Harare - Zimbabwe's largest mobile network operator Econet said on Friday it would launch third generation (3G) cellular services next year, becoming only the third country in Africa to offer the technology.

Econet said in a statement the service, which offers high-speed data transmission and allows callers to see real-time video images of each other, would initially target the capital Harare before extending to other major urban centres.

South Africa and Mauritius are the only African countries where 3G is available, but cell phone firm Vodacom, joint-owned by Vodafone and Telkom, is building a network in Tanzania and MTN is thinking about launching 3G in Nigeria.

"Econet has ordered equipment from Swedish telecoms equipment manufacturer Ericsson for an initial capacity of 50 000 lines for the service that will be targeted at the high-end market, comprising mostly business executives, professionals and senior government officials," said Econet.

These would be in addition to another 300 000 lines for normal cellular service the company plans to release from next month under a $20-million expansion program to increase network capacity to 800 000 from 500 000 by year end.

Analysts are divided on whether there is a business case for the high-speed data service in Africa.

Some note that very few customers in the world's poorest continent can afford it, while others say that in countries where fixed-line infrastructure is patchy, mobile Internet access is desperately needed.

In August, Econet Chief Executive Douglas Mboweni said Zimbabwe had been left behind in a booming mobile phone industry in Africa as a recession and foreign exchange crunch hampers the three operators' ability to expand their networks.

In Zimbabwe, crippled by an eight-year recession, customers wait months for mobile phone SIM cards to come on the market, and most are forced to buy them at nearly 10 times the official price on the thriving black market.

Econet, which enjoys about 57 percent of the local subscriber share, competes with privately owned Telecel Zimbabwe, which has 17 percent of the local market, and state-run Net One with 26 percent.

@ Teen

I think thats a good move to steal prepaid customers...
But Im really interested in how number portability will take effect.

@786KBR: I would like to see Econet pull this one off...not to sound like a pessimist but 3G in Zimbabwe is almost too good to be true. Econet won a GSM licence in New Zealand years ago and their network is still to take off.

Hello Brix Yeah is me Mario. You see I have over 50 accounts all over the net. Esato is not that important therefore I only save the username/password on the login page. If that gets deleted just too bad. On prodigits I am on my 4-th account or so. On esato it went well until a 'fellow' south african came checked my web page served from my s60 cell (all python) and went to my book marks logged onto esato and prodigits and changed the password. My mistake I guess. Is remarkable thou - over 30 buddies visited there, checked my book marks and left without trouble until a south african come with his cell and could not help himself but steal the 2 accounts. Little he knew - the server (my cell) records, times, places, ip addresses etc. of every visitor. I have a very good idea who the thief was - lets leave it there I hope you'll find a job soon. Did you chaps hear about the public prosecutor who got stabbed in her office by some idiot ?

Hey, it's great having the S60 artist formerly known as mario2002 in the thread again!

Mario, I'm off to that Smartphone Show again next month; if you found all the S60 application info, brochures and related stuff that I accumulated from last year's show worthwhile/ of value, I'll try collect as much I can again.
Let me know.

@mario: Good to have you back. Why won't you tell us who changed your password?
@TeenVader: The ppl who are expected to change networks when MNP eventually comes on stream are PAYG according to World Wide Worx which published their study last week.

Never would've taken you for a Budweiser man. Everyone over there is always going on about Stella Artois, down here it's too expensive...so I stick with my Amstel's and Heineken's.

LOL Kryptik; it may end up being an effective weed-killer.

@ da brixsta,
Yeah, I've never been one to follow the crowd, whether it be with clothing fashions, decor, cellphones, music, bikes, etc... yet my absolute fave beverage is (almost ironically) America's biggest and most popular beer.

Stella Artois, like Castle etc., does nothing for me.

@da krypsta: I don't think you'll find any takers for that beer...I mean, you should call in disaster management to clear up what could possibly be a toxic substance.

@jmash: Yeah, the M600i is available. This is the first time I've heard about it's availability on MTN( who are usually the last to get anything).

@786KBR: I take it you're referring to the W950...October seems a bit too early, I would hazard a guess and say it should be here by December and probably go for around R4500-5000...please don't crucify me, it's just a guestimate...besides I haven't heard anything about either Vodacom or MTN testing the phone.

My favourite beer definitely has to be Pilsner Urequell. That stuff put me back on beer after my Black Label days rather killed my tastebuds.

I must tell you all, i've been using a friend's old S700i recently, and today as i was running to meet Dominique, the SE fell out of my jacket, skidded a distance, and disappeared down a drain. I managed to fish her out and to my amazement, she's just dandy. This phone is a titanic legend.

So im still waiting for the K800i. End of September right??

I could go for the M600i,but the one and only thing that sets me off this one is the memory, very little memory and we all know memory sticks are xpensive.yet the w950 has 4GB of memory. Now that's massive.Otherwise the M600 & w950 are almost identical except for the memory.
