Does anyone here know anybody that has subscribed for the unlimited GPRS of MTN and glo (=N=12,000 per month). Is it reliable and fast? Are there any other aditional hidden charges attached to the service?

Mamba: both packages are contract, so there is a monthly access charge of between N1,250 - N1,500. To signup, there is also a security deposit (about 5k - 8k). Besides those, I am not aware of any other charges.

I was at an MTN friendship centre to signup months ago, but their non-customer friendly 'customer service' led to my walking out on them.

Both unlimited GPRS services run on the regular GPRS platform of the respective networks. On that note, Glo should be decidedly faster. But that is only an educated guess, of course.

Note: the Glo package is data-only (you cannot use it for voice calls at all), while MTN is not restricted so.

@AYA: there are some mobiles that do handle data, they were selling those in Kano some time back. seems none are in stock at Starcomms now but i have a few.

@mamba: i'm using my Mtel right now. in Abj Mtel works better than MTN. GPRS are capped below 54kb/s and in naija that is theoretical as gprs shares bandwidth with voice, voice having priority. best speed i've seem is 18kb/s for a few mins

I like the M600 but certainly wouldn't buy it because of the lack of a dedicated call and drop button. A lack of this feature means the screen will wear out fast because I have to touch it everytime I want to make a call because I suffer from a severe case of sweaty palms. Besides, imagine how many times you have to redial in Nija due to poor networks. Same reason I won't buy the P1, W960 or iphone.

You keep forgetting the jog dial can also do that, plus the back button can be used to end calls

I know there are. I have one. But Starcomms say that:
1. They are no longer offering the localised numbers (e.g. 01853xxxx) on mobiles, and that they no longer offer the old-type Nokia/Motorola phones;
2. The new mobile phones (the chinese types) are not data-capable; and
3. As such, new internet subscriptions are available via PCMCIA cards & USB modems only.

When I pressed further, the lady said that my old localised mobile number would continue to work for both voice and data, but if I need to replace it, I would either have to migrate to the new phones and be ported to the new 07028 lines, or keep my old 01853xxxx line and use it with a desktop phone as replacement. She was emphatic that it wasn't a case of being out of stock, but of phasing out.

Well, that's what customer care told me. If they've got their info upside down, that's their business really; not ours.

@AYA: just like u said old phones are being phased out & the current batch of Huawei and Hisense phones dont offer data, but if u go to any auth.dealer (most people go straight to starcomms) with old stock u can get the phones. i hear that the next batch of phones coming in include data capable mobiles. when they will become available is yet to be seen.

Abubakar: that's comforting to hear. The very idea that one is limited to PC cards and desktop phones is just retrogressive. Especially in this age when some of us were also looking forward to actually browsing on CDMA handsets along with modem capabilities.... Thanks for the correction.

Which raises the issue of unreliable info from customer care again. Brym also had an irritating experience with Reltel CC recently giving him inaccurate info. I tire.

@AYA: the problem is in 2 parts.
1- there is some info, eg the incoming phones, that CC might not know or as there is no roll out date, might not want to divulge.
2- CC wouldnt market on behalf of dealers. they are to help move stock from thier own offices. but as always, most customers always prefer making all enquiries "from source". all purchases too.

@brym: Thanx 4 d update. the price drop is on a heavy slope! someone offered 20k for my P900! the only question is what have peace tidings removed from the packaging? a high mem card? head phones? USB cable? extra stylus? they used to do those kind of moves some time back. i was a victim of 32mb mem card when everyone else got 64 from other shops! one guy got 128!

@Amby, using jogdial to make calls on M600 is definitely gonna be inconvenient. I have decided to wait for Nokia 6120 until it's available in Nija. Cheap, small and light symbian with all the neccessary features.

Abu: I'm currently managing a humble E61i .

The avatar I am using is the P1i, and is the closest thing to the E61i from the SE stable.
