Marc, please. The E90 was never king of anything, it was an utter failure, and there's a big questionmark over whether they'll even be a replacement for it, at least in this current generation. Who bought it, apart from you and that guy at AAS?
The Communicator line may have had a long and profitable following amongst business types, but the E90 with its rubbish S60 UI did not. It may have served adequately as a "look at me" flagship for five minutes, but it didn't sell.
If their is a replacement for the E90 in the works, you can guarantee it will be doing things plenty differently - for starters it will be touchscreen whether you like it or not, and it will most probably be made down to a more justifiable price too. Think N97 with less widgets and perhaps a slightly improved keyboard, and you'll be starting to wonder if they'll even bother. E97 anyone?
We're in a global downturn, and Nokia are under pressure from greater competition than they've ever faced - they can't afford to churn out another blog-pleasing, Dogmann-friendly, unsellable fail like the E90. | |

I am getting a phone where the box reads Black Silver. The dealer says the black ones just read BLACK whereas this one "might" be silver. Once i open the open the box i wont be able to return it.
I have a Silver X1i.
There is a sticker on the side of my box that says "X1 Steel Silver".
Other than the picture of a silver X1 on the box there is no indication of what color Xperia is inside.

You really do continue to spout some truly unbelievable rubbish of course not forgetting that just coincidentally which ever OS and device you use is of course always best at the time. First it was UIQ then it was WM and now its Apple wow it must be great to be as on the pulse and insightful as you think you are.
Firstly the E90 was and is no more expensive than any other top end smart phone and was around £500 off contract at launch. It may be a failure for you but isn't and wasn't for lots of very happy users that are still happily using them now. Just because you don't like certain things about it doesn't mean no one else can and to deny the power and usability of it is well just absurd unless it's smarter then you are.
As for what Nokia will or will not do i doubt you know more than most and in fact you most probably less far less in fact. I suggest you just stay happy using your iPhone and worry less about Nokia because i seriously doubt they value your opinions and knowledge at all.

Eh? I haven't said a word about UIQ, WM, or Apple. I didn't mention the E90 until you declared it "king of smartphones", in this thread about the Xperia X1.
Thanks for the compliment though. I do seem to be fairly "on trend" at the moment. It's not intentional, but not too much of a bad thing either (I certainly dumped UIQ at the right time).

Doesn't mean anyone else did, either. The E90 did not sell particularly well, and received VERY mixed reviews with some significant complaints from the very business market it was targetting; these are facts, not my opinion.

Plenty of the target market did deny the "power and usability", since in many ways it was less powerful and less usable than the model it replaced. The Register didn't famously label it the "cargo cult communicator" for nothing.

You may well be right, but I wouldn't swear to it. Nokia have made mistakes, and they've moved far too slowly in the face of competition - they may well still be as arrogant and blinkered as you suggest, but they can't afford to stay like that for much longer.

The Dogmann and Boinng thread.Come on guys.If there was one thread I was looking forward to it was this one.I imagined people informing me about what the X1 was all about,good or bad,a couple of nice short and sweet reviews,what it can do and cant,a couple of cool screenshots for me to see it in action ect
unfortunitely its turned foul and gone a bit pear-shaped.Tell me about the X1 and not everything but.Im happy for Sony Ericsson and there release of the X1.I hope it sells BIG.Ive got a sweet spot for Nokia and SE.I love them both.I just wish there were more people like me.There is some amazing technology out there at the moment and each manufacturer need to get the credit they deserve.Its a real mixed bag out there and we are very fortunate for that.Some like touchscreen,some dont.Some like 4" screens,some say you need a rucksack to carry it in ect ect.Theres so much for us to choose from Apples Iphone,Google Android,Nokia,HTC,Sony Ericsson,Samsung,LG,Motorola.We are spoilt for choice.Find the manufacturer,OS,and spec combination that fits your needs

Hey, I have a Mac and use Handbrake. It is the best video ripping and converting software available on a Mac PERIOD. I initially made the mistake of ripping my first video at DVD like quality (the setting I used in Handbrake was the "Normal" setting which rips videos at a average bitrate of 1500, did two pass encoding, and maintained the film's aspect ratio) resulting in a 2GB video file, and then transferred it over to my phone. So I copied the Bond Trailer over to my computers desktop and looked at it's info. It's worked like a charm so far!
@Malkmus, yeah, the speaker on the X1 sounds TINY. It's no where near as loud as my N95 8GB's speakers were.  But, tbh I knew this before buying it, and also knew I was compromising on this feature of the phone when I got it. The N97 speakers (it has STEREO SPEAKERS btw) should be as loud as any other N series phone like you mentioned, which is a good thing if you ask me. I also feel like the the screen on the X1 is a little bit on the tiny side after using it for a few days (it's longer than my N95's screen, but thinner than it). While I know that the resolution on the N97 is less than that of the X1, the larger screen would definitely be better on the eyes for extended viewing sessions and general use (like a long commute). I also can't help but notice quite a bit of motion blur and video stuttering while watching videos on the X1 btw (it's even noticeable on the Bond trailer that comes pre-installed on it, a high quality LCD HDTV this is not). Has anyone else experienced this?
I also have to admit that this is my first WonMob phone, and more than likely my last. I knew what I was getting myself into, but didn't expect anything this bad. It's definitely not the most finger friendly phone out there (stylus use for navigating is so 2000)... It took me about 2 days to come to grips with the OS and learn it's ins and outs (which wasn't expected), in which time I seriously considered selling it and buying something else (this I didn't expect). I'm OK with it now, but definitely have my eyes on the N97, which I'm of the opinion should work better as a everyday phone for me. You have got to love those giant finger friendly widgets shown in the video!

Boris, thanks for the info. BTW I just bit the bullet and ordered the X1 through Expansys-Usa under their discounted ATT contract for $575. I figure if I hate the phone I can sell it to someone else and actually make a profit. To anyone else that has ordered from them, maybe you can clarify something. When I placed the order the advertised page said available within 5 days, but my order after purchasing says within 32 DAYS! I hope this is wrong or I will be canceling my order.
Oh,and Boris, I appreciate the negatives you brought up, but since I just purchased it is there anything positive you did like about specifically in contrast to the N95? It would be reassuring.

Sure, the web browsing experience on this thing is sweet! It's probably the best you can get (using Opera 9.5) on any mobile device (with copy and paste it beats Safari on the iphone IMO). It only took me about 5 minutes to figure out all of the navigation features (opening new tabs and navigating between them is a breeze and great btw), so browsing the web should be a breeze for you. It's just one itsy bitsy step below a actual computer and web browser experience, or if you like about as close to a actual desktop browser as you can get at the moment. This by the way, is the feature you're going to appreciate that extra wide WVGA screen the most on. I also really like the standard 3.5 headphone jack. The qwerty keypad on the phone, contrary to what other people say is pretty damn good. I have no problems typing on it with my sausage fingers. Though, sometimes the letters on the keys are hard to see with the illumination. When the illumination starts to dim while your typing, sometimes the light will dim just sooo that you can't tell the letters from the keys. I also really really REALLY like the optical mouse. It's a little finicky at first, but the sensitivity on it can be adjusted to you liking, so don't sweat that too much. The optical mouse takes a little bit of time to get used to, so give it some time after you get your phone to become accustomed to it. Now, once Sling gets their Slingplayer working on this phone, and I figure out how to put a emulator or two on here it should be perfect. Hope this helps!

@ malkmus, actually I have the X1i with Tmob service. I spent about 2 hours yesterday Googling until I found a site that explained how to configure a PocketPC to T-MobileWeb (the new name for what used to be Tzones) on the phone. At $5.99 a month for unlimited internet and IMAP4 support for my email, it's a hard deal to beat, even if it's JUST at Edge speeds. I almost went with AT&T (or The Devil as I fondly refer to them) like you, but decided against it considering how much I'd end up paying for the phone with a subsidy from Exspasys with a AT&T contract over the 2 years they require at the time of the phones purchase. It would have cost way more in the long run go that route rather than just keeping my existing contract on Tmob (with what I feel to be superior service in LA) and buying the phone outright unsubsidized, $2,000 total with the unsub phone over 2 years with my current Tmob service vs $2,800 for the phone sub with a 2 year with a AT&T contract with less minutes per month... I now pay $39.99 a month for 1,000 anywhere minutes with free nights and weekends, another $3.99 for 400 text messages, and $5.99 for T-MobileWeb a month which totals out to be about $54 a month give or take a dollar or two!

oh, and I forgot to mention I've yet to have a missed call, and the call quality is excellent over GSM and Edge as mentioned in many many reviews. I was at dinner with a friend who owns a iPhone 3G yesterday in Northridge, and had 3 bars and great reception where as he had no coverage! |

Yeah the keyboard is a little lacking on the X1, but I prefer it how it is rather than have SE make the phone really wide. Personally, I think the device should have been 7.5 to 12 millimetres wider, but we must remember that this phone was designed to have more mass appeal than WM phones are traditionally known for. Size is everything to some people, and perception doesn't help... My sister thinks my P1 is a brick which is LOLerskates because her V3x is actually 0.5cm taller and 0.2cm deeper, the P1 only being 1cm wider.
There's really only one thing I don't like about the keyboard and that is that there aren't enough symbols on it. I mean the A to G and Z to V keys have no blue Fn on them, and I think we can all agree that was a bit silly of  . Whether the other letter keys had symbols on them or they added a number row and put the symbols there doesn't matter to me, just that I have to open up the OSK just to get a dollar sign...
I can see how many people would have liked the keys to have more feedback or "travel", but personally I have no problem with it.
While we're I'm discussing faults of the X1, er... 512mb internal storage to play with, half of which is taken up by the OS? What the hell were thinking? I mean even if it had 8gb I still would have bought a memory card, but this would be a deal breaker for many consumers. |

I went through this too. Then I realized that I have to significantly lower the bitrate, so the X1 could handle it. Through trial and error, I managed to get it down to 384Kps and now plays videos fine at that rate. I used Sony Vegas 7.0 (original videos) and also Prism video convertor (for DVD's).
I loaded the Bond Trailer into Sony Vegas then realized that SE cheated when rendering that vid. It is only 480 x 260 in resolution at 24fps. "Jazz by the Beach" is reported as 640 x 384 at a frame rate of 100fps ! But it isn't really video, it's just animated jpegs. Both videos DO look good though.
I don't know if this underperformance is due to the unoptimized nature of the X1 or the normal order of things (I'm leaning toward the latter). But when said "DVD quality video", I was expecting 720x480 / 30fps (or at least VGA/30fps). I haven't had the oppurtunity to try rendering an h.264 video for the X1.
