Easy question for all those who have done a jailbreak..
If I do, and want to use my Voda contract sim, how easy is it to find the settings, and then input them?
I am thinking with SE phones, I can go to the website and send settings for most carriers to the SE phone.
Is this a fiddly process for the iPhone?
Thanks,
Ofiaich
Punch this in on your iphone and you'll be able to go online and send mms on vodafone
Cellular data
APN: internet
username: web

MMS
APN: wap.vodafone.co.uk

...and hopefully there will be settings for visual voicemail when the vodafone iphone is released (any word/rumour on that Superluminova? dates/rates?)
so settings haven't changed since I spent many years with vodafone then... I never had to use the username and password for internet APN, it worked with or without

@Masseur,
Nice work! And many thanks for the info. I'm still chicken sh*t to hack my iphone - which is VERY strange as I've done it to every SE phone and S60 phone I've ever owned. It's not like I'm very busy during the days.
Well, don't be scared, the thing is, at any moment, you can bring it back to the original, so just try it, and if it doesn't work, you can contact me, cuz I've had so many shitty problems, I can help you if you want immediate response:) Just don't worry, and trust me, jailbreaking is SOOO worth the trouble:D
P.S.
I've been using HandBrake for DVD files and iSquint for any other files to convert to iPod/iPhone. Don't know about windows

Many thanks. I'll give it a whirl this coming week as there are a few themes I'd love to try out. Yes I will be PM'ing you around Monday-wednesday.
Masseur, Visual Voicemail is to DIE for! I keep forgetting about this feature. You can delete voicemails and they stay on the phone; for which you can permanently delete. I have no idea how we all did without this feature for so many years.
PS: Contact Vodafone and speak to a level 2 or top tier tech support rep. Ask if they've upgraded their Glenayre voicemail system to the new ICE version - this is visual voicemail, if I'm not mistaken.

try downloading the software from the net, then do a SHIFT-RESTORE on iTunes and select it, it should work like that

If you wish, I can tell you which themes you should try, because I'm very picky about themes, and I have a few of them that I really loved:D

thanks very much masseur and Superluminova!
If the Voda sim that I want to use is the one from my BlackBerry Bold, should there be any issues to think of?
I.e. BB data services? I will search after breakfast !
Now need to get the courage to jailbreak!

You vodafone sim will work fine though I don't know that BB services are available on iphone, but you will be able to get normal 3g data
anyway, all I can say about jailbreaking and unlock is:-

Ok ... I almost got pulled into SE products again. Only for my daughter, thats it. I just love the iPhone TOO much.
Oh here is a review of the Bowers & Wilkins Zepplin Mini (B&W) that I posted in this thread previously.

Here is the Mini above the Zepplin:

Sorry but there's one extra thing to say about jailbreaking - just be careful and make sure you know what you are doing, because the first known iPhone worm is out and targetting unsecured jailbroken phones -

If you have jailbroken, make sure you've changed the default passwords and, preferably, shut down any SSH that may still be running on the phone. The current virus is only an annoyance, but the author has published full source code meaning that there will be more dangerous versions adapted by other people very soon. The "Ikee" virus only messes with your wallpaper, immediately letting you know its there, but the next one could silently steal your contacts, passwords, SMS, whatever the author wants.
Even if you've changed passwords etc, the growing amount of traffic "sniffing" out SSH connections on these phones is likely to start impacting battery life for jailbreakers (unless you permanently shut down SSH).

I did read about that the other day but as I don't use SSH I wasn't concerned, and even then the simple fix is, as you say, to change your passwords.
But I guess people who want to jailbreak and unlock and don't know too much about technical stuff probably won't have a problem with that issue as they won't know what SSH is about and will probably just bypass it if they see it.
but its a good warning for those that do

There seem to be quite a few users with jailbroken phones who got hit with this, didn't actually know what SSH was or whether/why it was running, and barely understood what the jailbreak was for anyway - http://forums.whirlpool.net.au/forum-replies.cfm?t=1315624
PS - this is different to the dutch guy who was scanning for open connections last week - this time it's a full blown worm spreading from device to device.

well I am surprised! and I'd say they are careless
just about all the instructions I have seen for SSh cilents tells you what password to use and for me that triggers an immediate response that it must be a default password if it can be written like that.
but perhaps there are people who do need to take care after all
mind you, I guess most intrusions only come when someone finds them, writes malicious code for them and people get caught. Before then, we're all mostly none the wiser.

dont understand why anyone that bothered to jailbreak doesnt take time to understand a few basic rules, like turning SSH off when not in use, apart from the security implications it drains the battery if you leave it on
on another note, UK users if you like your footie, download skyplayer and watch all sky1,2,3 matches right on your iphone!
the catch? well its £6 a month subscription but if you text SKY to 2020 you will a code for 3 months free subscription! |

Well I still haven't looked into Jailbreaking as of yet. Now this SSH ... WHY is it turned on by default in the first place, and also what passwords am I changing??? Not ALL the guides even state what advantages or disadvantages of jailbreaking give a user (vs normal use and using iDisk/MobileMe). How does it affect gmail via exchange settings by Google? also what other solutions are necessary to protect your phone?

The other option you have is to uninstall SSH, especially if you don't use it... it has no significance other then being able to access your iphone remotly...
Cheers
