Zidane blames Materazzi insults

Zinedine Zidane's agent says the France captain headbutted Marco Materazzi in Sunday's World Cup final because the Italian made a "very serious" comment.

He called Zidane "A son of a terrorist!!"
He should have hit him harder!! (If that was possible)

world cup winners ITALY!!!

i went berlin!!!! great amsophere then i went rome amazing!!!

zidane didnt deserve golden boot either Cannavaro did!!!
he was outsatnding and the like of thierry henry couldnt do anything and couldnt even go round him!!!

Materazzi spoke in Italian - a language understood by Zidane due to his time spent with Juventus F.C. and first told him: "Hold on, wait, that one's not for a ****** like you." As the players walked forward, Materazzi allegedly said: "We all know you are the son of a terrorist whore." Then, just before the headbutt, he was seen saying: "So just **** off." According to Brazilian TV Rede Globo, a lip-reader claimed that Materazzi twice called Zidane's sister a prostitute. They also think that he said all muslims like him are terrorist.

As a Spurs & England fan, my support was firmly behind Italy in the final(!), however it's blatantly obvious that Materazzi's a dirty little scumbag.

Yes, Zidane has previous but although all that is being said atm is just speculation, it's equally obvious that he must have said something disgusting to provoke that sort of reaction from a guy playing his last competitive match in the WC Final, especially as Zidane's certainly no fool (unlike a certain combustible Scouser!) so suggestions that it was racial or family-related are highly probable.

Clearly, you can't condone ZZ's reaction, and it's a terrible shame that the memory of one of the greatest footballers of all time will be forever tarnished in this way, but one thing that is almost certainly true......Materazzi deserved it!

As a football fan first (and a moral crusader a distant second) I would like to say thank you to Zinedine Zidane for his unparalleled contribution to the game over the last decade and that we will remember the many moments of genius above the final few of madness.

edit: oh yeah, and can we cut the crap about how this is another example of Muslim persecution. If anything, the pro-Zidane reaction has been remarkable considering how other players have been vilified for far less (Beckham, Effenberg, Escobar[!]). Let's leave religion out of this one, where it clearly doesn't belong!

could nt agree more since the man himself describes himself as a non practising muslim so i dont think religion plays a huge part in his life.
