Yeah I think I remember seeing some ads about that. Happy rich families with their expensive wireless tech.
I think it may have been delayed more by New Zealanders and their unwillingness to accept newer mobile technology. I believe the average NZ mobile phone user just doesn't give a crap about data speeds or wireless whatever. They just want a phone that can text, take poor quality snaps and call there mum for a lift when they're out late.
Kinda stink really. Especially since NZ is a big testing ground for new tech. I wonder if these 5 million extra chinese NZ is due to receive over the next 8 years will help with market and drive prices down. We will see I guess!

Well I'm sceptical of the 'Auckland bias' thing, I think you'll find they just run the numbers and find that Vodahug has more market penetration in certain areas and they've started there first.
@Jism
A clearer picture of VodafoneNZ is starting to emerge (well clearer to me anyway, not being on the inside...) alot of the Mobile technology we see overseas is able to generate a bigger financial return faster because of the high concentrations of people in small geographical areas, so Aucklnad comes closest to emulating that. Despite this VodafoneNZ have done fairly well in rolling out 3G and 3.5Gin a timely fashion and have plans already for 4G (LTE) in 2010/11. The plans I guess reflect supply and demand (upping the price restricts demand to manageable levels and minimises complaints) and will no doubt come down because of the iPhone 3G and increased GSM competition. Time will tell... November will be interesting indeed and my 24 month plan ends 5 March 2009 so early-renewal becomes an option from this Sept.
VodafoneNZ seems to take its cue from VodaUK - adopting the Vodafone Family plan is one instance - there was talk in 2006 of being able to bill mobiles at landline rates when at/close to home using the cell towers to triangulate your position, but nothing seems to have come of it yet although I see that technology has arrived in the UK already. At the end of the day, everything is governed by how Vodafone can generate revenue which is fair enough I suppose as they aren't a charity.
The government and the opposition have anounced plans to invest in Broadband infrastucture but mostly in fibre-optic not wireless, and even Vodafone have signalled that wireless alone is not enough to be a major player in the NZ telecommunications market with thier purchase of iHug, so I guess 'unplugged users' like myself will continue to be marginalised for the forseeable future. By the time that LTE's successor is rolled out, NZ could have 'Fibre to the home' in many urban areas and a second trans-Tasman internet cable which will speed things up significantly.
BTW, did you know that because of a lack of interconnect agreement, that all local internet traffic gets routed offshore and back again? If I can find it, I post a link to the article I read...

Anyone watching C4 tonight? Uchoose 40 topic is 'dripping with cheese'
They just played Kylie Minogues Locomotion and Micheal Jackson's You are not alone, but it was Bette Midler's Wind beneath my wings that prompted my wife to switch channels...

And very popular in Germany a few years ago apparently! They're obsessed with the fella. It is a terrible song though!
I wasn't watching though, I went over to a mates house to play SCRABBLE! Woo! I won easily of course.
Its been icy cold and pouring with rain all day, but my soccer wasn't canceled. I had to come off near the end cause everyone was worried I would get hypothermia! Also because I got elbowed in the face and my nose was bleeding... Now it feels like my nose is broken whenever I touch it. I think its just bruised though. I hope.
Then just as I came home from my mates at almost 1am, I stopped at a Supermarket because I was thirsty. As I left these guys started trying to block my car from leaving the carpark, but I was quicker and I got through and they attempted to follow me. Lucky my car is pretty quick. I don't know what they would've done if they had followed. Tossers.
What a Saturday eh?

Sounds a bit rough!
You might need a quiet Sunday at home to recover!
The weather has been attrocious up here too for about a week now.
But the good news is that I've enrolled in a Bachelor of Computing course which starts in about 4 weeks. Its Part-time at this stage 'cause I can't afford to stop work, but I'm quite excited about it. I'm hurriedly working on my 10 finger typing...
Hope your nose is okay

Nope, no recovery day for me! I have work tomorrow, and I gotta earn my money! I just hope its not like a few weeks ago when we still played while it was snowing. I was sick for quite some time after that, up til a few days ago!
A computing course will be cool! How long does the course go for? Half a year? I'll expect to see you debating along with Cycovision and all the other computer geeks after this one!

Half a year?
No, this is a serious one, a Degree in Computer Systems - Full time is 3yrs so Part time could take up to 6yrs but I'm way to impatient for that so I'll look to find a way into Full time study ASAP. It'll be quite some time before I can match wits with Cycovision and the PDA owners Club though I expect.
I've always wanted to study design, particularly car design, but when I mentioned that at secondary school to the careers advisor I got shot down in flames. Same with my parents. I though long and hard about taking it up recently but its too big a risk for me ATM, I'd have to go overseas just to get a foot in the door in any area of design and my sketching is not really up to scratch - the portfolio requirements are tough to meet having left school 18 yrs ago... so IT it is then. There is a major shortage of IT skills in NZ.
Its been hard to finally put aside the dream job I've always wanted, but who knows I might even end up writing mobile apps, that'd be cool! Anyway, I'll be the first in my family (of all generations I know of) to study a Degree and that I'm proud of.

Wow I could almost quote that word for word referring to myself! (not the IT or not so good at sketching part though, although I saw a few of your sketches and I'd say you're rather good! )
Car design has been my dream since I was very young. I even entered the Peugeot Concours de Design 3 years running a few years back hoping my coloured pencil sketches would make it through. They didn't, and looking at them now they were very amateurish. I really would have needed some 3D design software to get anywhere.
Not trying to be cocky but I know I have the talent to do it, but being from New Zealand really screws everything up. The only route is transport design at Massey in Auckland, where you have to focus on marine design until your final year (well this was the situation when I looked into it a few years ago). After Massey you then need to travel overseas to do a post graduate course somewhere in Germany or at the Royal College of Design or something like that in London.
Well this all put me off as I wasn't ready for such a huge commitment, and I have to admit my girlfriend being in Christchurch was one of the deciding factors... I ended up settling for graphic design at Canterbury University here, which is ok, but not what I really love to do.
In regards to IT, my uncle trained and worked in IT here in Christchurch for several years until recently when he took a very well-paid job in London. I think that's why there's a shortage here, you get paid so well overseas!

I live not far from Massey University's Albany Campus where the teach Transport *cough Marine cough* design and I can tell you they aren't one bit interested in Car Design. I also investigated that. The Royal College of Art in London (I think) costs GBP20,000 per year - even poms can't afford that - everyone needs sponsorship/scholarship to get anywhere near it, but it is the best.
Closer to home is Melbourne University across the ditch, if you're interested in the results of thier studies check out the Wheels Magazine Young Designer of the Year Awards - it is STUNNING for wannabe desigers like ypu and me, though I'm hardly in your league 'cause you're actually doing it and I have no doubt you'll get there.
People have said to me that no jobs exist in car design but thats not true. The world outside of NZ is very affluent and 'Design' is going through a revival as you're well aware from models like the Merc A-Class, Mini, VW new Beetle and any model AUDI, Lamborghini, BMW, Nissan, Holden or Ford.
Did you know Renault has 400 designers on staff and its susidiary Nissan has another 350? Honda has design departments in Europe, Japan and the US, Holden Design is the largest in Oz with Toyota and Ford way behind in size. Plus GM Europe and US divisions, BMW's controversial Bangle designs are selling exceptionally well, and I haven't even mentioned the booming US custom market, the motorsport arena, China's rapidly expanding motor industry or the Custom Motorcycle market ala Harley Davidson and Jesse James' West Coast Choppers etc, etc, etc.
While the cost of fuel will affect worldwide sales short term, big investment in R&D will find alternatives to all the problems and Designers are at the forefront of what is an exciting time of challenges in the industry.
I hope that an IT career will at least enable me to buy one of these exciting vehicles even if I can't help with its conception.

well chch sounds like a fun inviting place eh?i might go there for my holidays and wander the streets at night drunk just for some excitement.
well my 8gb m2 arrived so i gotta start filling that up with music.what a pain eh?
and in other wellington news, i found yesterday that ezishopping has opened a small shop in town (parallel import phones etc.) and they had G700 ($650) and G900 ($820) for sale (god i love this note feature on my G900!!!), as well as various other LG/Samsung/Nokia/other brand phones.why are so many of those high end nokis phones brick like?seems as shame to make them so chunky when they seem to pack so many features in them.

@carkitter: How good would it feel to drive around a city and see really great looking cars, then be able to say "I made that design. That person is driving my art". I think that would be one of the best feelings ever.
That Royal College of Art is ridiculously expensive! It sucks that we are so restricted here in New Zealand. We definitely have the talent to design great things, but we're too far away and too small.
@K71: Oh yeah Christchurch is a great place... A great place to get mugged! And its getting worse.
I bet you must be pretty happy with the price you got your G900 for then? |

T650 (Blue) - $379
W760 (Red) - $500ish
C702 (Cyan) - $500ish
