Some time ago, was the question, why the /// handsets have, R,A,T,W - names.
Lately I found an 'official' text from the 125years DVD of Ericsson history:

The Ericsson Files
The products – Mobile telephony - Mobile names

What`s in a name?
Text: Marika Ehrenkrona

How do mobile phones get their names? Why
aren't they called Sandra or Pelle, for example?
- Our basic idea is that customers should have
a relationship to Ericsson, not to individual
product names, relates marketing manager
Mats Georgson, who is responsible for mobile
telephone names.
At one time mobile telephones were given first
names, such as Olivia, Curt, Jane and Sandra.
These were project names that subsequently
leaked out to the market. What the name happened
to be was often a coincidence. Perhaps
the name was taken from the calendar on the
day the project started.
Today product names are linked to Ericsson.
- Underlying the strategic decision not to give
products a personal name or a specific brand
was the realization that Ericsson was entering
a consumer market in which the company had
never been active, explains Ericsson branding
manager Johan W Fischerström.
- We were thus forced to choose a strategy
for product names in which the Ericsson name
was the important element. Telephones could
therefore not be given personal names.
- Ericsson should be perceived as a worldleading
company and successful products
should build the brand, emphasizes Mats
Georgson, adding that a naming convention
must function in a situation where new products
are constantly being launched.
- Products come and go at an ever-faster
rate. Each product has a short life cycle. It
is therefore essential that the consumer has
a relationship to Ericsson, not a product name,
says Mats Georgson.
- You should always be able to go to a dealer
and ask for 'the latest Ericsson' and be sure
that it has the latest features, continues
Georgson. Consumers should be sure that
there is always something for them, regardless
of the product name.
The intention is to build a long-term relationship
with customers and to emphasize continuity,
instead of creating a hit with a product
name that more or less lives its own life.
- That's why we don't want to confuse things
by giving products their own names, continues
Georgson.
- Calling a product Jane may sound nice and
very human. But if the name catches on,
consumers will not associate Jane with Ericsson.
Sales of the accessories that we offer
will be affected negatively, since consumers
miss the connection between Jane and Ericsson.
We lose at both ends. We have a good
product that is not associated with Ericsson
and a number of accessories that are not
associated with Jane, explains Mats Georgson.
If the name is not accepted by the market,
another name can arise instead.
- That's what happened with the Ericofon,
which was a deliberate product name that did
not catch on. Instead, the market christened
it "Cobra, notes Georgson, who emphasizes
that the requirements for continuity are even
greater now that third-generation technology
is being introduced.
A brand should represent security. Models and
technology change, but people should always
be able to trust Ericsson.
- Companies that rush to follow superficial
trends will never succeed in winning consumer
confidence, concludes Mats Georgson.

The Ericsson Files
The products – Mobile telephony - More on names

ART for ART's sake
Text: Marika Ehrenkrona

Look at a mobile phone from Ericsson. The
Ericsson name is shown clearly. It is quite
simply an Ericsson, but there is also a model
designation with a letter or two and several
numbers. The model designation is smaller
than the Ericsson logo. Previously there was
a system in which the G in GF stood for GSM.
Today a different principle is used. The model
designations begin with A, R or T, which have
different meanings.
A means a lot of phone for the money.
R means high functionality.
T emphasizes design and form.

The first major launch of a mobile phone
named after the ART-system was the T28.
The numbers, 28 for the T28 or 320 for the R320, are sequential numbers chosen to work
well together.
Naming a phone is a combination of art and
science. Number sequence must be found that
appeal to all, regardless of culture. Many
numbers can have a religious or political connotation,
meaning that they cannot be used
in some parts of the world. Determining what
letters and numbers can be used in naming
mobile phones is therefore painstaking work.
In addition, the name should be easy to say
and rhythmic in different languages.
- We have conducted extensive studies
of what numbers can be used, says Mats
Georgson, who is responsible for mobile
phone names within Ericsson.
The objective with names according to the
ART-system is that they should be easy to
handle, particularly for retailers.
- They should be able to quickly produce the
Ericsson phone from our product range that
the customer is looking for. In this case, the
model designations help them to identify the
right product and to understand what each
has to offer. There is a logic in the system
that is easy to understand.

T29, T28 or T39 are great phones with long battery life. The best has to be the T20, it comes with a 1400mAh battery! That's alot of standby time.

T39m with a long life battery has a standby time of around two weeks! It will also slip easily into a pocket.

Well, got my T68m today, sadly, same as with the T39m, it's a Sony Ericsson one so that's kind of put me down! I want the gold one now.
It's in pretty good condition though, scratches to screen and screen itself. nothing affected though. Has had 150,000+ joystick moves which means it's not as heavily used as some that I know of!
Didn't come with a box, but came with the original Ericsson style SE charger which I thought quite novel, but I have a box anyway thanks to Bart!
