They are probably saying that because, while they can't clawback you, the staff member that serves you may still lose some commission - so asking them "can i buy a phone on a £50 per month tariff to get it really cheap, then immediately change to a £10 per month tariff" isn't the best way to word it. Whenever i asked that question, it was more 'if i buy a phone on a £30tariff, if i then decide i'll be using it for more data calls than for voice, can i change tariffs immediately, or do i have to wait?'
Which shop is this, btw? I suggest you actually phone Orange C/S, and have them tell you the truth - that there's no clawback, unless you buy from an independant dealer. I changed within hours, just had my first bill and no problems there - i got charged 6days of my original tariff, then its HSD all the way without a murmor of complaint from them! |

@simion_levi
Whats the detail of the tariff you are on as I need more data than voice. |

The HSD tariff i'm on isn't really of interest to you if you actually want to use it - basically it's just the cheapest tariff available, has NOTHING inclusive, but DOES include orange care for free (i.e. comprehensive insurance) for the £10 per month inc. vat.

That's all the tariff info - cheap text messages BTW @7p each, but most people don't use it as i've said - it's more useful as a cheap holding tariff, to get a new, insured phone to use on another Orange/other network SIM. |

Hi,
I've ordered mine off a website so i have to stay on the high cost tarrif for 4 months but the p800 was practically free, i'm wondering if i can change down to that tarrif even if there is no mention of it on the website i'm buying from?
please let me know,
thanks,

| I think you will find something in their small print that if you do they will charge you the difference between the price you paid and the price you would have paid for the phone on a lower tarrif |

Yeh i think they charge £100 + VAT, well thats what it says, but i'm talking about after the 4 months.... although if they do only charge £100 then i might change down straight away as i'm going on £50/month. I'm just asking because when changing tarrif do you go through orange? in which case i will be able to go onto this HSD tarrif, or do i have to go with the online retailer? i'm asking this becuase this tarrif isn't written on the site, well i cant see it anyway.. |

Ok, i just rang up orange customer care or sales, one of their numbers anyway, the woman told me that if i bought a p800 from an orange store then they wouldn't let me change down for three months, i said i'm pretty sure you can but she said that the shop wouldn't get the commision and they tie you in to the 3 months. So what orange store did you get it from? i asked if it varied between stores but she said it was the same nationwide, i dont wanna go out and get this and then realise i cant change down. Did you confirm with the shop that you were going to change down? |

You can switch to any tariff, just call orange on 150 and press 6 to speak to a customer service rep. Say that you want to swap to the Data tarrif, and they'll put you through to the data team. (You can call them directly on 156.)
Any third party dealer is very likely to clawback the difference in comission that they get from Orange because you switched before your first four months are up.
When I got my P800, I spoke to a guy in my local orange shop. He stated that the orange shops don't clawback. "What you do with it, when you get out of the door is up to you". He said the cheapest way to get one would be to signup for a high tariff, and then switch down to a low tariff the following day (It'll kick in after the first month). The contract I signed hasn't got any small print stating that I cant swap within four month, and the orange shop magazine that the guy gave me also has no four month clause in it.
So, the next day, I called Orange and swapped down my tariff. No problems at all. I guess the real proof of the pudding will be whether I get a letter from them saying I shouldn't have switched down - but I seriously doubt that I will.

well, it may be. It could work out to:
199 + 55 + (11 x 10) = 364
or possibly worst case:
199 + (55 x 4) + (8 x 10) = 499
which is as much as I was expecting to pay from the eShop.
I've been assured that the orange shop won't clawback. Zoidy seems convinced that they will
I'm convinced most (if not all) other retailers will clawback the difference. I ordered my 7650 from OneStopPhoneShop, and they stress the importance of not switching tarrifs. They record the phone call, and ask you to state that you agree with their terms, one of which is that the handset price is dictated by the tarrif you choose, and you must not change the tariff for at least four months, otherwise you'll have to pay a penalty.
Sorry about the edit before, I though I'd better flesh out what I meant, but you replied before I finished posting !
