I took my s700i out to day and messed around abit. I wanted to see exactly how close I could get to an object before the camera wouldn't focus. I did read about the focal range of this camera somewhere but have since forgotten it (doh !).
This is a crop of a crocus flower from about 15 inches away (no other editing). I was interested to see that everything was pretty much in focus except the orange stamens - and they are further away than the edges of the purple petals if that makes sense. Seems the camera doesn't like very bright objects (cloudy w/b, spot photometry on) and can't deal with them (see the pixellated orange bits ?) It did this with spot p. off too fwiw but not quite as badly.
Again it did the same with the bright sky and branches here (what sun there was was behind me, cloudy day so w/b on cloudy) - I spot p'ed the castle, so I guess you could say that spot p. works better when there is no really bright parts in the frame else it will not only overexpose but distort them too (to be expected really from this sort of camera afterall and the manual does state that very bright objects may appear distorted). Maybe something to keep in mind when doing portraits, and very probably worth adjusting the exposure compensation via the brightness settings if bright parts are still too bright and weirded out.
Finally, just a cute pic of a friendly pigeon who I caught trying to steal food from the feeding bag I had rather than wait for it.
I'm quite impressed with the camera. I have a Nikon Coolpix 5700, a digital zlr in other words, which I use for "serious" photography, and obviously the s700i doesn't come close to that, but with abit of tweaking of the settings it is really very impressive for a camera phone - but I would actually call it a "phone / camera" rather than the other way around. Just the job for when you either don't have or haven't brought a "proper" camera with you I lost count of the times I said "I wish I had my nikon on me !" last year but didn't because I didn't want to carry it and a load of add on lenses around.
I'm really enjoying all the shots posted here - it's nice to see what other people are doing all over the world with this cute and really quite outstanding piece of kit.

Guys can any of you explain this symptom,
notice that the straight line is not straight, is it because of the lense?
Not A great picture but i like the color it looks natural, the S700 really capture color very well.

@Jalensmummy. Great quality shots there Jalen. I'll remember what you told me about the spot photometry. The Pigeon one is nice and the b&w one quite impressive too. I will have to get out and about this weekend and take some more shots.

@goldenface
Thanks dude I really love this phone - I've been out again today and it has been sunny. Currently the phone is uploading lots of shots that I took this afternoon of woodland and stuff. Can't wait to see how they come out.
p.s. My name is actually Rachael, - Jalen is my youngest dog , therefore I am "jalen's mummy". Perhaps I better add my actual name to my sig (silly me for picking a weird username !) |
