So I take it there are hotspots all over the place in Lagos? Correct me if I'm wrong but which network in Naija is EDGE-enabled? Apparently the keyboard is not as difficult to use as it looks...after a couple of days you should get the hang of it. But yes AYA, you have just justified your decision to shell out for the E61 when you won't be using most of the headline features.

No; but there are at least 4 open networks around my office and a few other places I frequent. Which is good enough reason for me to snub the M600i.

1. None yet. The operative word being "yet". But inside sources have it that EDGE deployment is already on ground. That's not difficult to believe, looking at the general scenario around the world and in your own country. Plus I happen to work in the industry.

Maybe. But why should I learn to use something different when there is another device with a standard keyboard available? What would this from-outer-space keyboard add to how I work or play? The thrill of using a "unique" keyboard?
And why would I choose this different keyboard when the other device has extra features I need or will need at some point in time?

By now, its obvious that this last statement by you - and indeed your entire post - was made on grounds of presumption, not facts. Which basically makes it of no value.
The E61 has everything the M600i has, plus more. The E61 keyboard is easier to use. The E61 costs less. The E61 is more value for money.
You live in South Africa, but somehow know that I don't use Wi-fi thousands of miles here in Nigeria, and also know that having EDGE on my mobile phone is a useless cause because there is presently no active EDGE network.
That's like telling me 3 years ago that choosing a GPRS phone over a non-GPRS phone was trash. Of course it was trash until Glo launched GPRS and I got on the gravvy train while others went phone shopping.
Come on; you can do better than that Peace man

@AYA: Granted, you might be the exception...you work in environs with wi-fi, you're hoping that local networks deploy EDGE to justify your decision.
My post is not in defense of the M600, hell I own an N70. You're probably right, if you ask most people, they'll go for the E61 but for the average man (here I venture on assumption) the phone and it's fancy features would be as much use as a sports car on a potholed stretch of road.

You are right. I probably am. I do not know many people around the world (not just in Nigeria alone) who use a mobile the way I do. And I had already taken cognisance of this. When I said Ambyzown's post suggests that he understood my comments better. , I was referring to this:

Again; you are probably right. The average Nigerian (at least) will prefer to spend N70,000 on a dinky fashion phone with zero functionality beyond phone calls and SMS than on a work-horse like the E61.
And none of my posts were aimed at convincing anyone to buy the E61 either. I simply stated that needs, not mere sentiments for SE, may influence a final choice:

In my case, I had a need and no SE meets it at the moment. That remains a valid fact. The next fellow in all probability could not care. Which is his cup of tea anyway; not mine.

@Pxt: I presume ur phone came with a 512mb ms duo pro, I could take it off u when u get ur 1gb stick. only thing is where to get the genuine article.
@Abu: testing the MS is the 1st thing I'll do should I buy one from an untrusted source. |

@Aya: After reading your post, I went and compared the E61 with the M600,and I must say that there isn't much difference between the two devices. They both have the same features except for a few viz:
E61 has edge and WiFi, M600 has touchscreen
E61 has 75mb internal memory, M600 has 80mb
E61 has a normal qwerty keyboard, M600 is physically smaller
If the E61 had touchscreen, it would've been a killer.
But I wouldn't say that E61 beats the M600i hands down. I've tried to be impartial here. However if I had to buy a phone between the two right now, I'd chose the E61, because of Edge and WiFi. (It would be my 1st nokia after the 3330 and 8850. The series 60 just does not appeal to me. I like the picture gallery viewer of the N70, but thats about it.)

@coola: I DEY ABJ!!!! Came in yday evening. But this Mtel gprs keeps disconnecting in my area (zone 1) but was working fine in Nyanya. Is it working in your side? Is vmob (i mean celtel) gprs working in Abj? A friend of mine told me she has seen the gprs signal in lag but not in Abj.
@AYA: Hmmmm..... I'll go thru past posts to show ur Nokia leanings!!!!! Any how, apart from qwerty, what other need do you have? I always use T9 for everything so its never been too much of a problem. Personally i wouldnt go for a phone with EDGE or WIFI if tht function is the only thing that puts it apart from other phones AND the Edge or WIFI isnt readily available. If, like you, Ihad WIFI at home or at my office, I might think about getting a WIFI phone though. But really, AYA, with all the other options available right now, will you jump on the EDGE bandwagon? (especially with the charges we envision them coming out with it?) Abi you wan do small effizy big boy moves?
@easyd: dont discourage yourself!!!! If you are interested in anything, ask . None off us were born knowing it!! Anything that is interesting to me becomes a priority for me to investigate. It nt about being "gadgety".
@laykay: I dont thinkany of our comments have been cruel or demeaning!! We all respect comments and suggestions (and the occasional Yab!!!!) from each other. Like my man coola buying that dud of a phone!!! (hehehehehe) Coola knows he's still my guy!!!! (right?)
@pxth: this whole OBJ vs ATK is a smoke screen while transcorp (a company they both have interests in, from the rumour mill) buys the nation. Is it coincidental that as heat started rising about transcorp, this fiasco started? Place your bets, it all boils over in a few months without a single casualty!!!!

I'll be waiting. Just make sure you start from the very beginning of this thread. You'll also probably dig up my SE leanings as well
My friend, what you'll find if you do a holistic search is that I am an unbiased, objective mobile user.

Try using T9 to respond to official mails, to manage online accounts extensively, to edit webpages, or to type out Word and PowerPoint documents.

In principle all over the world, EDGE service and pricing is usually not distinguishable from those of regular GPRS, so maybe the cost won't be an issue.

@abubakar: Just to clear up something...the genral principle around the world is that all data is charged at the same rate across delivery platforms. If your network charges, for example, US$0.30 per megabyte, the price would be the same across GPRS,EDGE,UMTS and HSDPA. With the higher bandwidth/speed available it will only mean that you will spend more money than if you had a slower connection.

@brix: As always, as things are not regulated here, I doubt that will be the case. As expensive as our GPRS is, I bet the EGDE etc will be more expensive. Even if its only a form of access charge they might try to add on, they'll do something cos as always they wont bring in enough equipement to handle a thong of subscribers simultaneously, so they'll opt for milking the few that can afford it. Mark my words!!!
