Today the device got back to the owner. I had the P990i for 1.5 week. I made some vids and pics of the new menu. The vids contain the media player, menu, camera and videocamera. The pics are gonna be used in my own preview.
http://www.newmobile.nl/eur/nl/phone.php?phone_id=159eb7f and then press Review.
Below you will find the links to the new vids.

Do you want to look at all 30 vids than please check the following link:

I also made pictures with the camera of the device. Those pics will be linked to our website this upcoming night. Via this link you can check them out. The quality is not that good, but acceptable for this device. Vids cannot be made yet. The device does not allow that.

@MR: nice videos!
Question. Arethe menus as slow as they seem to be, and how did you feel about them?

Slow menu? Look at video 13! even with the flip cover its equal in speed as the W900i is with current firmare. Its acceptable and if new software along with refining OS is gonna speed it up then I'm in. I was used to this menu speed on my .. ahem .. Nokia 6620 on Symbian OS 7.1 Core. Eventual the phone was just to bulky with horrible style.
Bring on the p990i > down with the M600 I say! |

Menus are ok! But not yet finished. You can switch off the transitions of the menu and that makes it even faster. It is not sure if will the transitions
in the final ROM. The menu is on certain parts rather slow, but that can
change.

@MR, Have you tried playing any full screen videos on the P990i?
If so, what is the quality like?

More info here re delayed release
Sony's long-awaited P990 smartphone has been delayed further, according to The Wall Street Journal. The phone is now due out in the second quarter of this year, rather than the first quarter. But it may be worth the wait: Sony has now confirmed that the phone will be compatible with both RIM's Blackberry Connect service (assuming it's still around by then) and Microsoft's ActiveSync protocol, making it an even more tempting purchase for corporate buyers who want to hedge their bets (or actually run Exchange Server). The M600, announced yesterday, will also support both services.

im just wandering, when you take the flip off of the p990 you will be leaving keys totally exposed! will there be some kind of fix on cover that fits over the keys so that all you see is the screen so then its more like the previous p series? |

Peter, nope I do not try that. It would nice to use that new Beta player, but I did not instal a better player than the standard one.
Livestrong, leave the flip on the device
Rizwee, no problem. I did not try that, I never found it anywhere yet.

MR, when you get a phone, next time check the features of it BEING a phone. Its an SE no matter it being a smartphone SE has always prided itself on making phones 1st & foremost. How can you miss that? Shame on you.
OK, what other unique features of the phone did you find in 1.5weeks?
>> I'm mostly interested in the media player. Can it stream non rtsp:// files for video/audio content over the BT/WiFi GPRS/UMTS medium?!!!!

Further?
Stupid sites!
said march 2006, afaik it is still feb 2006. That means that the P990 will be delayed for the first time now due to not being released next month.

@MR, watching the videos from 26 onwards, it shoes that videos cannot be viewed in flip closed mode. It shows that only radio and music can be played via the media player function, is that correct?
Personally i would prefer to be able to view videos in flip closed mode as well as flip off mode, why do they not allow this option in flip closed mode!! Can't be that difficult surely!

First of all, I would like to say ot you all that the device is far from ready and that special things certain people mention will not be checked by me. It is getting just a first impression. I already broke one device, which needed a reflash of the ROM. To give you any idea of the stability.
rizwee, zoom is less than N70. I thought that was 20x. I had no clue what the P990i was, but not that amount.
prom1, why should I try to find a call record function, it is not even stable making calls. If I see it I will try it. And do not judge my abilities of testing a device please, thank you
Other unique features? There is enough in the device. But nothing special that you say WAUUW. I tried the Business card scanner, for instance. The rest is not really hot. The streaming time is not importang to test now, because BT and Wifi are not working that well. You are asking things which are not key issues people are waiting for.
Peter, that is correct! Maybe a certain flip closed player will be around, but the standard one cannot. When you want to access the photo/video album from the flip closed mode and the camera it asks you to open the flip.

i have never used any of the past p series with flip, id like 2 be able 2 use the p990 without one also, if it means the buttons being exposed then the flip will have to stay! its my only concern with the phone.
