The shutter lets the light in, not the sensor. Having OIS means that the shutter can stay open for longer. This is fine for still scenes, not for action scenes |

after looking at many G2 shots, I kind of see what they are doing there, basically, they add Photoshop like filter on all their photos which can be replicate with photos from any other phones. Not a fan of it, its kind of like super sai filter for snes emulator, a much more subtle effects which greatly reduce noise and can make things looks like they are sharper. If it can destroy a lot of micro details. Not a good thing imo, best to have photos as close to the source material then do post editing yourself. |

It also does the same thing with people's faces, making them look like melted plastic. |

Generally, what i don't like about smartphones cameras (and displays) the most is less natural colors, this is why i like less iphone and 1020 shots and tend to favor sony shots in many of the pics... also why i like less amoled displays, even after messing with the display modes the colors are less accurate and still unbalanced when you compare to ips, even in s5. everyone can have different preferences though.

indoors: S5 looks overall better because its video looks more lit even though its colors are too strong and fake. Z2 video looks a bit too greyish.
outdoors: Z2 - because the colors look more natural and accurate and the scene is lit enough in sunlight. again, S5 colors are too strong and fake.
i have no problem with either sound. both sound fine to me.

sony should consider translating their x reality tech to their picture and video taking skills. it's sorely needed.
they already decided to go for a punchier display. why not do it with the photos and videos since it's now clear that people prefer punchy albeit unnatural colors. they should at least give an "x reality video taking mode" to please those who want more punch in their videos and photos.
or maybe they had x reality turned on when they were tweaking their camera software? ...made them believe their photos and videos were already going too punchy when viewed from their TVs and mobile displays.

The ultimate bottle neck in terms of IQ remains the sensor area which can capture light. You can have the shutter on a 1/3" sensor open for 2 minutes but that alone won't make it behave like 1" sensor in the same conditions. OIS is handy in low light environments where you are not trying to freeze motion.. it lets more light in so that you can get a bit closer to the optimal performance of the sensor.

The autofocus in 4k works much better on the Z2.
The audio recording is better on the GS5
Outdoor IQ in 4k seems better on the GS5, a bit more color happy. The Z2 almost seemed like there was smudge on the glass lens.
Things seem a bit more even in 1080p in terms of IQ
The front facing camera on the GS5 is much wider
The white balance indoors is more accurate on the gs5
He mentioned that the Z2 gave him an overheating warning after a few minutes of shooting 4k video ?

Yep, and the G2 relies too much on the OIS and thus it doesn't freeze motion well at all. I wish camera reviews would do some good tests on how camera phones handle movement in pictures (E.g. people indoors). I would never have got a G2 had I known how bad it was at this.
I've switched back to my Note 2 as it's actually better at freezing motion.

my guess was right.

z2 1st s5 2nd m8 3rd
s5 won all except the low light set.
just as expected.
i still maintain, though, that the way the photos were shot and cropped didn't seem fair. the z2s were shrunk then zoomed in in the crops so they looked less sharp. the z2 photos were still better except for the first where the details on the buildings' facades were lost.
if it's any consolation, the display brightness of the z2 in the review is at par with those of the other two, unlike what the verge showed in their comparison photos.
on the other hand, with the news of oneplus dominating the interwebs, looks like z2 already lost it. sony and htc will most likely suffer. |
