line has become my default voice call line mostly because its the best here in terms of call quality, but call completion is another story.
While the MTN line I use when I have to call another party on the same network.
I am still unable to determine which of the three is the best network.
@PXT: I do not think that is a scam, but I would rather take my phone and pc there and ask them to configure both for free internet access before paying a dime. But you have to realise that what they are offering is gprs based, and may not be totally free. |

Who needs the W960 again? No me for sure!
I got Walkman 3.0 blasting live and loud on my P1...em with a lot of help from ''Hacking UIQ3 tutorial'' floating on the net.
Hacking UIQ3 has opened a lot doors to mod the P1 firmware and I am going to indulge like crazy.

@Brym, pls give me a step by step guide on how to install the walkman 3 in pidgin english right away.
Hope the risk of getting the phone bricked is less than 1%? |

@mamba: Better I give you the link, it is quite simple and straight forward with a lot of pictures/images to assist you every step. But as usual with things like this, you are on your own.
In my own case, I had made up my mind on what phone to buy next in case the P1 bricked. I also considered the Geneva Convention that would be needed to settle me and my madam for diverting budgetted funds to buy ''another'' new phone so soon.
...but that child in me...

@brym: I have been called crazy over things like this, but I think those who think I'm crazy need to get to know you.
Please consider that a compliment
Of course, I'm itching to hack my P1i too as soon as I get that 14mb file downloaded. And yes, I already have a replacement for my P1i pencilled down in the event of an 'accident'

I just completed the process - download, installation, modification, and copying of the Walkman 3.0 files. All that's left now is to reboot the phone - and hope that it boots!!
@mamba: I have my eyes on Windows Mobile: Samsung i780 or the Motorola Q9h (available from Celtel for N48,000 only).
When I submit this post, I'll reboot my P1 - and receive my judgement.....

I think I'm gonna get myself a P1, W960i is still too expensive and with a cool music player like the WM3 on a P1, its the best of both worlds. |

@mamba: I don't have a deep pocket O! I just take crazy decisions when it comes to mobile devices.
Like O'Yom I had my eyes on the Samsung i780 (that is one loaded WM device going for a reasonable price). I actually dashed to Saka Tinubu to confirm the price and availability before hacking the P1.
@O'Yom: Congratulations! I knew you would dare. Let me know if you come across a good mod. So far, other mods I saw at ipmart forums are not worth the risk. |
