Triluminos can be implemented with any panel, IGZO or Whitemagic or any other tech
And no, Triluminos doesn't affect white levels
Are you sure?
I guess it reduces the brighness compared with conventiol LCDs because there's no white backlighting so it has to blend rgb. I hope they use it along white magic.
Is there anyone who has actually tested this type of display so I can get these technical facts?
Edit: Sorry, one more question; Is it possible to use Sharp's moth-eye technology in smartphones?

Moth eye is similar to OptiContrast, nothing new.

@randomuser, @MartenR
Triluminos is not a filter layer added to the panel... Triluminos is actually the backlight it self but a Trademark of a specific type of it to be exact... well, it's a more specific type of LED lighting...
Normal panels uses CCFL in order to bring the lighting... then they started to use LED's to provide smaller and less power consumption... also less heat compared to CCFL...
the first implementation of LED lighting varied between same as CCFL implementation with discarting filters to distribute the light evenly on the screen ( thought it's not perfect )... then they provided better implementation by using Edge LED where all the edges of the display have an LCD source to have more uniform lighting...
Triluminos at first used very tiny white LED array panel as a light source. this will give the backlight the perfect uniformity, where every pixel has the exact amount of light as any other pixel has... and because of using LEDs directly without that discarting filters the white color spectrum was wider ( called GAMUT ) comparing to Edge LED's... and better even than CCFL..... and by switching to White RGB LED's they have the best GAMUT of all panels...
Then they brought the next advance which is much more advance also... as one of the weakness of LCD panels is that while the liquid crystals in their off mode to block the light from the backlight panel, they actually leak small amount of the light, that's why LCD's doesn't have a clear black levels compared to OLED ( which doesn't need any backlights as the organic pixels them self are actually colored lights ).. here's the advance...
As Triluminos have small tiny LED's in the back these LED's can actually be controlled, so you can turn off some and run others... what does that mean ? it means whenever there's a black area in the display, the display driver can actually turn off or dim the LED's behind that black area so there will be no light leak, and more deep is the black... and in another hand save power by not wasting energy on lighting that is being blocked !!
The original Triluminos used those tiny LED's as a backlight panel... even though these are tiny and each consume little energy.. having too many of them will consume a lot, and knowing that the first Sony demonstrated Triluminos panel had too many of these small LED's.. actually it had almost 6 Millions !! ( the prototype was called Crystal LED by that time, not Triluminos )... and here's the problem.. power, cost and production was very high and tough for a production TV...
Until they switched to Quantum Dot, from QD Vision inc.... QD actually are very similar to OLED from the point that these subpixels actually emits light.. you can even build a complete display by just QD without LCD panel...
and by switching to QD, the negatives of back LED's just vaporized...

@Xajel
That's the "old" Triluminos that you described. The TRILUMINOS tech of 2013 from Sony is merely a filter and not RGB backlighting as used in Sony Bravia XBR8/X4500 TV back in 2008.

@Xajel
Thanks for that long explanation.
Do you know how bright will Trilominus displays be compared with LCDs and AMOLEDs? |

Why don't we just wait for actual Triluminous Display Technology to be released and explained by Sony themselves?
Backlight filter, or entirely new backlight technology. As long as the colour gamut is good, colour accuracy is good, brightness and viewing angles are good, I don't really care.

It's a filter behind the panel as I mentioned.

the Shield console, by nVidia was announced today 350$
Guess isn't just Sony making overpriced products
At least Sony got a reason to.. Sincerly, I thinks this is gonna be so much a fail for nVidia, although the concept is kinda nice |

4.3" 1080p WhiteMagic, the rumor says. Is that even possible? A PPI of 512..
And if so, will we see it in any coming Sony phones? |
