Well, a friend of mine at SE Customer Service (NA) said according to the training schedule, they are supposed to get something that's simply called a "UMTS Smart Phone" by December. So, it's comfirmed 3G at least. And, I guess that points to a December release at the earliest. |

That might not be suitable to be called a phone / smartphone... IMO it should be called MultiOS gadget.

Obviously not multiple OSs installed in parallel (not yet, at least, but who knows? What with 4 GB cards coming along).
But there is no reason why smartphones, like PDAs, should not be able to support different platforms. HP is almost giving you a Familiar CD when you buy an iPaq; Psions series 5 and Netbook range had rather mature Linux distributions. Even the venerable NewtonOS is being ported to run on top of a Linux kernel on generic PDA hardware (Google for "Einstein", "Newton" and "messagepad").
Of course, the only OS that falls short here is Mobile Windows, which cannot be purchased separately, let alone installed by the user... |

I am just hoping the next P-series will have a hard disk... that would be a killer! Get rid of those damn expensive Memory Sticks and put a 80gb hdd in the next P-series!

I prefer the flash drive to keep it small and so you can remove and switch cards. Just seems to work better for me at least. And I would prefer Symbian for the reason of it being more phone oriented than Windows.
Does anyone think there will be any more information released on P950 before the October showing? I don't think I can wait that long...

My P910 just had a huge 1+ meter fall last week in brick.
It survived almost without a scratch (some parts flew away).
I'm VERY GLAD there is no hard-disk, otherwise I would have certainly lost my phone and all the data in it.

I kinda dislike a mobile phone with HDD in it. HDD is enough for desktop PC, at least for notebooks and Tablet PCs.

I've dropped my P910 a few times due to the stupid case it comes with it hasn't broken yet but it's very battle scarred |

Last month warranty left.. better drop more frequently and ask for new warranty lol

ehm, guys, haven't you ever dropped your hdd mp3 players, ipod, iriver, etc. They have hdd's. I have dropped my iRiver and know a lot of people who dropped their ipods and nothing heppens, everythig works ok, so why don't put hdd's on phones?

the p910 theoretically supports 4GB of memory stick duo, so the p950 or p1000 will too. |

I think people are referring to having the flash memory built into the phone as with the new Ipod Nano (4gb flash memory). As for hard disc....this would impact the battery life of the handset significantly due to the nature of HDD (high speed moveable parts for example)...Flash memory would be the sensible option and they could chuck in re-moveable storage too! So far as dropping HDD / Flash based memory I'd be careful not to drop either!...HDD will be more prone to damage though. |

HDD based devices consume more power than solid-state devices. They are also larger (I don't care how small you can make them, solid state will always be smaller) Yes, this includes the new iPod Nano... which is still bigger than the iPod Shuffle... get it?
Now, there are new HDD that are about the size of a postage stamp... those might work. But then HDD have 2 other problems... Shock resistance... and spin-up time.
Solid state memory is shock resistant by nature... no moving parts... duh. HDD have to have dampers and **shock** solid state buffers to keep from skipping (more power drain). Then there's the fact that HDD devices are slower. Solid state memory doesn't slow down when full. HDD memory slows down the fuller it gets. It's physics. How ever faster HDDs get... solid state will be faster. How ever power efficient HDDs get... solid state will still be better.
HDD have only 1 advantage... cost/GB. They fall short in every other aspect... size, weight, performance, power consumption & shock resistance.
And despite the supposed lower cost of HDD... that clunky new Nokia 4GB thing isn't exactly cheap. I can get an IBM/HP laptop, iPod Shuffle, and a SonyEricsson K750 for the price of that clunker. |

Everytime I saw someone asking for HDD for the next SE phone (ala NK N series), I really wanted to write something to highlight the cons of HDD in mobile devices, and now I really hope those who had ever wished to have a HDD drive based mobile phone, can have the opportunity to read your post here in esato
