Rooting is generally used as having access to the system files of the OS i.e.Android. This 'root access' allows certain functions and blocks to be implimented or bypassed e.g. 2.1 doesn't have native wifi tethering but with root access an extra installed app can access the system privilages and add in the functionality. Root access also means you can use certain specially apps to remove preinstalled apps (moxier is the prime deadweight example).
Manfuacturers don't give root access out of the box as it opens the door to inexperienced owners to potentially render their expensive new phone a fancy looking paperweight.
Rooting is not to ne confused with bootloader access. Access to the bootloader gives the ability to load custom ROMs e.g. maybe a plain 2.2 install or a heavily customised 2.1 with Flash back ported or the fabled multitouch drivers installed. Basically then everything is possible within the constraints of the hardware and the efforts of freelance/hobby developers (the xda guys are famed for their skills).

Big_D One of my main reasons for rooting is so I could install Typefresh and change my system fonts.I dont like DroidSans

If SE manages to make this processor run as fast or even faster than iphone speed, which is damn bloody fast, yet saves battery life, why not?? Lets hope they have the ability to do it ^^ |

I got a question. Have you rooted your X10 and if yes how much difference do you notice when it comes to UI speed?

@Ricky D : thanks, I kinda understand the gist. I dunno if I want to do that though, cuz it'll might really screw up my phone. I like to tinkle with technology myself, but the kinda who gets it right after several try. Something like this seem risky, dun want to damage my xperia x10. |

On question on 2.1. The email client now displays emails with a red mark on the left hand side. I presumed this meant unread (like the green mark in 1.6) however unread emails are also displayed with a colour over the whole mail subject. So what does the red mark mean - or is this a quirk in 2.1? |

I have rooted my X10 white v2.1 using the superoneclick method described here at the xda forums. The process is quite simple if you read the first post, it's all there. Basically you need to download the latest version then run the .bat file and press root when connecting your phone in USB Debugging mode.
In the actual process of rooting the phone the risks are quite minimal, you just need to figure out how to use the superoneclick client. Once I rooted I installed an app called 'super user permissions' or something like that which basically controls which apps can access the system files (this is for security I guess and is necessary), I then installed 'Titanium backup' which backs up apps (system apps and user installed apps). This is strongly advisable. At this point you have to be careful not to un-install apps which are clearly for use of the system e.g. don't uninstall the dialler or the messaging app or any of the settings or you could start to screw things up. I just uninstalled moxier, wisepilot, setup wizard (it starts everytime I start the phone!!) and quadrapop. I suppose you could also take out the Japanese, Korean and Chinese keyboards if you want, I didn't because I use them. Timescape I heard is quite integral so don't uninstall that. You get the picture.
I installed Barnicle tethering for wifi tethering, there is also 'wireless tether for root users' which does bluetooth tethering as well as wifi. Not really gone more adventurous than that.
Speed-wise, there are still lagging points but in general the phone is fast if I kill a few tasks. Faster than before but not sure if that's because of the 2.1 update or the fact I cleared crap out of the pre-installed apps.
Do a backup with the SE backup and restore app before you do anything and that way if you do screw up or make changes you don't know how to reverse you can reflash in SEUS and restore from the backup.

Anyone here knows a good memo/note app that can Read and edit from import text files, edit it and save on SD?
I need one, since Xperia x10 doesn't seem to provide a note or memo pad... unless I'm wrong. I'm also still looking for a customizable dual/multi- clock that basically can be set a different time than the integral clock.
I still can't believe SE left these out when designing the phone. wouldn't most people want a multiple clock (not the same as what I wanted) and a memo/note app integrated into the phone for users. most phones does, especially smartphones, for people on the go and businesspeople, and old SE phones had, too, right?
To Ricky_D : Thanks for that info. Just wanna know if there will be anything wrong with rooting the phone? will anything malfunction or not work?
I do want to uninstall unwanted apps like Moxier and quadrapop. |

I still have full functionality, in fact I have more with the options of adding in wireless tethering. Think of a glass wall in a library with doors that they're locked. This wall has no function except to stop you getting to a certain section of a library, you can see the books (system files) on the other side but cannot change them, remove them or add any new ones. Rooting is basically unlocking the doors to allow access to the books on the other side. If you really wanted to you can open the doors, remove the stuff that's taking up space (moxier and quadrapop) then lock them all up (unroot the phone) again.
I haven't experienced any malfunctioning. The only thing I know that has happened is early adopters experiencing a loop when trying to root, but if you follow the instructions you won't get this.

BigD I'm not encouraging you to root your phone but Id just like to say the first time doing a root procedure or flashing is terrifying.Then once you do it you realise it pretty straightforward.Its what you do afterwards is what could cause the problems.My first attemp at using Typefresh (used for changing fonts) was disatrous.Phone wouldn't bootup past logo.Learnt a big lesson.Take your time and read the instructions carefully.I had missed a Line.Rooting ain't essential.Itsjust a must for me because of the changing fonts.Also Barnacle Wifi Tether to tether with my netbook.

Just a heads up,I've never gotten Wifi Tether to work on the X10.It says there's a Kernel issue.Give it a try though and let me now if it works for you.
Barnacle Wifi Tether works great though.

Also I want to know, what is the purpose of Market Widget? I mean it shows no info. When I click on the widget, it directs to market that's about it!
