Its kinda strange really. When I worked for Telecom - The whole "future plan" was to ditch landline (not completely) but have everyone run purely off mobiles - for internet and voice etc. Maybe it was a plan based on CDMA as it really cost them sweet FA to run compared to GSM and the DATA speeds were absolutely incredible, plus there would be no "Unbundling" option for the CDMA network and they could dominate the country - Just like they did with the Landline originally. I wonder if their decision to go GSM has put a spanner in the works and possibly stopped any progression to a truely wireless country? - Well, in a cost-effective sense anyways. I remember seeing the presentation containing a family and ther wireless world. After that I was thinking "Why the hell do we still have landlines now then?" But yea, I might have to talk to some Telecom buddies and find out about that again.
With Telecom set to acquire Woosh (I believe New Zealand's primary wireless ADSL provider) I think you'll find it's being taken care of
The problem in Chch at least was that customers were slow on the uptake, and wireless has several weaknesses such as high polling rates which makes for laggy connections for the likes of gaming so it's definitely not for everybody... |

Say what! Where'd you hear that? Link please...
Whoosh are pretty much the only ones pushing WiMax in NZ, if Telecom do take them over they just may be dumb enough to go the WiMax route instead of LTE which has widespread acceptance among the industry leaders such as SE, Nokia, Moto, Ericsson, Nokia-Siemens Networks, Vodafone and others. If Telecom adopt WiMax we'll be back to the old GSM v CDMA style technology mismatch BS which prevented full and proper competition in our market.

Wow I think you just found me a new desktop wallpaper!
BTW, I've been looking at alternatives to a W980.
My criteria is:
Must have
SE phone
3.2Mp camera
HSDPA
Good looking
Would like to have
Thin phone
Walkman or Cybershot features
Metal body
Wifi but BT PAN will do
Stereo speakers
Short list in order of preference:
W890 (Mocha Brown) - $499
T650 (Blue) - $379
W760 (Red) - $500ish
C702 (Cyan) - $500ish
G700 (Silk Bronze) - $478
What do you guys reckon?
Hmm... None of your options really cover your wants and needs very well. Why exactly do you want an alternative? The W980 will definitely come down in price!
And to be honest, with your list you made there, I don't think any of them are really special beyond what your V640i already is, apart from the T650i and C702. But then, the T650i is older and non-A200, etc.
I'd wait for the W980 or C905, but if you can't I'd take the C702.

The T650 is great but now that I've experienced HSDPA and A200 I'm worried I'll be disappointed by it. Doesn't the W890 have a Metal body? I see it as a sooped-up T650 but without A/F which I'd like but can do without. W760 is the least stylish and professional looking of the bunch but the good quality camera and stereo speakers bump it up to third. I would like to get a C905 next year so the C702 seems unnecessary and therefore ranks fourth. I had hoped the G700 included Wifi but apparently not. With the usual lack of features that UIQ phones have, it fails to excite in any area really especially colour and styling.
The C905 and imminent arrival of the iPhone put the W980 into perspective. Its a great looking phone and I'd buy it just for that, but it's spec means that I'll be hanging out for a C905 next year for sure. And that for me means it's only worth $500 - 700, definately not $1170. The price will come down for sure but I'm still going to look around.

Yeah I don't see whats so special about the W760i at all. The C702 does everything the W760i can do, plus it has a better camera and better form factor. I think the T650i and W890i only really have good looks to offer over your V640i so aren't worth the upgrade. Except of course the T650i camera, but that phone has other drawbacks. Oh yeah and the G700 is in my opinion a pretty crap smartphone. I'd be glad to pay extra for the features the G900 brings!
Yeah you've got your V640i and your V800is, I'd recommend waiting and seeing what the situation is like in a few months!

I was in the local Vodafone store today scoping out the iPhone situation and availability of the 3G router when I came across a Black K770i. Unlike all the other K770i's this one doesn't look hideous because the striped keypad is not so obvious. Add this to the mix and drop the G700 and the list looks like this ATM...
w980, or: 1) W890 Mocha, 2=)T650 Blue, K770 Black, 4)W760, 5)C702
If it wasn't for the C905, I'd have the C702 further up the list.
Comments, anyone?

Yeah the K770i in black looks so much better. I still wouldn't go for an A100 phone, having experienced A200.
I don't see anything wrong with the C702... The C905 is obviously going to be an extraordinarily expensive phone. Mega pixels are worth their weight in gold, lol.
So if I was in the same situation as you:
1) W980 - Good all round apart from the camera, which is not a huge upgrade to what you have. BUT any high price at all is in my opinion not justifiable.
2) C702 - This phone really interests me and would probably be my pick of the lot if I didn't know how much you liked the W980!
[...]
10) T650i - Only really has the styling and camera going for it. A100 will probably disappoint after your V640i.
11) K770i - Same as T650i, but just not quite as good in the styling department.
[...]
52) W760i - As you can tell, I'm not a huge fan of this phone. I don't like its looks one bit. It reminds me of a kiddies phone.

Yeah that's very cheap. Although, the V640i at the same price is probably a better deal, wouldn't you say?

Well im currently across the ditch in Aus, so im abit behind on all the latest info in NZ!
Although i did stop by at vodafone in Wellington before my flight and heard a guy asking about the availability of the 3G iphone and the guy replyed "July release".
How that is going to happen im not sure! Either way, im not interested in the iphone one bit personally. My N82 is superior Will be posting some photos of my holiday when i get back
Carkitter - Definitely wait for the W980! It will be worth the wait im sure, especially with your needs listed above. Theres no point in getting a phone that doesnt meet ur needs, as you will just sell it anyway!

Well if the W980 comes down to a reasonable price I'd love to have it, but if that doesn't happen by Sept I'll go for one of the alternatives instead.
Due to some recent changes, I doubt an C905 will be in my sights next year so that bumps the C702 up the list... probably looking like this ATM:
W980 or 1) W890 Mocha, 2) C702 Cyan, 3=) T650i Blue/K770i Black 5) W760 Red.
