A WM-based Sony Ericsson? That sounds like treason against Symbian. And can we be sure the result will be lower prices? Moto played with WM and I am not sure the Qs are as affordable as the average Symbian device.

I have what i could say was a long time relationship with windows mobile. I owned in order xda (the first wm phone), xda 2, xda 2i, pda2k, hp 1615 (first ipaq with phone), imate k-jam. They often have hardware specs that truly look different and sound exciting to tech loving newbies.
I maintain my assertion about their being good pda and lousy phones. And about the interface, I maintain that there are no brand specific differentiation between say HTC, E-ten or Asus devices. Even icons are the same!
I know it is difficult to persuade people to stop loving their gadgets, but when I shelled out 140k to buy e90 knowing fully well that I can buy 2 or 3 good wm devices with this money, I was drawing on my long time experience and association with wm. Trust me on this, one day, the wow factor will wear off and if you really need a good converged device (as opposed to a toy to thrill your friends), you will move away from wm to more serious things.
SE and even Nokia can and probably should do wm to satisfy people who want it. One problem with wm is that it is not supported by people who have real experience and expertise in phone making. Maybe Nokia's incursion into wm realm can bring a good phone out of this good pda os. |

Earlier this year, the rumour was that SE and HTC may merge. A couple of months back, a trusted Chinese newspaper hinted that SE asked HTC to build it one million OEM units of an unspecified model.
It seems so unlikely that SE will partner with HTC (WM largest licensee) not after SE and Nokia snubbed Microsoft years ago when MS was learning the ropes of cell phone business. The fear of Nokia, SE and a couple of other manufacturers was that given the financial base of MS, it might later monopolise smartphone OS market as it did PCs.
MS partnered Sendo to learn the business, dumped Sendo and gave an uprising HTC its first major license.
SE going WM will be like SE punching Nokia below the belt and that will be a major victory for MS. Well, time will tell if all these are rumours, Q1 is not far off. |

@adrusa: Generally, brand customizations to core OS interface are little and this not particular to WM devices alone. Check other platforms and you'll agree that relatively, WM customizations are more.
If you are saying WM interface has not changed significantly from PPC 2002 to WM6, I agree with you. This is glaring when compared to improvements in Symbian devices. But have you observed that other platforms are adopting the "dull" WM Today(stanby) screen where messages, appointments, tasks are easily accessed?
Today, the iPhone interface is currently influencing improvements in interface in all platforms. New HTC devices now have Touchflo running on WM interface. UIQ users now have Gdesk, a free UI app that has spiced up the UIQ interface. Even Nokia does not want to be left out. So I already see MS reworking WM6 for full touch experience.
This may interest you.

Adrusa: I agree completely that WM devices are good PDAs and lousy phones (generic-speaking). However, like brym! said, user interfacee differences - even in Symbian or Palm devices - are just as minimal across a wide range of models.

Talking about WM phones, if rumours are anything to go by, SonyEricsson plan to announce a WM device in Q1 of 2008. Maybe that way, prices of WM based phones will become affordable.

@area: what line of salvation are you looking for? If it is from the clutches of nokia fever, then buying the phone for your wife is a good first step. But if its salvation from ur kids slobbering on ur phones, the only solution to that is to pack out of the house until they are of university age! My son's slob killed my adored T630i charging point yday. why kids love the metallic taste of the charging point, i dont know. Its about time they release a portless phone with wireless charging! Read about some prototype ideas on it a few years back. |

I escaped the scourge of kids killing phones by making sure that my phones were always out of reach. While they were younger, my phone stayed on shelves and high tables whenever I wasn't using them. And I drummed the message into their ears that dad's phones were out of bounds.
Now, they are a little older, but they stay away from my phones. The brainwashing worked Why? While they have enough sense not to touch my phone, they are often caught fingering my wife's phones.

@Area: for the specs you've listed, your best bet will be the K320. Though limited memory may be a minus.
W200 has all u want apart from bluetooth, but has expandable memory.
If you are willing to spend upto 20k you could get the the K750 or W700. But these are all monoblock designs.
For 19k you could also get the Nokia 5200 express music phone, which is a slide phone. 17k will get u a Nokia 6085 flip phone.

@AYA: once my son got to walking there is hardly anywhere he cant reach. Unless i place the phone in my bedroom on top of a wardobe where there isnt anything to use to climb it. recharging the phones are the hard. he'll just yank out the wire and run off laughing! |
