@Brix: Most people here own more than one phone line not out of choice, but out of necessity. I for one bought a glo line simply because at the time, only that network offered gprs. I hardly use it these days, but I still carry it around. The MTN, I bought for free GPRS, and still maintain it for its cheap on net calls.
If one network offers me all I require at a reasonable price, I wouldn't have any reason to carry more than one phone.

well guys, billing on celtel is now here 2 stay. i tested it and can confidently say that it's 10k per kb. i also found out that you can't browse if you have anything less than 50 naira credit. @amby, what's the way forward now? there has to be a loophole in celtel's system somehow. i need free gprs. |

If you need free gprs, you will get it when 3G trial commences 
How about a competition on who first goes 3G here?
@Brix You are right about 9ja subs being fickle. I was an MTN subscriber but I have since switched to Glo. But again, the networks give really nice deals for "on net" calls so it is better to use an MTN line to call an MTN pal. It is more cost effective (it seems) to have more than one line than to depend on only one GSM line. I will like to hear what others think of this assertion.
That is why I am not so excited about the new Celtel Unity tariffs that DOES NOT reward Celtel subs with cheap Celtel-to-Celtel tariffs. In fact it penalises them with higher than average tariffs.
@All I have been using the Reltel Friends and Family (FAF) tariffs for 3 weeks now. My circle of FAF using Reltel is still around 6 ppl. The package allows free Reltel-to-Reltel calls. It is a whole new experience: 100 times better than Free mid-night calls. You just call and talk as long as you want. N500 airtime lasts for about 7 days. I don't regret buying 2 lines for my 2 fave gals in Abuja. Its been a lot of fun talking to them several times a day. I think we do over 20 minutes per day.
(The other day, one of them must have been lonely and she went on and on about her village, her family and her ex-roommate for 57 minutes!)
But Reltel does not do a good job of getting GSM lines. The call quality is wack. I am surprised at this since some of you have written about the quality of CDMA vs. GSM. I had even flirted with the idea of going CDMA all the way (dumping my 4 GSM lines!) but the call quality for GSM lines has ruined the whole project. Calling GSM lines is N19 /minute, so it is supposed to be more economical too.

Now I know you are really bored.
I'll try the new Celtel billing on my wife's line to see what it is like before I make up my mind. Of course, there is no doubt that cost-wise, it is a better option than what I pay on Glodirect at the moment. But I'm also thinking of stability and reliability here.

has anyone tried the starcomms 3g service, how fast and reliable is it? |

None of my 2 Celtel lines were provisioned. I requested for settings again and there was no acknowledgement or response from +232. I think this service has been deactivated to prevent more people from joining. Well, I'm still holdind on tightly to Glodirect. |

@Brym: you're right, 232 no longer acknowledges requests for gprs activation. I guess you left it to late. |

Yes i can confirm it now, i just loaded, and celtel is now billing, but it thik its the cheapest so far. |

I'll love to see Celtel make this official and also officially extend this to Pay As You Go users; not just contract subscribers like other networks have. Right now, Glo is playing games with GPRS - they introduced flat monthly billing plans for GPRS, but say:
1. I have to get another SIM (a data-only line), and so cannot enjoy it on my existing line
2. I have to sign another contract and pay another set of fees, including another security deposit
It is sheer nonsense. Today they sent an SMS announcing a reduction of my credit limit from N6,400 to N3,000. For what - management decision. For the first time in years, Glo are thinking and acting like losers. Is the Glo magic over?

@Brym: I successfully configured a Celtel line for gprs yesterday, so I suggest you try sending the activation sms again.
@Aya: are u serious about the Glo requirements for gprs on contract lines? thats backward thinking. |
