I definately see things going the way of the clamshell. With an external LCD, you get the basic information. Really, its alot like the human brain, by making the cerebral cortex convoltued, you make more use of the available space, which is limited. So, by making clamshell phones, you get the keypad and the screen in a better layout. PLus, with the smartphone push, we will start to see more styli driven interfaces like UIQ, Palm, and Smartphone. In those cases, the rotating screen, like some LG and Samsung SGH-D700 will be preferable because one can rotate the screen for a traditional PDA feel. My 2 cents |

Those two phones are for the Japanese market and only the Japanese market. They don't work anywhere else in the world.

Yeah, it's too bad, and pretty weird, that the japanese are so far ahead. But I can't say the same when it comes to design though. Those phones were pretty ugly. But then again I don't fancy the design of any japanese designed phones (not that I know of anyway) and Sweden and Finland are the homes of many good designers (that are to my liking). |

It has much to do with that I think clam phones just looks bad. Perhaps it's something I will learn to appreciate but I hope the future is regular phones but with the whole front being a touch display, i.e. the smartphones becoming cheaper and most of all smaller. |

Yea, there are two paths which I think phones will take. They will either be candybar style (ex. T610) or clam-shell. But the thing is that the candybar ones will have a touch screen and be more PDA like while the clamshell ones will have the buttons, just because the design allows for this to happen more efficiently. So depending on whether you want a PDA style phone or just a phone you'll choose between those two, in general..... of course there will be candybar style phones as well that don't have a touch screen, but i think it'll be less and less |

Why would a clam phone be the successor of the T610 and why would they replace it so soon? I can buy the idea of a successor so soon it if a T610i or something would come but the Z600 hardly sounds like a sucessor in any way from what has been said here. Sounds more likely to be a new modle to fill out the range to me.

All signs point to this being the truth.
1. There was a post on Howardforums a couple of months ago (I cant find it!!! arghh!!!) from a guy saying he spoke to an rep about a clamshell version of the T610, with a TFT display.
2. Geribaldi saw the handset in a Vodafone presentation, telling the message board www.telefon-treff.de all about it before Sonyericsson emailed him to stop posting about it.
3. I have spoken with Eldar about a phone he calls Z200 on a couple of occasions, he is very cagey but says it does exist. Eldar knew about the T610 a few months before it was unveiled.
4. Finally, an interview with Sonyericsson Marketing director Peter Marsden here he says...

There are some interesting Sony Ericsson products in Japan, using the clamshell design. Are any of these designs coming to the GSM market?
PM:
We are going to increase our portfolio substantially, starting from May onwards. We're not looking to be a stick-shape manufacturer or a clam-shell manufacturer. You limit yourselves in terms of what you're doing then, so we will have both types of products.
I think there are definitely groups of people who like clam-shell phones. The advantages are you are able to have a very good sized keypad and a big display. We believe it's a strong part of the market, but it's not the total market.
We will have products that fit both camps and we will have a dual line-up consisting of both types of phone. That strategy will be fully implemented by the end of the year.

Note the words "Dual line up." I expect to release high and low-end clamshells (Z600/Z610 and Z200), to complement the T610 and T310 candybar handsets.
How can anyone still not believe after all this evidence? |

that seems reasonable, so they arent replacing the t610 but offering a clamshell, hmm... prefer 'candybar' myself
how many times has this happened and nothing has come of it, - its probably a good idea, but realistically, its not going to be avaiable in europe any time this year, its taken this long to get the t610!!
