Never under-estimate a Government that is hell-bent on cutting you to size.... they may get the licence but when it comes to beaming it into Naija... the rules have changed.

The GSM analogy does not stick. Except, say, MTN has "rights" for all International calls AND ALL of us have to go thru them for any international call.... then they refuse to re-sell to others AND the prices remain high for ever.

The analogy sticks regarding the fact that your tiny FStv and the likes dont have the money to set themselves up, which was my point!!! The nigerian operator have the chance to bid for rights but they cant cope. The only reason NBC (and whoever else!!!) can even try to open their mouths and say that only local champs can broadcast is becos we dont broadcast anything worth anyone trying to get rights for!!!! Anyhow, who is to say Multichoice isnt a Nigerian company (it must have registered with NCC and has a few nigerian investors!!!). We can always go extreme and say NO DSTV BROADCASTS IN NAIJA...... but who will suffer? ALL YOU FOOTBALL FREAKS!!!! cos i bet even without DSTV bidding, I bet the companies we have on ground wont be able to afford the minimum bids and get enough advertiser to foot the bill. Remember, we have an almost non-existent commercial market!!!!!!

So... because we don't have the money then we have to put up with "rubbish"?
I say the ban is a step in the direction: affordable TV for all.
What is YOUR solution?

Someone just told me that Glo has announced a N2/min tariff for 12am to 4am in response to MTN's N5/min. Can anyone confirm?

I don't care about the cost. Just don't wake me up at this period unless it is a medical emergency

@coola... calling someone by 2 a.m and posting are two different things.
If you are not careful you will become an insomniac before the end of the promo. Remember rest is a weapon.
secondly, awoof dey run belle. Free messaging to any network at any time is better |

Well, my usual bedtime is around 2am daily (don't ask me when I wake up). Talking with someone between 12 and 12:30am is ok by me... as long as the person is a "night-browser" like me.
The attraction of talking to someone for 20 long minutes for 40 bucks...boy...

It's true guys, 10kobo per second from 12am to 5am till Sept 30th. These guys are actually trying to utilize their unused capacity somehow. I'll try the glo offer tonight, of course i'll have to select those i can call at that time of the day before people start swearing & cursing at me for disturbing their sleep. |

Is this offer for calls from Glo to Glo or is it to any network?

@Coola: Your informant is wrong. Its N4.50/min
@Abu: You greatly underestimate the Nigerian businessman. For your information, Dovemedia (Owners of TITV) have invested more money and infrastructure here than Multichoice Nigeria will ever hope to do. And I believe they can pay broadcast rights fees, IF they are allowed to.
This new law from the NBC will serve to curb the expoitative nature of MCN.
When you say DSTv has paid a lot for programming what does that mean?
CNN, BBC, Sky, Discovery, SABC, ESPN, Cartoon network, Bloomberg, and so many of the channels in their bouquet of programming are actually free to air, which DSTv rebrodcasts. Take the English premier league away from DSTv, and no body will pay a dime as subscription to them. That is why they have guarded it so jealously.
Ideally, there should be no advert content in pay TV, thats why you wont find adverts on MovieMagic, Hallmark etc, yet DSTv charges us for watching adverts, and you talk about cost of programming? Abu you just dont seem to get the racket going on in the Pay TV business. This law is the best thing that could happen to that industry. |
