My favourite book: It's probably Animal Farm. As you can see I love politics and the effect it has on human relations.
Movie: Recent favourites include Lord of War, Inside Man, Crash...there's a lot though.

Oh yeah, i forgot, the rest of my hobbies: i consider myself an alternative artist. What i mean with that is part of what i already said, music, film, but added to that is photography, a little writing( want to expand on that quite a bit) and odd stuff like that. And one of my weirder hobbies is smoking hubbly bubbly, and get this, building my own hubblies. Built a few already, and they smoke much nicer than bought hubblies. But anyway, this is a dying hobby.

@ brix, that was a great book. I was discussing that with a guy on saturday, despite quite the big language gap we discussed the scene where the drunk pig adds the 'in moderation' bit to to the no alcohol commandment. Got a picture to post concerning this sometime. Have you read 1984? That was harsh, but brilliant...
My stuff:
Movie: Shawshank redemption. Got few favourites, but this one stands tall.
Radio plays: loved hitchikers guide to the galaxy. Made a few years before i was born.
Books: weird selection. To kill a mocking bird, Redeeming Love, 1984, lord of the rings, the hobbit, the silmarillion, kringe in n bos(despite my dislike of my native tongue) narnia series.
Shows: Monty python flying circus and also the movies. Frasier, Seinfeld, black adder, smallville, 70s show, little britain(yes, i am into mindless comedy aswell!) My family, but the first few seasons.
Games: fallout. What a brilliant game. Reminds me a little of the end of terminator3 and mad max.

Lets add comedians to the mix: eddie izzard, seinfeld and bill cosby. Got a few others i enjoy,like jim gaffigan(spelling) and adam ferrara.

@francoislr: Didn't catch much Monty Python on tv but I certainly enjoyed The Life of Brian.
Do let the Freedom Front Plus hear that you don't like reading Afrikaans...they might just put out a fatwa, or whatever the Afrikaans version of it is, against you for "volk skending"

I can't believe I missed putting music in that list of hobbies of mine. Oh well, I have an incredibly wide selection of music, although mostly early nu-metal. (Not the latest emo-fueled metal with wussy interludes n' stuff, or tacky old school stuff either). However, I have to confess that I have a decent collection of soppy stuff for those romantic nights, as well as albums of nostalgic 80's collections, even some Jeremy Mansfield stuff, through to Cypress Hill..right through to more obscure artists like self-confessed reggae poet and 80's-south London activist, the great Linton Kwesi Johnson aka LKJ.

Movies?
Hmm, yeah Shawshank Redemption and Lord of War are also high up on the Wanqstalist, perhaps 16 Blocks, Star Wars up there too, Terminators, Predators, The Island, Waterworld, Pearl Harbour, The Punisher, Dumb and Dumber...etc. But as I've mentioned before, there's not one single movie that I can give the all-time best accolade to.
I also dig some of the conspiracy stuff like Michael Moore's Fahrenheit 9/11 and Bowling for Columbine.
To the other extreme, I also relish in ONE pathetically tongue-in-cheek, wacky and mindless sitcom we know as Married With Children. Al Bundy for prez! (LOL!) Can't help it, and the razor-sharp chirps are just the icing on the cake after dealing with a good day's worth of draining professional formalities.  |

@francois, i used the expression somewhat ironically. Maybe we need to source parts of ourselves internally but the moment it goes kabbalah madonna find urself, thats just cheap. Its like trying to find god, it will never totally happen.
Bipolar, ouch. That really is kak. An ex of mine with the disorder OD'd because i didnt reply to an sms. It really just illustrated to me how little we can comprehend of the personal trauma. Not that he was the only one traumatised. |

Forgot to mention, you making reference to the Pulitzer-winning 'To Kill A Mockingbird' by Harper Lee (have you seen the movie version with Gregory Peck? I remember that band called the Boo Radleys got their name from that mysterious character in the book as well) made me think back to Std.9/ Grade 11 English classes.
Kringe in n' Bos and Fiela se Kind takes me back to matric Afrikaans...a tad more enjoyable than the oft-depressing gedigte and other 'renowned 'works like NP van Wyk Louw's 'Raka', amongst others. |

You guys really had me on a memory trip tonight! I so vividly remember so many authors who are really old friends, so to single one out would be nigh impossible. The one book which i thoroughly enjoyed was Bad Voltage, by Jonathan Littell. He's one of those one-shot wonders who wrote a brilliant techno-phile novel and bugger-all else. Just when the story gets really good, it ends... I'll read anything and everything, from Dostoevsky to the "Warning: Contents Under Pressure, Do Not Incinerate" label on the can of air freshener...
As far as movies are concerned, there haven't been that many which have been truly memorable, although i particularly enjoyed watching Once Were Warriors. I've watched it a few times, never fails to touch me. A movie which left a lasting impression was Gandhi. Sir Richard Attenborough's portrayal was brilliant, to say the least. I first saw it when i was a lad in primary school, and i learnt a very very important lesson from it- when participating in a protest march which is likely to end in violence, never ever ever be in the front rows when the fit hits the shan

What would they call it if they pull the afrikaans version of a gihad on you? lol! As far as i am concerned i took everything good out of the afrikaans culture and i oppose the bad. I hate it for the racist way it brought me up. I value human life more than anything and anything that does not is from hitler:) lol!
Never saw to kill a mocking birds movie. Read the book when i was about 13. It touched me deeply. Think it is what made me turn out the way i did, a bit anti-afrikaner, but yeah. Same thing, american history x just pushed that in me. How can one think like that? Yet a lot of prejudice tenancies pop up here and there, all from upbringing in that culture. That is why its such a big thing for me. Teach your children the way they should go, but what if that way is wrong? And it was not my parents, it was other people around me and what their parents pumped into their minds. |

@ amawanqa, funny funny beavis and butthead:) with your taste in music i think you might like my music i am making-i like it!i should, shouldn't i? But i am making music i can listen to over and over, and i get tired of music easily, even all the stuff i made in the past, so in that sense i know it should have some sort of potential.
Which brings me to, what do you others listen to?
@ brix. Dont think python was ever on tv here. Gosh forbid, with our government back then...i downloaded bits, saw the movies, and then eventually went halves with a friend on a dvd best of boxed set a year ago. 500 bucks of funny quotes and stupid, yet brilliant humour...
Which brings me to a left out comedian- Rowan Atkinson. And i am not taking bean, i am taking his standup stuff, also his typical acting in between, but the guy is a genius! And compared to that stuff, i hate mr. Bean. My brother got me a dvd of that in belgium along with the 1981 tv series of hitchikers guide to the galaxy....

Funny enough, both python and hitchikers was before my birth in 83, and rowan atkinson's stuff was from 81 and 86 (filmed in 91 though)
I sometimes think i was born in the wrong era, but then again, at least i only had 11 years in pre-apartheid south africa. Would have hated growing up in south africa as it was. Would have been like germany in the 30s i dare say.

The 5th of September must've been one of our all-time biggest post-count days; I know we might not be too bothered with the 'numbers' game, but I thought it's still worth a mention.
@ Francois,
I also enjoy the heavier side of industrial music, but I am quite selective.
One of the absolute all-time best gigs I have been to has to be the phenomenal German industrial-metal band Rammstein...man, what an incredible show they put on...I was surprised that London's Astoria Theatre didn't catch alight with all the pyro stuff!
BTW, what ever happened to SA's 'Battery 9?'
On the subject of Rowan Atkinson, there are often re-runs of 'Not Quite The 9' O Clock News' on some of the Sky comedy channels here, as well as all the Blackadder incarnations, Thin Blue Line, etc.
I'm intrigued to see you mention Little Britain. It has been hugely popular here, perhaps because it mimics so much of life here...particularly the unsavoury council estate types ie. 'Vicky Pollard'! Not sure if you guys have heard the terminology, but these types are referred to here as 'chavs.' http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Chav
