i si ti in warranty? take it back, the screen has gone bad, may be one of the connectors in the bottom not touching the contacts or something like that.

The fact that it did not show up on the screen dump is an indicator that this is due to a physical problem in the monitor.

I can only agree with whizkidd and govigov, I don't know what could have caused the problem but it's definately a fault with the screen itself and as such, it needs to go back to where you bought it from if you still can.

Hmmm....on second thoughts, if possible..just reseat the video card (if the computer has one) and put it back again and power on the system.

Thank for replies. Unfortunately the warranty ran out a month or so ago... Does anyone have an idea how much it would cost for a replacement screen approx (it's a Toshiba Satellite 17"), or as was mentioned could it be the connectors? With regard to removing the video card, unfortunately I don't know how to do this.

hehe, I might just try that... been a while since I had a weekend project, which then turns into next weekend's project etc. etc. until I throw it in the bin...
Anyway, thanks for the input, much appreciated.

Good luck with your project! If it turns out to not be the conector, a new screen (with fitting) could cost anywhere between £100 - £200. I can't be more specific because it depends on whether you use toshiba's authorised repair centre or an independant one. I certainly wouldn't pay much more than £200 though.
If it's the GPU (laptops generally don't have graphics cards as such), you're probably looking at having a whole new motherboard fitted. Not cheap!

Yeah that's what I was thinking, it often happens when MS Office 'goes wrong'. (sorry, but there's no technical way of describing it! )
It's almost certainly down to an app somewhere that hasn't installed properly, often it's down to one or more components not getting registered correctly which makes windows think that the app has not completed it's installation process. This can be caused by a number of things, from something as simple as a corrupt installer file to some quite nasty malware that takes over control of registry permissions on a per-user or global basis.
To be honest though, this is one of those problems where I'd have to be actually in front of the computer to try and sort it out. What I would suggest though is to create a new user with administrator privilages and see if the same thing happens.
And if it does mainly happen with MS Office (word, exel etc.) you can try uninstalling it, creating the new user as above and reinstalling office under the new user.

That's brilliant, thanks very much for all the input most helpful. I will give the dismantling a go... Hopefully it's just the connector

I can't remember what you did either, but I don't think it was a full reinstall.
Try IEFix first:
http://windowsxp.mvps.org/IEFIX.htm
If you can access some websites and not others it's often because the site's IP address is getting re-routed via the hosts file, IEFix resets the hosts file amongst other things.
Could also be a problem with your ISP's DNS servers in which case there's nothing you can do but wait for them to fix it.
