@SuperG:
Do u even know how supperifcial u r?
I, being opposite to u, done some research and here is what i found: there r only 6 (yes, SIX) operators that offer edge and another 50 (fifty) planning to do that in 2004 and 2005! Do u know how many gsm providers( operators) r worldwide?!! OVER 700 pal! Does this ring a bell in ur empty-bucket-head?
http://www.gsmworld.com/technology/edge/operators.shtml
Do u really believe all that crap that big providers feed u, that EDGE will be the leading technology blah, blah? No wonder they r successful up to the point where reallity beats their previsions.
Do i need to remind u that they also said that about WAP and MMS? And about the MMS: only 10% of the worldwide providers offer MMS as a standard but the $ income is still weak. They thought it woulb be smtng like the sms hype but it isn't.Maybe in 2 years.
So, please, before replying TO ME (what u write in the forum is ur problem) try being a informed for a change. I work in this domain, i know what i say and what i do and i hate supperficial ppl like u. FACTS are what matters pal, not white-papers.
PS: U can start here: http://www.gsmworld.com/index.shtml

btw:
slovenia isn't on that list so here's the status in slovenia:
mobitel- the main operator which has more than 70% of ppl released umts a few months ago and they are not planning to do edge
vodafone-simobil: just released edge but they are not going to do umts because it's too expensive
so i think it's obvious that edge isn't imortant in slovenia, but i don' know much about other countries the way i see it edge was built for those operators who don't want to spend millions of euros for a umts license..... |

Vodafone-Slovenia won't release UMTS?!?!!??!
But they're releasing it on every other country!
In Portugal we already have it. For data only with a 3G/GPRS PCMCIA card. For full usage it'll be released only in June

Near the summer (or at the end of the holidays) Vodafone will probably release some handsets for 3G, Siemens U15 and Nokia 6650!

yeah it's strange at a first look, but if you think about it......
i mean slovenia is a small country (2 million ppl) and considering that mobitel is our main operator with over 70% ppl and almost 100% coverage of slovenia, it wouldn't make any big profit......
so i guess that's the reason but hey i don't mind that, mobitel is an excellent operator so i don't care about that anyway....
though it probably sounds strange because you guys never heard of mobitel but in reality mobitel is a far better provider than vodafone.... |

Since I live in Sweden (part of Scandinavia) I can tell you, to my knowledge no operators support EDGE here at the moment and it does not seem to be any plans to introduce it in future either. Most of the operators are occupied releasing their UMTS networks right now, so EDGE seem to have low priority.
I think EDGE is primary for places and countries with no plans to introduce UMTS in a near future (like NA i guess).
