I believe that most of us will know whether the placement of the stylus is good to go when we have the P990i in our hands.
We will have this talk again maybe in March/April or maybe even December 2006 just in time for Christmas so that we will have a very stable UIQ 3.

prom1 ... i use my phone for business. mostly PIM stuff, but also for taking notes when i'm in a meeting, and occasionally i've gone online with it to look up some things.
i'm sure it's not a necessity, but i wouldn't want any other device other than a smartphone.
regarding the lefty-stylus ... i never noticed this
but the test of using your left hand to reach across to get to the right-handed stylus is not really ideal, since this means you have to fiddle with your bad hand (if you are a righty), and even if it is your good hand, you're doing something with it that it's not used to.
i tried the same moves i use on the stylus on a "virtual" left stylus, and i must say it would not make that much of a difference for me.
i don't need to cover the screen, i don't have to tilt the phone, i just do it a little differently.
not a problem, we'll adapt.

Are you guys that crippled that your complaining over the Left-hand side placement of the stylus?!! Get real.
Think for a moment:
1) This is for the guys. How easy is it- if right handed - to hold your Member to take a piss?!!
2) How easy is it for you to whipe your arse?!
3) how easy is it to watch TV and serve yourself a fork full of food with nearly a miss on your face without "watching the fork" move from plate to your mouth.
Now SERIOUSLY consider the above for just 10 seconds & try doing that with your left hand (for Right handed users only). Although doing #3 would be just as easy with your left hand, I'm sure most of us could do it flawlessly on the 3rd attempt without much thought or retraining. However I personally wouldnt try #2 unless my entire right ARM was broken ... for obvious reasons .... I like my hands clean lol. Now, #1 isnt that hard actually but Gods below it feels weird no matter how many times you do it; plan and simple!!! To me it doesnt even feel like my own hand & thats just wrong! I'll bet we can all aim ok; but its just strange.
Now, the feeling of #1 above is the SAME of Left-Handed users on a BlackBerry device where they cannot use their thumb on the scroll wheel. YET for right-handed users its not as bad having the scrollwheel on the left of the device in our right hand or left hand ->not so big a deal we just adjust without even thinking or just resort to the "proper" hand (again right handers in this regard) depending on mood or random thought pattern. Now for unsheathing the stylus from the back of the device .... pullllleeeeease! Its a simple matter like scratching the back of your left hand if your left thumb is facing the sky. sure you'll slightly move your left hand but I'm willing to bet that if you dont think about it, you'd pick the device off the shelf and withdraw the stylus with your right hand without much thought.
Why ....? because whether the stylus is on the left of the device for right handers or on the right of the device for left handers ... you are STILL picking up the stylus with the hand your gonna write with.
This isnt kindergarten folks.
PS moderators if you think my above three analogies are offensive please reread ... its supposed to provoke the thought of simple actions that arent thought about on a day to day or every 3 day basis that is from repetitive movement first as learned behavior thats been memorized into almost mechanical/physical movement. Just as if you lost your hand a week ago and if relaxed enough you were offered a beer you'd most likely lift your dominant hand that you lost the limb with to grab the beer - just like a phantom itch is physical memory.

Well - i've wandered around from phone (WM5) to phone (S60) since selling my P910i last year and i wish i hadn't! The P8/9xxx series is truly awesome and nothing comes close - i've now pre-ordered my P990i from expansys UK and i just cannot wait. I'll be gutted if it's a May release but i have a feeling it's going to be more like late feb/early march |

Now, if you were intelligent DrShit, you'd realize there were 2 more points. But you must have cognitive desonance. The point you dont see is the mental & physical connection of a learned behaviour. How its repetiveness practiced over time becomes so ingrained that changing how you do the practice becomes more difficult than you think.
Again my 3 points are things that in almost everyday if not everyday life that we all do - men that is - but funny thing is you couldnt see that.
My point for that long solilique is because 2 pages with 6+ ppl complaining about the placement of a stylus when the built in keyboard can be just as effective in data entry & navigation.

Stylus placement is irrelevant as far as im concerned...
Its moved a few inches to the left, so when i go to take it out im gonna move my hand a few inches to the left... (in comparison to using the 900/910?!?) |

Whoa! I really didn't expect my harmless question about the placement of the stylus to bring on such a debate. I personally don't mind the new location; I was just asking if anyone knew the logic behind the change.
New question: Does the new QWERTY keyboard allow for complete one-handed navigation? I've seen the arrow keys for left and right down by the spacebar. Basically I'm asking if we can use the device without touching the screen. Anyone know? |

We will only know the logic behind the placement when someone opens their P990 and looks at what's inside the shell.
Regarding the keyboard navigation, I'm not sure but I believe some of the symbols in the keyboard may have to to with that?

If not, someone correct me.

Hmm I have a question about the sms with P990...
When you remove the flip and "only" have qwerty will there still be T9 or do you have to type all the letters in the word?
I've never tried a phone with qwerty and can only imagine that T9 will be faster since it helps you spelling... |

It has an even more developed version of "T9" called predictive words. So it suggest words before you have written them.
