Just as I suspected, the camera isn't going to be good at all. 
We reviewed the K610 that has the fixed focus 2-megapixel camera. That was poor too.
Remember the difference between the S700 (1.3 CCD) and the subsequent models, like the V800/Z800? The W700 and K610 both have disappointing cameras, and it seems the W850 will too. Why didn't they use the S700 camera sensor? Was it that expensive/big?

So it really hasn't got auto focus...? 
Despite this horrible lack of a great camera ability, i think i will still will be getting this phone, i just love its other features and the design.
I can understand Sony Ericsson not allowing the Walkman series phone's to have the same camera's and camera abilities as the new Cyber-Shot series since the K series does not get the Walkman media player and its extra functions, but i think that even in non-Cyber-Shot phone's should at least get auto focus, with most 2mp phones or above nowadays have a kind of auto focus...
I'm still deciding between this and the K800.

On the New Mobil web site it says that the W850 has a camera flash... this true, or is it just referring to an LED light?

It also says that the video player can only play 3gp videos... is this just a mistake?

Again people using the "It's a walkman, it shouldn't compete with ...." Did the W800 and W810 NOT have Autofocus??? THey DID Hava it. So SE has MAIMED a phone's features if they have removed Autofocus. Poor move if indeed they have done so... |

^ ok... just says the same for the k800 as well, even though the flash on there really is a 'flash' and not an led light.

well.. the phone are indeed released to consumers.. just pray for the next big thing... might sound impossible, and that will be a "Auto Focus Firmware Upgrade"  cheers~ |

For a 3.2MP camera ... real Flash are needed to fit onto it.. just imagine SE upgraded Mega Pixel on a phone without upgrade the LED light, they would look like a fool .. but for W850i case, really was big dissapointment  |

Damn straight...
I'm just getting a bit sick of se at the moment going on with all these different 'lines' you could say...the walkman phones, and the cyber shot phones. Because it leaves you with a bad taste in your mouth what ever phone you get...
e.g
Buy the w850, u will feel let down that they have taken auto focus away from you , even though they could so easily leave it in.
Buy the k800, and you will feel hard doen by as you have no where near as much memory as the walkman phones, and you don't get a newer software for playing your tunes.
I wish se would pull them selves together and just get back to making good phones, for everyone, at the same time. Lets see all the best features in one phone. Is it that much to ask for? a 3.2cam, walkman phone with 1gb card, xenon flash and good quality video...
This is what nokia have realised and are starting to show in their n series phones...all round competitors.
The way se are trying to put us in groups, single us off, force us into buying what they want us to buy...by sacraficing parts of the phone...its just stupid...

personally i like the idea of having the walkman and cyber-shot phones, though i do very much think it was so stupid to leave autofocus out of the w850, i'll probably get it anyway but it would have been the sort of phone that i would have wanted to keep for a long time without caring too much for new technology, if it had a 3.2mp camera with a flash it would have been perfect, though if the w series had the same camera's as the k series there would be no point in the cyber-shot series, which i think was a nice idea to bring into the phone industry after the other clever idea of having walkman phones. still despite me agreeing that the w series or other phones that are non-k series should not have the same camera technology as the cyber-shot phones, taking autofocus away from the w850 was rediculous, since the w800 and other w series phone's have autofocus, so they're just downgrading what should be the next walkman successor...

@MR how long have you had this phone and the latest othes? It must be so hard to keep them under wraps and I guess that as you use them you must occasionally get people asking you what phone it is?

I think it is good to have a Walkman line of phones and a Cybershot line of phones, but what I think SE needs is a NEW line of phones that have EVERYTHING. Pretty much like what the P990 should be -- a flagship model. Nokia has all sorts of new products that have great specs; and they also manage to sell other lines like fashion and sports. So I think SE needs to offer a new group of phones with top specs as another option to the consumer. Then we would be able to choose our phone based on if we want music or camera or video or all of the above! It just seems to me that if they have the technology, why not offer it all in one place? |
