Tough break there, Brix. As long as you're enjoying what you're doing though, it's all good.

@Wanqa, geez boet, the competition's really tight on your side of the big water! I can imagine the frenzy we'd have here if similar promotions were to be offered...

@Francois, are you still ok? That St.Patrick's pie doesn't sound too kosher...
I'm not superstitious, merely mildly stitious.

Nope, im going to side with this monday being excruciating. I lost my boyfriend and a very close friend today, and a thick, morbid, cynical gloom is descending.

@francois, its strange. When i get mildly depressed i work excellently and am consistently driven. Its nothing when compared to the focus and power of manic episodes, but its got a lot more stamina!

@ Kryptik, competition is indeed a good thing, but SA's data rates still make a mockery of the UK networks' data rates, hence I post 95% of the time from a PC.

A few cellphone pics taken with da wanqsta's Nokia 7600 and P900 at the memorable Rammstein gig at the Astoria in London:
(cue Beavis's voice: "Fire--Fire--Fire!")

Taken with my Nokia 7600 at the Killswitch Engage gig at The Brixton Academy in London, high up in the balconies of the theatre and this time far from the madding crowd in the moshpit.

This is what i love about gloomy weather and my phone and the guitar-i sat outside watching rocketboom for a good hour or so, then started working on a tune on the guitar that has been stuck in my head for a couple of days. using vibe, a midi composer on my phone i quickly had the tune going. now i can work on more original riffs for it. this is a more punky song, but like i said, i am varied.

(gotta remember to use russian opera)

this is for me what technology is about. the ability to be able to creatively express yourself wherever you are, and use it to help you advance in your skills. my musical skills have really improved since i got this phone. i made a good choice:)

@francois

I play guitar (not lately, had to sell it. But I'll but I better one soon) and sing. I've been in 2 or 3 bands in my time. Mostly an altrnative rock/pop thing (However my voice allows me to go).

And I believe that due to the fact that BEE has been going on for 12 years now, and leaves no real opportunity for overseas companies to freely have a crack at the SA market, the way they see fit, it has forced us into a kind of semi depression where local music being expendable has been shirked in favour of more BEE schemes and so on.

Been trawling the internet but can't find article which appeared in Business Report a couple of weeks back where Cell C's new CEO Jeffrey Hedberg said there were no plans for the network to introduce 3G...so it will be EDGE for the forseeable future.

@ rhino, hope everything turns out better than you could ever imagine-if it is meant to be, it will be(unless you really stuff up, so be careful! Women ARE complicated)

@ sosial, my friend in the uk has given up totally on music. The market there is not suited to new music as it is to bands who are just the craze of the day. Our market is more suited for something new, and original. It is not easy to make it, but international interest means record label. The day of a record contract meaning you made it is long over. In fact, 90 percent of the time it means nothing more than that you are pretty much screwed. Music has always been business, but now, if you want to make it you have to consider the business side as well as your talent.

If there's someone in SA able to unlock N70's, they could really be onto something here...Phones4U are selling PAYG Orange-branded n' locked N70's for £139.95! (approx R2000!)

South African mobile operator Cell C is considering offering a third-generation (3G) service to compete with bigger rivals MTN and Vodacom, and to complement its EDGE service, but the move will depend on the feasibility of such an offering.

This is according to CTO Pierre Obeid, who says: “Currently we are looking at the market – studying the viability of offering 3G.

“We might offer 3G services in due course, but unless there is a market need for the service, we will not roll-out a 3G network.”

Obeid adds that the company, currently offering an EDGE service significantly slower than Vodacom or MTN's 3G and high-speed downlink packet access broadband options, has consciously focused on home PC Internet access through a USB modem allowing consumers to use Cell C EDGE.

“That was a market that was not previously addressed,” he says.

According to another senior source inside the network operator, who does not wish to be named, Cell C has seen a 20% month-on-month growth in data traffic over the past six months.

However, subscriber numbers on Cell C's EDGE offerings were not forthcoming at the time of publication.

Carrying 85% of traffic

Despite a popular belief that Cell C is still largely “piggy-backing” off Vodacom's infrastructure through a roaming agreement, Obeid reveals 85% of its traffic (voice and data) is now handled by Cell C infrastructure.

“We now have 2 165 base stations,” he says, predicting that by 2009 this will be more than 2 400.

However, he also points out that Cell C is likely to continue using Vodacom's network for the foreseeable future in specific areas – notably remote locations where potential subscriber numbers do not justify rolling out infrastructure, but where coverage is needed.

“Our roaming agreement with Vodacom? Well, we consider it an advantage to Cell C, not a disadvantage,” Obeid argues.

Meeting obligations

After five years, Cell C claims to cover 63% of the population and 28.5% of the geography of SA. This is above its licence obligations of 60% population and 8% geographical coverage six years into its existence – terms stipulated at Cell C's inception.

Questioned on the heated dispute between Cell C and Vodacom dating back to May, when Vodacom accused Cell C of sending it “technically illegal” data, causing its own network to fail, Obeid is tight-lipped.

“We're still talking to Vodacom on this issue – there's no further statement at this stage except to say that we still believe in the statements we made at the time.”

Vodacom had, at the time, temporarily terminated interconnection links with the smaller operator, and both sides blamed each other for the problem.

I read about the Virgin prepaid starter packs going down to R55 (w/ R50 airtime) at CNA, Edgars and Jet. Considering the data rates and the amount I'm on the net w/ my cell I decided to give it a crack and hope their service improves in the future.

Not a single person knew what I wasa talking about. They all told me that it was still R89. When I quoted the ad I just got a blank stare.

i love this country.

I'm pissed off coz I've been standing in a queue at the Cape Town traffic department's Green Point branch for close on an hour and there doesn't seem to be any progress.
