well here's my 4 year old bike, built it by myself. ParkPre Alumax frame, SRAM 9.0 shifter, mavic rims and tioga tyres, RockShox SID XC (crappy), Shimano XT components (yes, still on v brakes ) and lots of other stuff. broke my cassette once, don't ask me how haha! still serves me well tho, be it for weekend off-roading or just plain riding around town i.e. to the neighbourhood 7-11 for ciggies
perhaps my future upgrades would include those killer XTR '05 components (discs baby discs!!) and Fox Racing Shox Vanilla R 130. mmm... yummy!
ride safe!

if that makes you feel comfortable riding your bike, why not. otherwise, the correct saddle height is when your leg is almost totally stretched if you put your hill of the foot on the pedal at its lowest position (6 o'clock). the saddle should be at least 4 inches above the handlebar if you're going off-road or you could have it leveled with the handlebar if you're more into freeriding. you can also adjust the tilt of the saddle according to your needs. play around with the settings until you get it the way you want.
afterall, its all about what feels natural for you and what makes you feel comfortable when riding a bike. listen to your body, don't be afraid to experiment! and most importantly, HAVE FUN!!
@batesie, thanks!
@whizkidd,
don't be! mountain biking isn't always about bikes and gadgetry, it's also the participation that counts. so keep it real man!

@missuk
Maybe a wee bit more, your rear wheel also holds the cassette(rear cogs in place) |

@missuk, Have you a Halfords Bikehut near you? You'll be able to get a reasonable rear wheel there for about 40gbp. Wheels are what I class as consumable, as I wear through a pair of rims in about a year. Guess I'll move to disc brakes soon to solve the wear problems. So many shiny bits to buy, so little money!
