Sooner or later someone is going to top or match the iPhone OS (hasn't happened yet). When it happens, it'll be funny to see the tables turned.

iGO8 8.3.2.71348 and Garmin Mobile XT 5.0.20. However both have GPS lag around 50m.

Which GPS software for X1 is most accurate? Are any as accurate as the built-in GPS systems in a car?

TomTom 7 is awesome. Much more accurate than Wayfinder which comes with the device.

Edit:
And much faster, too.

I think your statement should be qualify to skin-deep "look and feel". If you talk about guts, iphone OS is just so crap.

Well I'm not an iPhone programmer so I can't comment on the inner workings of it's OS. I'm just talking about the overall experience of the iPhone OS and not just the shell either.

What tables? if something better than the iPhone comes out I'll point it out and buy one - this has nothing to do with brand loyalty for me.

Or me. I agree with Boinng, the iPhone is simply the best device out there and redefines what a mobile phone should do.

Having said that, I'm REALLY excited about the Idou which seems to combine the best of the iPhone 3G with next generation technology from and Symbian Foundation. The crucial issue will be the success of the Apps and whether Developers AND THEIR CLIENTS (the business world at large) get on board with this platform as they did with the iPhone. If not, Apple will move further ahead and that will be bad for the rest of the industry.

@Boinng
Sorry, but, my point was not directed at you. iPhone does enjoy a comfortable position that other manufacturers can't seem to get right--even with far superior hardware

@carkitter
The Idou, TouchPro2 and Diamond2 seem like really nice pieces of hardware. However, I am very concerned about the quality of their OS'es and their software too (especially the Idou). Until they get the software & OS to the level of iPhone, they will be yet another addition to the long list of failed iPhone challengers. I am not going to be suckered in by great hardware only to have a 2nd rate experience due to the software and support.

My most anticipated product is the new WinMo 6.5, then hopefully WM7. I'll consider new innovative hardware when it's software becomes just as innovative. What would excite me is an Idou with a keyboard and an iTunes equivalent service and software that matches the "prettiness" of the OS shell.

It will be interesting to see how Apple responds to the oncoming crop of new hardware. Will they update their iPhone hardware platform or will they stick to their guns since the larger mainstream really only cares about the ecosystem and support and not about hi-res screens and high-megapixel cameras?

When I finally got my X1 there were 6 Iphones in my office. Now there are 10 X1 s and only one is sticking to her i-phone but she is wavering. The I-Phone has won I agree but that is testament to their marketing not it's ability. The i-phone also wins on value the X1 with a decent set of software is a lot of money over the i-phone and it needs that software to compete. Having said that the i-phone needs a decent office suite badly.

Hmm...

"Getting the iPhone is like going after Paris Hilton. She's hot, but your average garden gnome has her beaten in the IQ department. Getting the X1 is like going after Marie Curie. She's a bit... well... rough, on the outside, but she's got it where it counts."
-Myself.

Edit:
Actually, I think Paris Hilton's pretty average, myself. It's just an example.
