you misunderstand.
Even if they did believe in prophets that we didn't know about, the final outcome would have to prove that they believe in the same God that we do.

It can be safe to assume that a religion that believes in multiple Gods is not one brought down by our God for example.

I know that there are prophets that we probably dont know about, thats why I made the point that there are a great number of religions brought down by God. To show that there are some that we dont know about.

Chapter 6 Verses 84-87 from The Holy Quran states:

We gave him Isaac and Jacob: all three guided: and before him, We guided Noah, and among his progeny, David, Solomon, Job, Joseph, Moses, and Aaron: thus do We reward those who do good.

And Zakariya and John, and Jesus and Elias, all in the ranks of the righteous.

And Isma'il and Elisha, and Jonas, and Lot: and to all We gave favour above the nations.

To them and to their fathers, and progeny and brethren: We chose them, and we guided them to a straight way.

Jesus (peace be on him) was the second-last prophet of God. He foretold the coming of the last Prophet Muhammad (peace be on him). While the mission of the earlier messengers was generally limited to their own communities, prophet Muhammad's message and mission is universal and timeless till the end of this world.

Belief in Islam means

Belief in One God
belief in all of God's messengers
belief in all the books sent down to prophets of God. These books include Torah and Gospel. Only the Holy Quran exists in its original form.
belief in the existence of angels.
belief in the Day of Judgement, Life after Death, Heaven and Hell.
belief in the Divine Decree or Predestination, its good and its bad.

Muslims are those who declare that there is no deity except Allah and that Muhammad (pbuh) is His messenger. They submit fully in obedience to Allah and mould their lives according to the teachings of the Holy Quran and prophet Muhammad (pbuh).

I didn't say that the eastern religions were started by prophets. I'm only saying it could be a possibility, but I couldn't actually say so because the Quran doesn't mention them. The only time when we'll find out is on judgment day. The total number of prophets are thought to be over 400,000 and the Quran of course doesn't mention that many.

Humans took up worshiping idols pretty quikly, so a relegion beginning correcly and then deviating from the true path is not unlikely. Look how long it took Bani-israil to start worshiping an idol of a calf after Musa left them, yes they repented when Musa returned, but it still proves if the people's faith isn't strong they easily turn away from the true path.

I'm not trying to prove any eastern religions were started by a prophet, I'm just saying it could have happened.

Chapter 2 Verses 208 and 209 from the Holy Quran states:

O ye who believe! Enter into Islam whole-heartedly, and follow not the footsteps of the evil one, for he is to you an avowed enemy.

If ye backslide after the clear Signs have come to you, then know that Allah is Exalted in Power, Wise.

then i guess we are talking about two different things.
Yes of course there were other religions.

But I'm talking about the fact that there are other religions acknowledged by our religion as being brought down by God.

@scot, actually he was referred to the religions brought down by God.
Those that share the same prophets, story, and show prayer to God.

There are other religions of course but they are not the same as the relation between Judism, Christianity, and Islam.

I was under the impression that John Lennon was meaning all religions, not just the Judeo-Christian faiths. Perhaps someone more familiar with the song can clear this up for us.

@mustafabay

Judaism is actually one of the world's oldest religions along with Hinduism.

Buddhism, Confucianism and Taoism all originated sometime between 2,500 - 2,600 years ago. Hinduism is arguably the world's oldest religion, being at least 3,000 years old and possibly as much as 7,000 years old.

Judaism is around 4,000 years old.

The religions of the East differ from Western religions in that they tend to avoid dogmatic creeds and moral codes, which largely govern the Abrahamic religions. The Eastern religions tend to offer more universal truths, which serve as guidelines for one's life, and which remain open to interpretation.

Chapter 23 Verses 112-118 from The Holy Quran Allah states:

He will say: "What number of years did ye stay on earth?"

They will say: "We stayed a day or part of a day: but ask those who keep account."

He will say: "Ye stayed not but a little,- if ye had only known!

"Did ye then think that We had created you in jest, and that ye would not be brought back to Us for account?"

Therefore exalted be Allah, the King, the Reality: there is no god but He, the Lord of the Throne of Honour!

If anyone invokes, besides Allah, Any other god, he has no authority therefor; and his reckoning will be only with his Lord! and verily the Unbelievers will fail to win through!

So say: "O my Lord! grant Thou forgiveness and mercy for Thou art the Best of those who show mercy!"

Chapter 41 verse 33 states:

Who is better in speech than one who calls men to Allah, works righteousness, and says, "I am of those who bow in Islam"?

@Cenfi. I think I do too. He sang about no religion and one country. Nothing to live or die for . . . Etc etc a brotherhood of man etc etc. Now that would be a sort of heaven in itself wouldn't it? I find it hard to reconcile myself with any of the religions, especially when I have been brought up seeing how problematic the acceptance of other religions has been to some people. N. Ireland is a good example. Paganism sounds almost the better option to me at the moment. . .

@goldenface

Preaching tolerance and acceptance is one thing, but religions are not needed for that, people are. I find peace in Taoism because it stresses acceptance and compassion and one's own responsibilities. This life is just as important as what comes after it.

Chapter 17 Verses 82 and 83 from the Holy Quran states:

We send down stage by stage in the Quran that which is a healing and a mercy to those who believe, to the unjust it causes nothing but loss after loss.

Yet when We bestow Our favours on man, he turns away and becomes remote on his side instead of coming to Us, and when evil seizes him he gives himself up to despair!
