Well the old adage rings true here: RTFM!
If you are new to WM then you should study it, learn it, THEN decide whether it's for you or not. It is not as intuitive as iPhone or other phones but is every bit as functional and quick once you have learned and optimized it. All of your problems seem to stem from lack of knowledge rather than flat out being WM fault. We can all agree WM needs work, but, it is a very competent phone OS. If your crashing all the time, then get rid of the garbage software you installed, stop doing tweaks, and just stick to the basics until you become more proficient with it.
I enjoy media on the X1 (both audio and video) media playerS, I don't use stylus with contacts nor is it required. Yes, there are certain segments of the OS that calls for the stylus, but that is few and far between (try using the OK button).
Alot of the WM bitching is over the top (as max says). Just take a few moments and learn what can be done, and not be done, and what shortcuts can be set up. It is not difficult riding a bike once you've learned how to balance.
I wish I could RTFM, but mine didn't come with one... You are obviously right about me not studying up on WM enough and doing enough research about this OS before hand. I definitely needed to play with it a little more at the Sony Style store the day I checked it out, but I can't help but feel like a lot of the stuff I've now encountered I wouldn't have learned about until after I had been forced to use it for a while or "learned to use it" with every day use like I have. Is there a place that I can rent a WM device for the week that I don't know about? I'm sure with time I'll learn to live with it, but that doesn't that mean that I'll like or love it. As it now stands I feel like I'm settling.
I don't believe I've ever needed to know EVERYTHING about anything, before making what i believed to be a informed purchase, with the obvious exception of WM (which has it own special purchasing rules apparently)... I did a fair amount of research like I do with any other major electronics purchase before buying it, and had modest expectations about this phone that it honestly hasn't lived up to AS IS. I haven't done many performance tweaks like I mentioned countless times before (unless hiding the keyboard with ACT or changing Opera to my default browser using Xperia Tweak counts) and have only installed all of the panels and several programs that everyone else seems to be using with no problems (ie: .NETCF 3.5, Advanced Configuration Tool, Advanced Task manager, WVGAFIX2, HTC Diamond keyboards, HTC enlarge Start menu, Flash Lite 3.1, and Batti).
I guess my real problem is that I only wanted a touch screen Multimedia Smart phone with a keyboard that I could install some software on (like Sling which doesn't work yet ) that worked. I'm not a OS tweaker and kind of like to leave things stock for fear of screwing things up. I now think this really is your problem with my complaints here, which is what WM is REALLY about at this moment and time, right? And this is my main complaint with WM, sure it can be good, but only after you tweak it to high hell. I somehow missed this aspect of the OS while researching it. It seems no one sent me that memo....

A little Windows for Desktop experience should go a long way. Windows Mobile is very similar.

The source of your "bugs" may very well lie in here somewhere...not WM.

You shouldn't have to download tweaks, but, there are enough parameters and options available in WM alone to get things the way you like it. The third party stuff is just icing on the cake. But, yes, you should spend a little time customizing WM to how YOU like it.

All fair stuff tbh, but I never said I had a bug on my phone, you keep insisting that there is one. Like I mentioned several times before it has locked up several times with nothing installed after a factory reset... It was up for a extended amount of up time (about a day and a half) while I was trying to navigate from one panel to another when the freezes always happened. Maybe the "bug" is with the panels? o_O Anyone else want to chime in with their X1 experiences so far? Any freezes or lock-ups like I'm experiencing? I'm surprised it's so quiet with so many content X1 users out there...I also don't own a PC btw, yuck (I'm an artist, not a programmer). I thought I could just get by with this thing as is, and as far as my MAC syncs go, all is kosher (thank god) with the exception of my itunes playlists not syncing correctly.

1. As I said earlier, I've never experienced any lock-ups or freeze even one.
2. and... I rarely use the stylus. My default panel is the sony ericsson panel. I can access calendar, contacts, time, sms/email, task list, appointment with one finger touch only.
3. with the sony ericsson panel, you can set shorcuts... and I set youtube, opera, palringo (for YM and MSN), contacts as the shortcuts. So all of these can be accessed with only one finger touch.
4. As you can see, I don't have to use the stylus.
5. I think your phone is faulty with all the lock-ups and freezes. I'm surprised to hear that you have to do soft reset everyday... |

But your rant was excellent, though All you said is very true. I think the slightly confusing thing is they throw in excellent hardware, give the device a premium feel (in this case) and then charge £500. I would expect a phone to do way more than that if it cost £500. It is overpriced, and intentionally so, since it isnt for the mass-market as such. The flaw is when people pay so much, get the phone and then they dont like it. Its really just a lack of common sense. If its so expensive, else if it is so important to you, then read reveiws and do your research and find out about it, otherwise you could just be throwing money away. Noone bought it without knowing it runs on WM. If you dont like WM, dont buy it. If youre not sure, its too expensive a gamble, so dont buy it- at least not straight away. If you like WM and youre one of the ones who actually knows what theyre doing, THEN by all means enjoy. But dont make the wrong decision and then blame it on someone else. |

I got my X1 allmost three weeks ago, and I, like MyP910, haven't had any freezes or lockups yet...
Being an UIQ user since the P800, WM felt a bit strange at first... It didn't feel as streamlined and intuitive as UIQ, but it grew an me... (infact, the UIQ to WM transition wasn't any different than going from my old "dumbphone" to the P800, pretty the same experience..)
All in all, I really like the X1 (though writing textmessages while driving is a real PITA!), and compared to my late p990i, it's really fast and reliable.... (although an old Lada is probably more reliable than the p990i) |

Max. That was an excellent rant. Enjoyed every word of it.

Well, shit. Did you read that? He said that anyone defending Windows Mobile is either delusional or full of crap and not worth listing to.
I guess he's got us there. He said that now. There's no changing it boys, we're delusional. If we say we're not, it doesn't matter because he said we are so if we say anything to the contrary, it doesn't count because we're delusional.
So I guess... we're screwed.
Wait! I know! I can get my sister to say that everything that guy says is complete and utter bullcrap! I can't say that because he's already said I'm delusional. But he never said that my sister is! So now he's full of utter crap! Which abolishes our delusion! So you know what else? Windows 3.1 is awesome and anyone who says otherwise is delusional. There! It's set in stone now! Or does this only work for Gizmondo reviewer morons? Look, I'm a reviewer, I've reviewed stuff before and this gay website pays me! That means my opinion is correct!

I bought it on eBay, so I'm stuck with it, receipt or no receipt. Whatever the case I won't inconvenience myself anymore by sending it back to the retailer in HK in exchange for another one that I'm sure will behave exactly the same way. I honestly don't think it's just my phone, I now honestly think it's both a combination of WM and SE's panel implementation. At this point it is what it is... I'm stuck with it, and I'll deal with it until something better comes along, which hopefully is soon. I just hope that someone out there benefits from our dialogue, whatever way they decide to go with their purchase. Whatever the case, I now DEFINITELY know that WM is not for me and never will be, it's as simple as that. To everyone else who is fine with what they got and happy with their purchase, more power to you!

@boris, please don't believe that crashing is a daily occurance of WM or X1. It simply isn't true, and if your phone is experiencing this don't let it colour your perception of X1 or WM. Perhaps it was put on ebay BECAUSE someone else got stuck with your lemon and passed it on to you. Those are the risks of buying on ebay.
You may be jumping to the conclusion that the crashing is due to it being WM because of the myth sprouted by many non-wm users about WM being crashworthy - but the fact is that ever since PPC2003 or so, and especially WM5, the windows mobile platforms have been quite stable. It's only those with no real world experience of WM who keep spreading this myth around (you get it a lot from s60 users with secret envy of touchscreens ....)
btw, have you done a firmware reset? this might help with your handset.
Regarding the contacts, you can actually do all that via the ok button and dpad, it's really only in third party applications you should need resort to stylus use. It's just a matter of getting to know the OS. You are gonna need to do this anytime you start using a new phone os. WM IS more complicated and takes more time to get to know it's idiosyncracies, however it's far more functional than you give it credit for.
If it's too complicated and you don't like it fair enough, but be careful you don't let your inexperience colour you perception of a device you may actualy end up liking a lot if you give it a chance to become familiar with it.

Just got my X1 guys.
Playing with it, installing apps, customizing, etc etc.
Extremely fast and no lags, no freezes, nothing.
I had to decide between the Touch HD (+100 USD) and X1 and it was not a hard decision for me
The HD is nice but too plastic + no keyboard...
