excerpt from wpcentral article
"Lumia Black
Nokia has been very consistent with taking camera tech for future phones and applying them to devices already on the market. Case in point, new algorithms has been developed for the Lumia 1020 that will come when Lumia Black ships. The algorithms center on the oversampling magic that Nokia uses when making images from the 41 megapixels on the Lumia 1020. You’ll see improvements in how your Lumia 1020 handles tone mapping and noise filtering. These algorithms have basically been built from the ground up and Juha tells us your Lumia 1020 will feel like a new device when you get Lumia Black. He was most proud of how they’ve improved the noise results in the Lumia 1020. Your pictures will look much more natural."

Nokia is simply confirming what many had already noticed (I included) and the fanatics here insist on denying, ie, images of 1020 at full resolution and in mode pureview, whether captured by day or night, even in the smallest ISO have excessive noise and overly saturated colors, culminating in a result much lower than expected !
But surely this is a good news... A great start, who knows with this update, 1020 presents the same excellence in image 808 shows for over 1 year and a half !
P.S: Personally, I doubt... But I'll wait for the update to give a final opinion ! |

Yes its an AMOLED screen, although im not sure that would come into play after such a short time even if the phone froze up

Great news!
Tells you that they know they have a problem with noise/grain.. otherwise why bother with a brand new algorithm ? Hopefully its closer to the one on the 808.
actually improving could just mean improving- something could be done better without necessarily mean it has problems |

The screen burn issue is when the phone locks up and cant be powered down leaving the phone frozen on one single screen until the battery dies which could be several hours leaving the image burnt onto the screen

No problem.......even at 138 handsets it works out at an average of 16.5 handsets returned (approx ) and 9% of that is just under 1.5 handsets with a screen burn issue. Thats less than 1% of the total sold. At those percentages it is a non issue, although a 12% return rate is not good if that is reflected nationally, which I doubt

The 9% is of total sales not returned handsets meaning more than 1 in 10 sold has had this issue

ah I see. That definitely isn't good !! but I say again that with that kind of return rate spread nationally or globally I would expect is to be like a rash all over the internet, yet a search for "Lumia 1020 screen burn issue" brings up no pertinent results. Although people are reporting handsets freezing but not "terminally"

Like i said i really hope this is an isolated incident and is maybe a result of a bad batch from Nokia which they have manged to sort out before it becomes wide spread.

Yes that maybe the problem but that would be really bad luck on the NE of the UK to get so many problem. Nevermind, it is what it is and warranty is always an option
