Lock-Out Knocked Off
A Japanese PSP, a US game ... we've put the two together and put region-coding fears to rest.
by Nix

March 5, 2005 - Is it or isn't it?

Now that Friends is off the air, the biggest cliffhanger of the season has been over whether or not the PlayStation Portable is a region-free system. The PSP was first announced to have full region protection available on all of its UMD formats (Music, Video, and Game), but executives and representatives from Sony have since said in various forums (including the first mention right here on IGN) that the region system would not be turned on for videogame releases. The fear struck back, however, when the initial Japanese PSP games released with a DVD-style region markings on the package. Would Japanese and North American systems, as Sony initially led us to believe, still be able to get along and play each other's import games?

While absolutely definitive proof that PSPs games are open for games of all regions to play will have to wait until US-edition PSP systems are available, we can finally confirm that US games play just fine on Japanese PSPs. We received our first retail copy of a US game -- EA's Need For Speed Underground: Rivals, which we will have further coverage of next week -- and found that it played just fine on the PSP we picked up months ago in Akihabara, Japan. Aside from having to know that Japanese game systems use the circle button to make menu choices instead of the westernized X (which was no longer an issue once we were in the game, as it's only global menus that have this import quirk), there was no evidence when we jumped into the game that our system was bought in Japan instead of in America.

There's the ESRB logo right there -- it's a US game, and it works fine on a Japanese PSP. And you were fretting so...

It is still unknown how region systems will work with any of the forthcoming UMD Video releases (although, considering these are the DVD people we're dealing with here instead of Sony, chances are the locks are locked up as expected.) Importers should be aware that, as with any other game system, you should not expect import and domestic versions of games to link multiplayer together -- the systems should connect just fine, but because the US and JPN editions have a different code base because of all the language and tweaks and other edits that go on when localizing a title, the two versions are technically two different games. (We have already tested the US and Japanese editions of Lumines, and unfortunately, they won't link together -- on the other hand, our version eliminates the slowdown and in-game loading that disrupted the Japanese game's rave, so it's a fair fix.)

We'll be putting more discs to the test on PSPs from different regions as the games and systems come in, but as it stands now, the locks are unlocked for import fans to get their game on.

Ok today i had a thought which i hope is true

Japanese PSP serial number ends with : PSP1000
US PSP Serial number ends with : PSP1001

and the US DVD region code is 1
and the REGION FREE region code is 0

so then maybe this is why Europe is late becasue of each coding! it probably would have been available if europe was all ONE code but no isnt

so im thinking then UK psp will end with PSP1002 becasue UK is region coded to 2

I wouldn't call 20-30 pound spending extra for a region free device. Think how much it cost to chip/mod your ps2 or Xbox to play copied dvd's

With the Usa games costing $40-59 well thats a bargain. Because companies like to exploit region coding the make europe more expensive. Which is why havin a region free PSP is good but you can wait for an unknown release date

OK, not been here for a while as been busy with other things..........
including.................

Conducting comparison of the DS and PSP!

I had the DS to play with on Tuesday and luckily it had Ridge Racer DS with it too, what better comparison could there be
The device itself is a US import (so are the games) and felt better quality than the earlier demo models but it still is plastic and toy like in comparison with the PSP.
Didn't have time to test everythin too extensively so I may have missed or misunderstood some things.

Here it is: (note its bigger than the PSP in every dimension except side to side width)

The game cartridges are very small:

Here you see the DS equivalent of the Homescreen with clock and calendar on the upper screen:

and the game select and other features on the lower touchscreen:

You will see:
Pictochat - a nice little messaging app which works wirelessly between DS's but I'm not sure if it can access the internet. To me it just suggests school kids sending messages across the classroom in lessons

DS Download Play - This seems to be to allow wireless battle between DS's with only one game cartridge, I think u can d/load the game temporarily in order to play the battle.

GBA - Load a GameBoy Advance cartridge (backwards compatibility)

Screen light on/off in bottom left

Options icon bottom middle

and alarm function bottom right.

Now for the gameplay itself! The console has no analogue stick which is a big drawback for me, especially on driving games, and also like the PSP does not vibrate.
Ridge Racer DS is immediately inferior in appearance to the PSP but is still good for a handheld. The handling though was simply POOR! Very unrealistic and not smooth like RRs on PSP. The cars turn too much and do not slide in a smooth manner, they also exit the slide suddenly and with a jerk forwards usually sending you into the wall! The game took A LOT of getting used to unlike RRs on PSP which feels natural and immediately playable.

One very nice feature is the course select as it shows a 3D map on the upper screen, however the courses do not have proper names and are simply called RidgeRacer Novice and Revolution Intermediate etc.
DS:

PSP:

The car select is not bad and shows car performance stats that the PSP doesn't. Note though that the colour select on the lower screen does not allow black, white or silver!!!
DS upper screen:

DS touchscreen:

PSP:

Now into the game where I compared them on the same track. Might I add that the pictures REALLY deteriorate the look of the PSP screen and do not do it justice while the DS pictures are much closer to the actual appearance. You will notice the much lower resolution on the DS screen:
These are pics at the same places on the same track:

DS:

PSP:

DS:

PSP:

Here, again both at the same place on tha same track, notice the little amount of background detail on the DS:

The DS also had much less (very little in fact) commentator speech, presumably due to the lower capacity of the game storage media.

The lower touchscreen always displays the map, times and a large steering wheel. You can set an option to use the D-pad to steer or to use the on screen wheel which is VERY hard (as anyone who has played V-Rally on a SE P-Series can appreciate) and for me not a useful feature.
(sorry forgot to get a picture)

The other games I had to play were the Metroid Prime demo which is good and graphically impressive at first but on closer inspection not so spectacular, and a strangely addictive game called Feel the Magic by SEGA. This was the best game of the bunch and consists of rediculous mini games including making someone who has swallowed fish vomit them back up by mollesting his stomach:

Blowing out candles or blowing along a yacht by blowing into the DS's microphone, also shouting at the damn thing and other unusual things.
The overall aim is to win the attention of a girl and the graphics are always comic like with people with black bodies with blue and orange clothes. This game clearly doesn't use the full graphic ability of the DS but maximises the fun factor, especially for the young market it is aimed at.

Verdict:
I won't be buying a DS. Maybe if the PSP didn't exist but still the game line-up is typically Nintendo and aimed primarily at children!
Ridge Racer DS, a semmingly more grown up game, is disappointing and seems like they didn't really put the effort in, especially after being so impressed with it on the PSP!

Hope you enjoyed that mini-review

i havent seen any games in action myself, but after all the comments about the Nintendo DS form its hardcore supporters, i kinda thought that maybe the DS is a decent machine but after looking at these screenshots of the game in action(thanks MikLSP)...the DS is an absolute bloody joke!!!...its laughable that DS owners put the PSP down in the way they do.
