Ah.... you actually took my advice ..... that's cool!
I'm keeping my p990 ..., there's no way a nokia is replacing it.

@antz88c: Good for you. If you're comparing an N93 to a P990, you should definitely not spend your hard earned cash on a P990.

We had Lars from Sony Ericsson to the AllAboutSymbian pub meet on Monday night. I asked him about the firmware and he confirmed week 48 as the general release of a new ROM....
So another month or so to wait 8-(

In a way I am glad they are taking the time to do this. Hopefully, this time the tests will be done proper and the bugs will be fixed once and for all.
I wouldn't want to implement a "cosmetic" fix every week...

The only this SE might be setting themselves up for a fall...if stupid bugs still exist after this update then they are going to have frustrated consumers....this is going to be a very important firmware update for them and the future of the p990i |

did he give you details about what the new fw will bring us? namely, more ram at boot, improved memory management, opera update, etc? |

Congrats antz88!!
I sold off my 990i couple of week back took a w810i while waiting for the N95. At least its not a full 12 months wait as compared to p990 he he ha ha. Will review both p990 and N95 but think SE already dampened my desire for p990 but will go for N95. As for coming firmware update, there is a limit what the firmware can do to improve performance and what a waste to such a highly anticipated and beautiful phone. Good luck to you antz88 |

When to open which application?
Really, i'm sure you could avoid a lot of crashes and general bugginess by treating the P990 gingerly, but why should you have to?
Hell, even a Windows Mobile 5 device warns you if it's running out of memory and asks you nicely to close some apps. With the P990i it's reboot after reboot after reboot, or install swiss manager, a 3rd party app, just to get a stable phone. Stupidity.

I have swiss manager and still had the phone hang up. Yes the number of incidences have gone down but on 3 occasaions since I installed swiss manager it has still crashed. Once I lost a photo op, once I could not take an incomming call and the third time I wanted to send a SMS and it crashed as soon as I opened the messaging option.
Still I am living with the P990 as it is the only phone that has a numeric keypad (as I need a phone first) and some sort graffitti - I use SMS a lot. I really wish it had better graffitti though like the O2 Atom's letter recogniser and transcriber.
I know many of you have listed most of the bugs we wished are fixed on the next update. |

Yes, he indicated that the new firmware would address the RAM problems and that applications would use less memory. In other words that after booting there would be more RAM on the P990i.
Can't see why it's taking them so LONG though.... 8-(

Well this new firmware definitely sounds like it should be great! Let's just hope it isn't a let-down. I think it is good that SE is taking their time on this one to hopefully get it right and keep us satisfied. It should be interesting to see whether or not they take any of our usability suggestions into account rather than just fixing bugs and memory issues. For example, customizeable shortcuts on the FO standby screen, allowing custom contact fields, disabling of animations, etc. That might be a good indication of SE's dedication to fully optimizing the device. But I would still be happy if they just fixed the RAM . Only time will tell... |
