Ericsson, Spirea Mature Bluetooth Solutions
Both Ericsson Microelectronics and Spirea of Sweden haveunveiled details about their latest Bluetooth offerings. Ericsson will be sampling its second-generation Bluetooth products, including a complete multi-chip module (MCM) solution, while Spirea has developed a new RF transceiver chip and corresponding power amplifier.
Approved MCM
Ericsson's new MCM is 70% smaller than the company's current MCM, and is intended to help designers avoid the performance compromises necessary with single-chip solutions, and to enable companies to get their Bluetooth products to market quickly. The solution is FCC and ETSI approved.
The building-block approach taken with this second-generation design is aimed at increasing flexibility. The new range includes what the company claims is the smallest complete Bluetooth MCM solution, comprising a new baseband controller with integral Flash memory to complement Ericsson radios, and a choice of new radio transceivers, including a long-range version. The new hardware is supported by firmware up to HCI level and a variety of Bluetooth software stacks for host and embedded applications.
"Ericsson's new MCM will enable fast development of Bluetooth products and will be qualified to Bluetooth specification 1.1," said Stefan Molin, manager, Markets & Accounts Bluetooth at Ericsson. It is a complete solution (excluding antenna) for cable replacement and point-to-multipoint applications with up to seven slaves.
While the digital circuits are manufactured in a standard CMOS process, the analog parts are manufactured in BiCMOS or RF-CMOS to allow cost and size reduction for both chips. Supplied in an LGA package, the new MCM does not require special PCBs with microvias.
The new baseband controller(see Fig), the PBM 990 90, with integral Flash memory is based on a scalable Ericsson 1.1 compliant core with an ARM7 TDMI processor and AMBA bus. It offers several I/Os and 64 Kbytes of on-chip RAM. The new device is supplied with 4, 8 or 16 Mbits of Flash and fits several Ericsson Bluetooth radio ICs.
Host controller interface (HCI) connectivity is provided through UARTs or a USB port. One UART supports HCI connectivity up to 921 Kbit/s, while a second can be used at up to 230 Kbit/s for production and debugging purposes.
The 64 Kbyte on-chip RAM enables target applications to be embedded within the controller. The PBM 990 90 controller can adapt to several input clock frequencies. "The internal system clock can be configured to the optimal frequency for the target application to achieve the best balance of power consumption and performance," said Molin.
Security has been addressed by support for high-level encryption through ciphering keys of up to 128 bits. The PBM 990 90 supports PARK, SNIFF and HOLD connectivity modes, plus system power management to extend the operating time in battery-powered applications.
BlueTraC, BlueAmp
Spirea has developed "the industry's lowest cost and most efficient semiconductors for Bluetooth-enabled devices," according to Anders Oldeback, vice president of Marketing & Sales for the company. These include its RF transceiver chip, BlueTraC, and corresponding power amplifier, BlueAmp.
BlueTraC requires no external passive components, consumes a maximum current of 28mA at 3.3V, and incorporates dynamic power management. The device complies with the Bluetooth radio specification, version 1.1, and supports the industry standard radio interfaces uni- and bi-directional BlueRF.
The BlueAmp power amplifier extends the range of Bluetooth radios from 10 to 100 meters. Designed using Spirea's proprietary CMOS design process, BlueAmp is aimed at applications in the 2.4-2.5GHz band. BlueAmp can operate with BlueTraC as well as other 2.4GHz radios, and features a four-level power control scheme to satisfy the Bluetooth class 1 specification.
