In order to update over bluetooth/irda, the phone would actually have to have spare memory to hold the new firmware temporarily during the upgrade. That's about 8-12 megs (don't remember exactly), so I wouldn't hold my breath...

Forget about it,
There is no way it is possible to update your phone trough bluetooth or IR. Because using this function you need software. and when you update your phone all software will be ereased.

As no one on here really knows how the software in SE phones is structured, I don't think anyone can be 100% sure about whether upgrades can be done via ir/bluetooth or not. Personally I can imagine that it is possible to upgrade via these methods if SE so desire; it just requires more work on their side.
The point raised about the phone needing the software to run ir/bluetooth doesn't really hold water, because the software is also needed to control the data flow to and from the wired data port as well. Besides, you can easily upgrade software that is in use by simply copying that part of the installation (i.e. not the whole update) to memory and then applying it next time the device is restarted - we saw this enough times with older versions of Windows when they used to ask us to reboot our PC's whenever we changed or installed something. |

Well my guess is, since they said in the press release that its an online upgrade, you will need a data cable/sync station. Considering what you have to do if you want to update T68i firmware yourself, the update software would have to log on to a server to put the phone into service mode. Yeah I think its possible to upgrade via ir or bt but not very likely.

That's pretty much what I meant to say in my message above. It would require more work on SE's side because they'd have to take account of wireless connections loosing their transmission, which could potentially be a fatal problem for the phone unless they buffered the update process correctly.
We'll just have to wait and see I guess. I'd love to be able to upgrade by Bluetooth but, as it's probably only going to be done a few times each year, I'm not going to complain if I have to dig out my data cable for it. |

Yeah, but is a hell of alot more nicer for us in the states that have no where to get a firmware upgrade done. Maybe its just way of helping us out. Since the U.S. is too spaced out to have service centers everywhere. I'll just be happy when I can get rid of R1D on my P800. Although it is pretty stable, I hardly ever have crashes. |
