From wikipedia: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Local_number_portability
Local number portability, (LNP) for fixed lines, and full mobile number portability (FMNP), for mobile phone lines, refers to the ability to transfer either an existing fixed-line or mobile telephone number assigned by a local exchange carrier (LEC) and reassign it to another carrier. In most cases, there are limitations to transferability with regards to geography, service area coverage and technology.
Most cellular telephone companies will charge for this conversion as a regulatory cost recovery fee.
In number portability the “donor network” provides the number and the “recipient network” accepts the number. The operation of donating a number requires that a number is “snapped out” from a network and “snapped into” the receiving network. If the subscriber ceases to need the number then it is normal that the original donor receives the number back and “snaps back” the number to its network. The situation is slightly more complex if the user leaves the first operator for a second and then subsequently elects to use a third operator. In this case the second operator will return the number to the first and then it is assigned to the third.
When a provider receives a request to port a telephone number from a new customer, that provider sends an industry-standard LSR (Local Service Request) to the existing (or "old") provider. When the Old Provider receives this request, it sends back FOC (Firm Order Confirmation) and the 5-day max process of porting the number begins. Either provider can initiate the port using a SOA or LSOA (Service Order Activator) which directly edits the NPAC database mentioned before. If the new provider initiates the port, it is called a "pull," and if the old provider initiates, it is a "push." Once the number is pulled or pushed, the new provider must "activate" the number using the LRN of the switch serving the customer. At the point this is completed, the number is ported.

@amby: Glad you liked it too. I see you went back to pick the m600, comfortable with the keys now? The good predictive text of the W950 is helping me out with text input; the flushed keypad and the small virtual keyboard are terrible. But I'm crazy about the 4 gig memory and dedicated walkman. And opera mini rocks on it too than on my windows mobile. For Pocket PC owners: try out freestyl launcher from http://www.whoneedsaniphone.com you'll love it.

Yeah Brym I went back for the m600. Smartphones are like drugs one taste and you're hooked. I'm getting over my initial grouse with the phone and the handwriting recognition plus predictive text makes life easy.
Spot on! Opera mini on this phone rocks.

How big is this GDesk? I keep forgetting to try downloading when i am online with my laptop. Gone are the days of reckless phone downloads via awoof gprs.
P990 UPDATE
The predictive text is really good. Sometimes its actually scary. Especially when it predicts the next word im about to type. Phrases i have never used on the phone with thousands of alternative combinations get widdled down to just the phrase i was thinking. This na white man jazz!
Still having difficulty getting the update server to update on my PC. But if i dont run too many simultaneous apps, my phone is fine. |

All you P series people na wa o!
Upon all the grumbling and cries of people about P series non-reliability, you guys still risked your necks and bought it.

I will consider the W950 inspite of the bugs, virus, mosquitoes, bacteria and HIV in it.
Surprisingly my W950 is very stable, only one crash so far, it came with the latest firmware.

I heard that its slower than the p910 and can't multitask as good as p910.
Do you miss the call and drop button?
How convenient is 1 handed operation when making calls and SMS?
What about the lack of camera in a high end phone?
The keypad is just terrible for me (both M600 and W950)

Well, I've not realy used the P910 so I'll leave that to amby and abu to answer.

Nope! No big deal to any WM touchscreen user. Most often I call from my contact list by finger taps.

No problem with calls as stated above. Data input like long SMS and mails are rather tedious with the W950 because the flush keypad is not very responsive. Also The virtual keyboard is too small. The excellent predictive text feature helps a lot.

I don't miss that. I can't remember how many pictures I snapped with my HTC devices...too few.

@Mamba: For a phone that costs just N30k the M600i is an excellent buy. I use handwriting recognition for inputing text (which is as good as scribbling on a piece of paper) plus the phones ability to complete my word for me after the first three letters and even suggest the next word automatically, makes text input a breeze.
I haven't had a crash since I got the phone, apart from when I installed an incompatible Java software and the phone froze while attempting to run the application.
I do not miss the camera as I still have the W810i.
Compared with the P910i? M600i comes out tops when it comes to multitasking and hence speed.
I can tell you this cos I currently have both phones. Agreed, P910 loads applications faster when launched for the first time, but afterwards, they both open at the same rate but you can tell the M600 is faster when you have to switch between applications or when sending text messages.
I can't wait for the W960i |
