Hello everyone!
I'm planning to buy a second hand T39, and I want to know what details and indicators I should pay attention to. I haven't seen the phone, and the seller only told me that everything is ok with it. I don't want to get fooled, of course, but it's really cheap, and.... it's hard to get one, so I wanna have it
Any help is appreciated.

Go for the service tests by typing >*<<*<*. If all turns well, go check the reception when the phone is powered on by typing one or several ### then press call, you will see a prompt for "please wait". If a prompt of "unsuccessful" appears then reception is fine but when a prompt stating "network problem" appears there maybe a problem with the phone's signal.
Try to clean your simcard and/or sim connectors at the back with a rubber eraser gently (as if you were erasing a pencil print), you could do the same with the battery terminals, then reinsert your simcard & power on and do the ### again. If it still says "network problem", the transceiver of the phone is malfunctioning or anything associated with the phone's network search.
Hope this helps...Good luck ///

Insert sim and turn on the phone. If the RF-IC is bad, you will get a network failure. There is no need to do anything more to check network reception. Contact problems at battery or simcard don't affect the network.
@Ivan:
- Network failure (if signal is strong and stays solid everything is OK. Bend the phone a little bit to check if all solderings on the board are still alright)
- Microphone cable (go with >*<<*<* to service menu and choose the microphone test blow into the microphone and you should hear the noise from the speaker).
- I/O-converter IC: choose speaker test from the service menu and press each number on the keypad to check if speaker sounds. If some tones are missing or not clean: forget the phone
- Check if the antenna socket is still strong. If the antenna moves you might have network problems in the future since bad contact forces the dead of the PA (RF Power Amplifier).
These are the most common problems with T39. There are a lot more possible failures but it would take too much time to list them all. If you check any of the points inside the service menu and you're able to do a phone call you can be 99% sure that the phone is alright.
The only problem you might not find in a short while: If the VC (Voltage Controller) is damaged, the battery will last only two days instead of average 7 to 8 days. Make an arrangement that you can bring it back if the VC is broken.

@Boba: Let's say they just wanted to be part of my collection

However, these are quite funny toys but due to their condition I'd rather leave them inside the display. I almost forgot that another phone arrived yesterday: I've been able to shot a R380 WORLD in unused condition at bey.co.uk for 4.99 GBP! Unfortunately it came "boxed" with everything but the box wasn't printed at all. Only a grey box without inlay, stamped with R380 WORLD.

@rosewhite - NICE pics ! I actually have that very same - T68/i you posted . . . bought a second-hand mid last year and had all the covers replaced + the battery (all original) . . . the only thing left is the BOARD . . . I am gettin' a straight-swap offer with an old Ericsson R380 with my T68i (just like the one you've posted on this page) . . . . is it worth it I really like the TOUCH-SCREEN feature on the R380 (what else can I do with it . . . it has a map locator-right?) Can I compose my TEXT message on the touch-screen (flip-open) ?
@bleurdeur - Your thoughts on my query on the above - please . . . thanks!

@jojo:
I can only speak for the german market since there are big regional differences. Here the R380 would be a little more worth if the condition is the same. It is a quite usefull phone, especially if you have the R380e firmware flashed. The only disadvantage is the batterie's standby time (max. 3 days at normal usage).
There is another point that would lead me to accept the deal: There are a lot of T68 offered at eBay so I could get a new one anytime. The R380 is much harder to find in good condition. The few ones that are offered are usually in bad cosmetical condition.

I am still wondering what are the MAIN function of the TOUCH-SCREEN feature then? i know it can read maps . . . does it have a GPS-function?

Hi jojo
I guess its worth it come to think of it there are still lots of T68's compared to R380's here where we are. Just go & check for reception problems & go woth the usual drill although the R380 does'nt have any service tests to my knowledge.
Check for the battery lifespan too because there a real big difference if you're gonna compare it with the T68m.
Good luck
