Why SE only put in 802.11B is a mystery. This is the exact reason why I am slowly turning my back on them Nokia, for what it is worth, is making better phones, and using new technology (in my opinion) and they have said that their phones will support Mac as well as Windows. SE could not care about supporting Macs.

That is, I imagine, down to the fact that 802.11g was maybe not so widespread when the p990i was released and also the processor in the phone wouldn't be able to cope with 802.11g speed. Or maybe I have no idea at all what I'm talking about which is probably more to the point.

As to Nokia and Mac support, I can't comment. I know that when I had Mac OS9, there was no support for Macs and since I got my first SE phone, the t68i, I've had no problems with Mac support until I got the p990i. Even this isn't a major issue because there's always bluetooth and vcard support. Also, this program, p990iCal,which I haven't tried yet, seems to resolve the issue with synching to a Mac.

Not sure about the release of the G standard but I am sure it was out well before the P990 was released. SE, in my opinion, is simply not interested in meeting company demands (ins some cases). Maybe part of this can be attributed to the mindset of the same guys that made the PSP a COMPLETELY closed system.

I have the Nokia E61, and will be getting the N95 in the next few days. The first works with my Mac, no problems and the N95 will work with a plugin developed for Mac by Nokia.

I'm awating the arrival of my new Nokia N73. I'll take a gander at the issues of each in syncing with a Mac when I compare my K790i to the N73. These guys called Feisar are developing syncing plugins for SE and Mac but if Nokia has this kind of support out of the box it will figure into my plans big time. Although I do love SE products, I'm not blinded my my fanboi-ism.

If you go to the Nokia site, you will see that they now have plugins for the N, and E series (Symbian phones). Many work right out of the box. SE is dropping the ball and losing me as a customer.

Ditto. Check out this link - Nokia is even providing its own Mac/iTunes support for music transfers! All can give us is the pathetic "Disc2Phone," which is of course Windoze-only

I think in this instance, it's more down to Apple than SE because, as I understand it, there is a code element used in the p990i that creates an incompatibility with it and iSync and it's down to Apple to make the relevant code compatibility. This seems to be why it has been so difficult to sync the p990i with the Mac [speaking as a layman on programming issues!].

There was a similar problem with the Palm OS and Mac OS9 and it's only since OS X that conduits have been written for the Mac which resulted in a wealth of programs that can be synced with the Mac.

So far, I've manged with bluetooth to transfer files/programs and have just got a card reader. I don't have so many contacts that it's being a problem at the moment but that , p990iCal program seems to be an effective workaround for the time being.

You are partially correct. Apple could do the work but considering that the iPhone will come out, why should Apple do any work for SE. SE has made it clear that they have no intention of supporting Apple? They guys that make those plug-ins that help sync SE phones is doing a service for SE customers. I wonder what would happen if this service was not available. I can tell you that in my case, I would be doing exactly what I am doing. LEAVE SE. I am getting an N95, no more SE for me. I contacted SE personally and explained to them that I work for the US govt that evaluates new technologies. The US military is switching to Macs and also wanted to start using SE phones. SE said, they do not care nor would they support Mac, and that Apple was to blame. Typical blame dispersal.

@vincebio

Sorry, my bad. Wasn't paying attention to where I was posting.

I've reposted them to the correct forum [I hope] but I don't know how to delete posts so edited as above for a Mod to delete them.

Hmmm... I've just tested those plugins and noticed quite a few issues...

Firstly, USB syncing does not work with any of them.

Secondly, some of them conflict with one another internally within iSync (there's a technical reason why, but basically they've not been made correctly).

Thirdly, the Z310, K510, W850 & W710 plugins don't sync all available Address Book fields and switch some of the data in others (again, they've not been made correctly).

And finally, only one of them comes with an installer, but its a 4.4mb download for a 12mb application which installs just a 140kb file!

So, they may be free, but you get what you pay for in this case!

In comparison, the Feisar iSync Phone Plugins are all properly tested (many by Sony Ericsson themselves), sync all Address Book fields, work properly with USB and Bluetooth syncing, and come with a simple auto-installer...

They also support more phone models:

Sony Ericsson K310i
Sony Ericsson W200i
Sony Ericsson K320i
Sony Ericsson W710i / W710c
Sony Ericsson K510i
Sony Ericsson W850i
Sony Ericsson K550i / K550im
Sony Ericsson W880i
Sony Ericsson K618i
Sony Ericsson Z610i
Sony Ericsson K810i
Sony Ericsson Z550i / Z550c
Sony Ericsson W300i / W300c
Sony Ericsson Z710i / Z710c
Sony Ericsson W610i
Sony Ericsson Z558i / Z558c
Sony Ericsson W700i / W700c
Sony Ericsson V630i
Sony Ericsson Z310i

So, if you want a fully working sync, and free technical support, use the Feisar iSync Phone Plugins.

My point is not to do as goog as feisar, just help some people to sync via BT their SE phones.
But I'm woorking on it to make them better.

It is understandable to want to help but for the most part many phones are supported already. Second, you are pointing to links that are already mentioned in this forum many times over. Third, if you want to help but in the end breaking something, the first thing you will say is that it is not your fault, and that you are just trying to help.

With this in mind, I will stick to Feisar because I know they work.

All the plugins I have are free and the phones are not supported by iSync.

Et pas la peine de s'énerver pour ça
