Hi people, sorry I haven't been around in ages, keep up the puzzles and riddles. Would like to impose one rule though, which I'm sure nobody will disagree with; please don't use search engines go get answers, as this not only defeats the point of using your brain but ruins the fun for everybody else.
Heres a challenge for the forum, I DARE you all to get the posts to over 1000, without spamming esato of course, no, just pure riddles and puzzles!
Cheers

Clever Arithmetic (from Marilyn vos Savant's column "Ask Marilyn")
A professor tells her assistant that she dined with three people last night. She also tells him that the sum of the three people's ages is twice the secretary's own age and that the product of the three people's ages is 2,450. Then, she asks him to tell her the ages of the three people. After a while, the assistant tells the professor that he doesn't have enough information to solve the problem. She agrees and adds that she is older than all three people with whom she dined. The assistant, who knows her age, promptly gives the professor the correct ages. The question is: What are the ages of all five people in this story?
i will check in a day or so Good luck

X + Y +X = 2W
XYZ= 2450
2450 |49
50 | 5
10 | 5
2 | 2
1
So there ages must be 49, 5, and 10 [5 X 2],
OR
98, 25, 2
Or 50, 49, 1
But which possibility is it?
AHA
Since there are 2 possibilities over 49 and only one under it, the professors age must be between 49 and 51, and hence 50
So the combinations are probably
5, 10, 49
and the other two are 50 and
5+ 10 +49 /2 = 32
THAT TOOK ME A LOT OF TIME.
AND IM BACK
But wait it could also be 7 ,14, 25 , 23, x {26,50}
OK IM CONFUSED.

You must be joking. How do you google for those kinds of puzzles? That's why I have this:

@yazan, just a reminder, we already agreed that answer posts should not be edited to avoid the confusion as to who got the answer first.

no one with the answer if not i will post it up in acouple hours..
Consider all factorizations of 2450 into integers a, b, c. (Since
these three variables represent ages, all factors above 98 should
be excluded!) The remaining triples (a,b,c) sum to distinct values
_except_ 50+7+7 = 49+10+5 = 64. Since the assistant did not have
enough information at this point, one of these two triples must be the
correct answer; in particular, the secretary's age is 64/2 = 32.
If the professor is 49 years old or younger, her assertion about
being older than all others at dinner cannot be true; if she is 51
or older, that information would not help the assistant. Hence,
the professor is 50, and her dinner guests had ages 49, 10, 5.

I actually tried it yesterday but came up with inconclusive answers that all satisfy the given conditions. I also came up with those two factors and one more:
Guests are 25, 14 and 7 years old. 25x14x7 = 2450
25 + 14 + 7 = 46; secretary/assistant = 23 years old.
Professor is older so she must be 26 years old or older.

@anish - If u see my explaination i have already mentioned that two of them are twins, that is why i left out the combinations 10,2,1, 9 3,1 and so on since they do not contain twin's ages.

Kami but how on earth did you realise there should be a twins as you have tottally missed the point that the product of the numbers should be the number on the door.
@blackspot
You are right, you got one point
