I think Rhino's poin is that if smokers have no respect for themselves not the singular body God gave them, how can they thusly have respect for those around them.
Either that or I always have something to say. |

@Siosal: I think you've analysed it way too deeply.
Noticed these last couple of years that more and more young black women are smoking whereas there are fewer guys smoking...I'm no Nazi but I sincerely hope Manto and Trevor Manuel conspire to up the price of cigarettes beyond R30 a packet...they could spend the extra income on health.
Seriously though I think people who "harm" themselves like smokers and heavy drinkers(I only drink beer and ciders) should be taxed the heavily.

Everyone has a vice - whether it be caffeine, sleep, exercise, or food. And nicotine's not the worst crutch. I dont think that having a vice makes us disrespectful of others or of ourselves. I think it makes us human.
As a free thinker, you may want to investigate which causes more physical and emotional risk - nicotine or alcohol. You might be surprised by the answer. But i wont dare suggest that it indicates a lack of self respect:-)

Yes. Especially if u want the black market to drain money that could be put to better use if prices were reasonable.

@ psychonymphe, lol, something stronger....not for me...I smoked a few cigarettes when waitering, but I hated it...I usually smoke Rum and Maple, but decided to get expensive stuff for a change...It is so much smoother...sort of the difference between Johnny walker Red and Black...Okay, more like Red and Green, but yeah...Borkum Riff is some good quiet flavour...want to stop soon anyway.
I really can't tell you exactly why i smoke, but I have it down to the fact that I have an overstimulated mind, and I sit outside with the hubbly or these days, the pipe tobacco, just to think, play guitar, compose, watch video clips....My big addiction is more to the habit. I like the smoke...the calming effect it has. The physical addiction is easy to break, it is the mental addiction that is the hard thing to overcome
Anyway, I am frustrated...late friday frustration...
@ Brix, I want to do the video calling thing sometime to try it, but no-one has it enabled or just don't have a phone to do it...it sucks...

Not to rain on anyone's parade, but yes, I guess everyone has a vice (although I'm struggling to think of what mine is), but, and this is important, your vice could be removed from you forcefully by a doctor.
Which would leave you with nothing.
Think of it as prempting. I choose a vice that has nothing to do with poisons or ingestion. if a doctor says I can't go to gym anymore, or I can't watch TV anymore, so be it.
But I know I gave 100% on my part to make sure I wouldn't be in that situation. And I know if I can give myself 100%, I can give the same to others.
(Why do I feel like I'm campaigning?)
I love this thread. lol |

The only parade you're raining on is your own. There are twn basic psychological conditions, one of which EVERY human being has. The one is the "it's not my fault" syndrome, the second is the "it's all my fault" syndrome. Neither is healthy, and some people are able to find the perfect median.
I just cant accept that someone who claims to have no vice is not of the type who shuns all personal responsibility. Its not WHAT we do or if we smoke, its how mindful we are of our reasons for doing so.

Calm down there man.
You seem to be getting very tense in your posts. Please recall i was initially attempting to explain Rhino's position. Whether or not I was right remains to be seen.
Secondly the psycho babble you are attempting is getting nobody anywhere in terms of conclusions or motive. I don't "claim" to have no vices. I merely cannot think what mine are. The closest I get is possibly Special edition dvd's, which barely counts.
If you wish to wax psychology we could always go back to the need to suck on a mothers nipple. But the fact remains we live in an informed day and age where we know war is wrong, smoking and alcohol are poisonous and mortality rates are ridiculously high.
Yet we create an "I don't care attitude" in which we explain that what we do to ourselves is our own. Yet there are children who will never have the privalage of sunlight. Never knowing which breath will be their last. Wishing for the opportunities we have. And we abuse ours.
Yet it would be quite funny having to explain to an advanced alien race why the hell we are so freakin ignorant.
I don't care what anyone does either way. I learnt along time ago that people are stubborn and self serving. I accept you however you come.
Please, accept my apology if I have in any way offended anyone.

Hey, that makes two of us. Im not tense in the least, just have a subconsious innerchild nipple suckling need to be contrary. Probably because i had an awful childhood and am seeking a father figure.
Dont know what i'm saying; the moment cigarette prices spike again i'm quitting;)

LMAO.
Cool. i was saying to brix, I love a good debate. But things like this are kinda futile. It's like telling an aetheist to believe in God. Not gonna happen even if you walked on water.
It's a decision you have to make for yourself.
But thank you for the intelligent attempts at argument. So rare to find someone willing to dig a little deeper. |

Myself and my family have lost friends in the double digits due to smoking.
Having said that, the brits are ridiculous in that respect.
But once again, it comes down to the, "Until the day I see it for myself" argument.

I'm having fun with all the arguments
@786KBR: Are there any special setting to activate? I thought, it being a Vodafone Live handset, that everything would come prepackaged.

Well said, everybody! As a confirmed smoker i can concur that smokers do tend to be more friendly/sociable, but that's probably coz we're in need of a light
I know that it's f*cking up my health in the long run, so i choose to only smoke outdoors, i.e. my workshop, the garage or the laundry when i'm at home. Having said that, i have just over half a bag of very smooth Malawi left... I've had it for just over a year, and only when i'm really in the mood for a puff will i roll a 1-blader... Which leads me to the point that i don't judge anybody because of their personal proclivities (not that i'm insinuating that anybody here is doing that!). I enjoy my cigarettes, but not to the detriment of those around me, which means i won't smoke where there are non-smokers, be it in a public space or even my own outdoors entertainment area.
And as for the church thang, different strokes for different folks, although personally i'd say do it in church, boet, for the sake of family harmony. You need never set foot inside it again, if you like, but do it if it'll make your bride happy.
I'm not superstitious, merely mildly stitious. |

If you're going to die you're going to die. There's no point in getting anal about your every action... Even if you dont drink, who's to say a drunk driver wont flatten you tomorrow?
Anyway, they should be putting their taxes on meat and fastfoods - which are root causes of many more cancers than cigarettes are. But that'll take another 50 years and some red-faced, foul-tongued afrikaners before it's realised.
