MTN is like a typical British set up; nothing is free. Of things to give free, it is access days they offered.

The access days were to compensate The days MTN subs had problems recharging. MTN Nigeria has boosted the whole MTN Group so much that they have over taken Vodacom. The hot news is that Telkom and son Vodacom wants to bid for NITEL and MTEL. E go bloody!

It'll be great to have someone buy NITEL & its mobile arm Mtel. They are both not presently reckoned with in the market. Just imagine, their active subscriber base keeps dropping while everyone else is moving up!

@ihe U rejected MTN free gifts? The sticker will come in handy when u need to cover a dent behind ur car or a cracked tail light. U didnt think that deep did u? Go back tomorrow :-D . @angel I know u r the ISP guru here. How r ISP's coping with the incursions from the Fixed Wireless Telcos? And now DTH satellite folks r jumping in. Competition on all sides!

@coola: The more, the merrier. Competition is the consumer's best friend. The ISPs are not finding it easy. If my phone line can double as my internet access point, why would I go to an ISP? And at the prices on offer...

For example, I hardly visit cyber cafes any longer since Glo GPRS came on. Convergence is not just a buzz word; its king.

@coola,wearg MTN shirt or puttg on their sticker is like advertisg 4 MTN wthout being paid & I'm not going 2 pertake in tht.MTN is wise enough 2 know how 2 reward its subscribers.Even MTN4U is another fraud.

@coola, Aya is right, competition is high now, we are still in the market because of our large subscriber base made of small biz owners who use our ISP 4 their email, and they just still want to maintain their email address for biz's sake. In addition to a few other bigger firms who are still on our domain, we are moving to wireless soon.

People who are opting out now, i guess are the single private home users, who discovered Glo mobile internet and other PTO's.

@angel: Most ISPs have to rebuild their business model or pack up. The PTOs are biting a chunk of their base; the GSM networks are biting another piece.

Some ISPs are already pro-acting, setting up WiFi hotspots. Only thing is, the prices I read are outrageous: one ISP says its 1 hour card for WiFi costs N1,000! That's 10 hours browsing at any cafe, and 48 hours of browsing on my P800 in the comfort of my bedroom!!! Maybe it was a joke

DISC for example offers access to its server FREE for dialup and makes its money from interconnection agreements with PTOs and GSM nets from which people dial in. I use DISC dialup with my MTN line and it works well. Meanwhile, some other ISPs are still charging between N3,000 and N4,000 per month access to their servers, with little difference in performance.

The plot thickens, you will agree.
