Disable it and then uninstall your drivers and then re-enable it.

Yes, it's safe to replace hal.dll but I'm not altogether sure it'll work. Usually, this indicates that you need a full reinstall of windows

I've had a problem with XP recently. A conflict with a Windows Messenger Download caused it to crash on startup. I got it running again by choosing a selective startup and enabling Services individually.

But now I find a problem with Outlook Express 6. I can recieve emails ok but the content of the email doesn't display. Any ideas?

@carkitter

you could try uninstalling and reinstalling outlook express. You'll need your windows xp disk.

Go to control panel - add/remove programs and click on 'add/remove windows components'. Un-tick the entry for 'outlook express' and click ok. Then, restart the computer and rpepeat the process only this time, tick the box next to outlook express.

If that doesn't work, you could try a repair reinstall. I've described how to do this previously in this thread, I think it's one or two pages back from here.

@Lamont

Yeah, post it here mate and we'll have a look

a quick Q from me

I've got a spare official battery for my Vaio (BPS2 I think) and its been giving me upwards of 2 1/2 hours but sudeenly last weekend it won't take a charge. In fact the vaio system tray power utility just says its on A/C power which is the same as it says when there is no battery inserted.

Is there a way to revive this battery because I surprised it should suddenly go and the other battery works fine in the vaio

cheers everyone for the help with this. the problem is basically iv come back off holiday and the computer in general is running quite slow and freezes for a second or two quite often. Can you see any problems.

Also i doubled my ram from 512mb to 1024mb a while back and wondered whether i have to do anything apart from putting it in the ram slot, the computer detects it but i didnt notice in change really in how the computer was running.

thanks again

@masseur

The only trick I've had any success with is to place a 100ohm resistor accross the battery terminals to completely discharge the battery and then directly wire up an ordinary 12v battery charger to try and force current into the battery. Having said that, the battery died again soon afterwards and it's a bit of a dangerous procedure so I wouldn't really recommend it!

@Lamont

I can't see anything particularly unusual in that HJT log. Is the new stick of memory the same make and speed as your original stick? For example, if the new stick is PC2700 and the original one is PC3200, the whole system will clock down to the slower PC2700 memory bus rate. Also, very occasionally if you use sticks from different manufacturers it can have an adverse effect even though it shouldn't. Have you tried taking the new stick out to see if it makes any difference?

That's fine. It is slow memory by todays standards but it doesn't explain why it's suddenly started going slower than before. You don't normally notice a massive difference in going from 512mb to 1Gb because 512 is plenty for running XP and doing basic stuff. You notice better performance when you use heavy apps like video editing stuff and games.

I'd still take each of the sticks out one at a time to see if makes a difference. After that I'd be testing the hard drive since that can cause stuttering and slowing down.

You can also try disconnecting the CD and floppy drives because again, they can cause strange things to happen when they start failing.
