Conclusion:
So in all, is the imaging quality of the Nokia Lumia 1020 as good as or even better as the Nokia 808 PureView? No, its not that good but it’s damn good.

Well.. that has been obvious from the very first samples Nokia posted, and once they published the information on the sensor.

The 1020 is better than anything else but the 808, simple as that.

Straight on the defensive again. Like I said its a very level headed piece in which he also states that he uses the 1020 as his daily phone instead of the 808. And you cannot blame him because it is very tiresome trying to use a phone that is, shall we say, like pulling teeth to get it to a usable state in todays mobile world. And I am not having a go at the 808 at all, like I have said previously ive had three of them and I miss Symbian and to a certain extent Nokia Belle but its time to move on i think.

I normally don't like to get involved in these threads but I find myself in the same position as I believe many are currently.... and that is wanting something new but not wanting to compromise image quality. On the other hand, I have like 57GB of Skydrive just calling my name and I can't really access it as I would like from my Nokia 808 so I just may jump in and make the switch. That having been said, I still want great pictures (obviously) but also realize that I NEVER print them so I decided to compare 5mp images today... I went to an AT&T store and snapped a couple of shots:

Starbucks Image-
1020

808

Storefront Image-
1020

808

When you zoom into these photos you can see the obvious difference in sharpness and grain... but what I didn't realize till I got home was the dpi which the images were captured... the 808 at 300 and the 1020 at 72... Is that because I didn't go in and change the image recording to "super fine"? and if so, how much difference you think that would make with these two images.... ?

Starbucks EXIF-

808 Resolution = 300dpi, Bit dept = 24, Apature = 2.4, Shutter = 1/345, ISO = 100
1020 Resolution = 72dpi, Bit dept = 24, Apature = 2.2, Shutter = 1/1285, ISO = 100

AT&T EXIF-

808 Resolution = 300dpi, Bit dept = 24, Apature = 2.4, Shutter = 1/383, ISO = 100
1020 Resolution = 72dpi, Bit dept = 24, Apature = 2.2, Shutter = 1/2532, ISO = 100

There is no such thing as superfine on the 1020 mate.. it shoots at 95% jpeg / 72dpi by default.

Even with the camera pro app? And if not, is this something you think they would eventually change via a future update? [addsig]

Possibly.. they have a lot to work on in terms of color reproduction, xenon performance, IQ.. so they might make some more drastic changes in terms of dpi as well.

We can't be sure tho..

If you do go for it, I think it will be fine.. it will just take a bit more work to get the images to where you like them compared to the 808. If you shoot in full res and then do some post processing + resize .. you might be able to get decent jpegs out of it.

But, before you do .. read this.. I really don't like the sound of that at all. I am afraid that its way too inconsistent.. : (

Thats simply unfortunate to put it nicely... I was hoping to leave the store with some samples that could help me justify switching (considering everything you read online you have to take with a grain of salt) but the images are just SO INFERIOR that I can no longer convince myself that it's the handler or reviewer not knowing what they are doing.... oh well.. back to hunt for a RED 808! I sincerely apologize to TeeGee for posting a link to ebay in the 1020 topic. It will never happen again.

A link to an 808PV on eBay? Seriously?
Why is it so hard, to stay on topic in this thread?

Live and let live, how hard can it be ?

That was not just 1:1 zoom level comparison, but straight through pixel peeping! For cameraphones! And for someone who admits not to print any photos!

I seriously mean no offence, but this is plain mad!

PS: Oh and that is definitely not the way to do pixel peeping btw!

But I do quite often crop photos after the fact for sending via email, mms or posting to foursquare... so that level of crop is not uncommon for how I like to use my 808

Zooming beyond 1:1 is not cropping. You are resampling the photo by enlarging the pixels themselves!

Cropping is simply cutting a part out of the photo. What you are doing is enlarge the photo beyond 1:1 and then crop it!

If you for some reason need to do this, it's ok. You can compare both phones like that. But this zooming is dependent on the software you are using. You are not comparing out of the phones results anymore..

Then, comparing at this level, if analyzed correctly will always yield the same results if compared at 1:1. Pixel peeping it not meant for this really. It is to examine the consistency of the sensor at pixel level where it would not be possible at 1:1! Which is irrelevant for cameraphones in general and to these comparisons in specific..

Examining the photos at such zoom one could still see the same patterns: Sharpened saturated photos vs softened neutral ones..
It comes down to the personal preferences. One doesn't pick out a winner or a better performer based on these factors.
Of course it would be hard then to examine detail and noise at such different JPEG processing, but overall both are on equal levels with the 1020 having the advantage of OIS and some beneficial camera features..

As to the DPI btw, 72 vs 300 as I forgot to mention it in my previous post, it is totally irrelevant. These numbers mean literally nothing!

I disagree.... his long rambling diatribe seems to only be an attempt to aggrandize his self serving opinions on what a knowledgeable "source" HE is and what a poor job I did "reviewing" the image output... no where in my post (which remains unedited) did I claim this to be any sort of official test, nor did I ever use the word "crop".... Also, thank you CAPTAIN OBVIOUS for pointing out that zooming is not cropping... DID I EVER SAY THAT - go back and read. Im VERY WELL aware of how to correctly compare images but lets face it... THIS IS A PHONE, not a hasselblad H series camera or even a DSLR / get over yourself. I was simply pointing out that IN MY OPINION, this phones camera is a JOKE when compared to the 808 for how I WOULD USE IT.... not YOU or the masses... JUST ME... so slow your roll. and by the way, DPI does not mean "literally nothing" it means dots per inch and is a very good piece of information for those that would ever be looking to make high quality prints from one of the images.
