@carkitter - you've just listed a number of good reasons why using an iPhone with a slow computer and a slow home internet connection isn't much fun, and they're fair enough points, but I don't believe those are necessarily faults of either iTunes or the iPhone. I found the combination just about useable on my middle-of-the-road six year old PC with a standard UK broadband connection (varies between 2-4mbps). On our new Macbook everything flies and it's a really nice experience. Are Apple wrong to be coding for that nicer experience on decent hardware? I don't think so.
As for the credit card thing - firstly, I'm sure it's NOT a requirement to activate or use the phone, there are workarounds to that - and you can remove or de-register your credit card details at any time. Secondly, it just makes sense for a phone which is so app and media orientated - without easy access to the appstore and itunes, the iPhone just wouldn't work in the same way.
PS - on the whole jailbroken security issue - I agree with Mass that if you're aware of what you're doing, there's not necessarily a problem (although jailbroken phones are, by definition, less secure and more at risk from rogue apps etc). But I do think that these SSH worms are revealling an ugly truth about many jailbreakers, which is that they don't necessarily know what they're doing, or what risks they're taking, and many do just go along and install things like SSH without understanding the potential dangers. So maybe there needs to be a bit more education going on...

there are lots of unofficial "tricks" on the net for creating itunes accounts without a credit card but they're not neccessary as you can do it perfectly legally through itunes.
just go to the app store and find a free app (or indeed any other free download from any other part of the store) and click to download. you get prompted to log in order create an account, so just click create, enter the details of the account name and password you want, and your DOB, cick continue and then on the provide payment method page, just click NONE.
if you choose to create an account from the STORE menu in itunes, you don't get the NONE option on the payment method page.
strange!

its not just jailbreaking the phone that allows this issue. you need to ALSO install an SSH program that is specifically designed to allow remote access AND not change your default passwords.
now that you are aware of all this, you shouldn't be too worried about jailbreaking. I'm not.
Me neither, I changed my SSH password, so I'm not worried at all:) and I think that when you jailbreak your phone, and not install SSH, some of the worms can STILL enter:S I just read a rumor about it, not so sure tho:P

I don't understand WHY you hate iTunes?! Can you state some points you don't like about it?...
I know why I don't like it.
- Storing my Credit Card details online
I'm sure that somewhere in the fine print of my credit card agreement it says I shouldn't do this, but considering the bank that issued me the card has an iPhone app which I can't access without an App Store account, I guess I'm safe from that particular problem. But I still don't like it. I think it's an outrageous requirement to make just to access the full functionality of the phone. Sony Ericsson are not that audacious!
- Syncing is fundamentally flawed
The Apple principle that you can't update in pieces, you have to download the whole thing again has been applied to iPhone/iPod sync and that really sucks. If I have a new photo to sync, I don't want to have to resync all 700MB of photos but I have to. The same with apps and music. Waste of time. The sync everything philosophy really gets out of hand when iTunes starts telling you whether you are allowed access to your content or not. Often I never know what I'll have left after a sync is done. I get all sort of warnings telling me this has changed since last sync and that has changed - all of this I know already, it is the reason for the sync.
If MyPhoneExplorer had a version for the iPhone all my troubles would be over. It has the best UI and the most customisation of any sync I've tried.
@Masseur
That TomTom iPhone holder looks great but a tad expensive to buy on it's own.

While I cannot rebuttal against the first 3/4 points you've posted, some of these are not significant - but personal preference and worrisome, if not unfounded.
- Storing my Credit Card details online
- Dude, EVERY SINGLE TRANSACTION YOU MAKE (sorry not intended for online shouting but to specifically highlight this point) has a record of your credit card, and specific card number authorization code (which is on the back of the card)!! There HAS TO BE A PAPER trail so that ANY company can prove a transaction was legally made.
- I understand that the authorization number being stored along with the card number bothers you - but do you want to open out your wallet in 1 hand while holding your iphone in another and try between the two pull out your credit card, hold it and type that secure authorization number on the back into the iPhone while you're standing in public? Not very safe at all if not smart in some hoods. Apple is doing you a favor giving you a specific email address/id & password. One can argue if your iPhone is stolen then it's at risk, but that's why you call the C.C. company to cancel the card, not wait to get through to Apple. Also in iTunes this initial time to enter it must be authorized by Apple to MasterCard, American Express, or Visa (etc) that you are the valid holder and owner of the card along with your address information. Its within the app on your computer and you can turn off the save password when making a purchase so that you're prompted. No different than pulling out the credit card - this is by default on the iphone.
- Syncing is fundamentally flawed
- No its NOT.
- You have the option to sync specific Photo, Music tracks/playlists, movies, tv shows, podcasts, etc. When you connect your iPhone next time pay specific attention to the check boxes in iTunes. Set them to your needs. I agree that the backup takes a while but no Longer than Nokia PC Suite/Ovi Suite, SonyEricsson PC Suite, or RIM BBManager - trust me I know and have used ALL of them in the past and recently: All take longer to do a full system backup; regardless of the model. I too have a low-mid tier PC (Dell Optiplex GX520 2GB RAM).
- There is a specific setting in the Info/Summary section (scroll down) that allows you to uncheck notify me when 5% of changes have been made; this should minimize the prompts. Also are you an Administrator/Power User on your WinXP/Vista/Win7 PC? If you're a limited user this "may" be part of the issues with prompts - but I doubt that since you seem very competitent.
- 256MB for a full system OS is not that bad. I can name about 4 phones that come close to that: RIM BB Bold 9000 for Euro language sets with all providers is about 160MB, Nokia N97 - 190MB+/-, RIM Storm 200MB, Nokia E71 - 130MB, etc. Oh and not to mention ALL these firmwares need to be installed FIRST on the PC before their PC Suites/Manager apps can load the OS into the device. Don't forget with BB's that you must remove the vendor file if you're using another vendors OS to get specific bug fixes or features you're after. By the time you install said firmwares - you're half way done on the iPhone. Nokia & SE have moved to a Flash based GUI executable that is ALSO slow to load, it must connect and make a proxy authentication, you must select through the list of varied models (should it NOT know what phone you've already connected to your PC given the drivers in use that are specific to the phone model)??
Basically its one thing to comment on 1 side of the fence when you're not seeing the other. I completely agree the mandatory backup is annoying (BUT it's helped me once when I stupidly sync'd the iphone to my TiBook and duplicates of songs and contacts, calendars ... a huge mess occured. The backup on the PC fixed it all - no changes needed on the PC/Mac). I agree iTunes is a HUGE resource hog running 3 process even when not running, and another 2 when you connect the iPhone, all on top of the main app.
PS: Yes Apple users usually do make more money than the medium income family braket = status quo. I actually hate the status quo!!
Masseur great find on creating an account within a Credit Card. There is also a way to create an US account so you can download US region specific apps. Then copy them to your other account folder .

Actually I looked up the instructions [HERE] and noticed that it's the same procedure for creating an iTunes/AppStore account without the need for a credit card, lol. Oh yeah, also note to check if you can USE store purchased vouchers to redeem in the AppStore. You'll want to verify as some regions may not allow this: Here in Canada I'm screwed for this.
@carkitter, Sorry I came across strong in my post - not sure why fanboyism got into me there. Usually it doesn't. As an alternative see if you have a local cheque/check cashing centre in your 'hood that allows you to register a Pre-Paid credit card (that you can deposit funds into from your bank or real credit card) and use that Pre-Paid credit card in iTunes/AppStore. The benefits of Pre-Paid is if its drained out its works like a debit card and does NOT affect your credit rating. Cheers.

PS: you NEED to use a valid US address when asked during the steps of creating an account;
Step 10: Continue to fill out the required name and address fields.

. Also check out the Apple Store (some regions may not carry it yet) for this bedroom/bookshelf boombox for further reviews. Apple Online Store here in Canada has it for $399.99CAN/$279.99US (current exchange rates).

The iPhone is about to make its big debut at supermarkets across the United Kingdom.
The "UK equivalent of Wal-Mart" as it's known, popular British retailer Tesco has announced plans to begin offering the iPhone in some of its largest stores. The deal to sell iPhones through Tesco was born of a partnership between the supermarket chain and the original UK iPhone carrier, O2. Although Tesco hasn't confirmed when its shelves will be stocked with the iPhone, most expect the wildly popular handset to be available any day now.
The supermarket Juggernaut is said to still be crunching numbers and ironing out details with Apple.

So who is taking advantage of the US' after Thanksgiving Day sales for Apple Store Online?!
I'm considering these "Apple In-Ear Headphones with Remote and Mic"
http://store.apple.com/ca/product/MA850?mco=MTU3MjMwMzQ
I REALLY want the Monster Beats/Monster Beats Tour by Dre ... but so many reviews say that although the sound quality and BASS is very sweet, the built quality is downright SH*T. Should've known that a horrible rapper (excellent producer) from NWA husseling days Dre would've done this; with a sucker company like Monster.
I think I'll save up for January purchase of Ultimate Ears.

@ofiaich, re: your questoins about the iphone car kit.
I took it out for a spin today and have to say it works very well... as a GPS.
Its very loud too, much louder than my Garmin and I could hear it very clearly over my MR2 engine during acceleration!
while the app lets you call POI's hand free from within the app, if you want to call a contact you have to exit the app and dial as normal meaning that for the duration of the call, you're not getting directions. That was very unexpected.
Its also weird that the connection from the cradle to the phone is via bluetooth, even though the phone is plugged in to the cradle using the iphone connector at the bottom. My garmin simply downloads the phone book via bluetooth on conection and you do all the dialing etc from the Garmin without the need to touch the phone, and I fully expected this tomtom app to do the same.
in general the cradle works well but there are some seemingly illogical things about it and no, I don't think its worth the money

Thanks for your comments masseur!
Very helpful!!
I had read about the bluetooth way of connecting. Strange!
If I use my iPhone with TomTom or Co Pilot UK, I use a suction arm and holder that cost me £14
I do enjoy using my Garmin very much.
I think you might have saved me £99 minus the Quidco 8% !!
thanks again!
